I know most of the rooms of most of the levels of this game. But this guy doesn't only know them, he's got instant reflexes formed for each and every part. I was amazed at how he might get teleported to a rooftop, from which he runs backwards KNOWING he'll fall onto a thin legde you need to be on (level Downtown). He knows the timing of the BFG gun so he shoots at doors before they open, and when they do the blast's effect kills monsters behind the doors. What puzzled me is how he found shortcuts between rooms I could only get between via long corridors. Stupendous how having taken the invincibility sphere the black & white screen doesn't in the least disorient him. Just an unbelievable ninja performance at Doom 2! Super well done!
I love Doom and Doom 2 but the way you have completely speedran the game on the hardest difficulty is just amazing. Obviously you have played the game to death to remember it all, but 100% kudoes. Amazing run Zero Master!
In 1985 the Soviets did one last experiment in creating a god-like human soldier. Now the survivor of these experiments is playing Doom 2 on Nightmare in his free time.
Watching half these levels, is like watching one of those chess games with high level a chess master where they do some crazy thing none of us would ever consider, like just completely disposing of a rook for no apparent reason, but which turns out to be an act that wins them the game like 8 moves later.
I grew up playing doom at a friend's house on his computer when I was just a kid. I was never really that entertained by the game. Even back then the pixel sprites looked super cheesy. Watching you play is awe inspiring. I never realized that it wasn't the game, it was how I was playing. Pure adrenaline. Thanks for sharing these kick ass videos Best I've seen. Shawn
The last part of the Living End was intense with all of that chaingun fire coming at you reducing you to almost single digit health. That must have been scary.
Mind-blowing to say the least! And it's nice to see the compet-n community is still active and people kept improving so much on Thomas' first nightmare run. You finished it in less than half the time - incredible! In the late 90s, I tried my hand on nightmare runs too, but I was nowhere near as good as this, of course. My best try was a 20nm3437.
That's still really good, certain tricks have made things easier in the last years :) I would imagine you had a lot tougher time at dead simple (map 07) with the respawning arachnotrons than I have with performing the rocket jump.
The rocket jump on map 07 while not easy to do will remove any need of luck from the map, I am not actually certain how often the normal way works so I don't know how much of a difference there is between them. The RJ does get a bit easier after a few 1000 times! The pain elemental of map 20 managed to kill me a few times as well. I don't want to waste any cells on a BFG if it doesn't save any time, but after he killed me twice I had to start using the BFG there. Even today I think the last room of map 12 is the most feared part, also I wasn't aware the torch glide on map 19 was discovered so early, was fun to watch :)
That's because it is. The composer for Doom and Doom II was notorious for basically blatantly copying big rock and metal artists at the time. Others include Pantera, Slayer, and Metallica.
I remember when the uv-speed category world record time was higher than this just a few years ago then zero master comes and gets a sub 20 in that category which was unthinkable at one point now a sub 23 is probably gonna be coming soon for nm. Zero you are the face of doom speed running great run and again congratulations
P.S. I know it's hard to tell for those who don't understand but your basic movement throughout the levels is unparalleled along with all the inputs for SRs it's amazing just how smooth and fast you play in all your runs meant to say that for a while
Oh and PS again, on map 13 I've noticed on your NM runs you do the wall run to the exit ,I also know the rocket jump is something commonly used in UV so is that a NM strat cause the hit scans and projectiles are too much in NM or is the wall run a better move altogether
+mustangcobra 108 Thanks for the comments, and true this run is faster than the UV-Speed record that stood for 4-5 years or so! On map 14 you mean, the wallrun is slower and so I wouldn't use it on UV difficulty. Usually I'll lose some health by the time I would be in position to do the rocket jump, and then the rocket jump itself would do too much damage, followed by having to run past a couple of chaingunners and shotgunners if you've survived that far. On UV there would be some time for them to react, on NM they will just instantly start to deal damage. Also just having some additonal armor for map 31 and 16 would give me a much smaller chance of dying on those maps.
I have never seen anybody do Barrels O' Fun that way before - where you don't trigger the starting Mancubus and then skip across the top ledges. Incredible.
Legit took me 5 attempts over 2 afternoons and a total combined time of 4-5 hours to complete Icon Of Sin. Zero Master does it in all of 2 minutes was it? Unreal. That’s levels.
That is totally awesome. My best result ever was dying in 10 cause I lost too much health in 9. And obviously, my routes are WAY slower because of not relying on rocket bump in 07 therefore, losing ~1 min on killing em all, taking SS in 02, not squeezing into cracks, etc. Basically a classic since Vintersfeldt route... But yours is a gem, period. BTW, is there a robust way to tell if a demo is glued together or not? Obviously, you have many mistakes and this kind of proves that it wasn't glued, but in the end, someone may leave a couple of mistakes just to make it look like done at once.
+Leo Firson I'm actually not sure myself, as far as I understand it competition doom should be more difficult to mess with compared to vanillia. I've only been running doom for 2 years and I don't really know much about programming myself either, so this question would be better asked at doomworld forums demo section, as there might be several who knows a lot about this stuff there. Incase you don't know, you record every input in doom so you get a demo (.lmp) file that you can playback. Competition doom has no tools to edit the demo, but you can always edit demos in prboom+ or xdre. If I should say edit the 1 frame where I fired too early on map 30 I am quite sure you could tell that it would no longer be a cndoom demo. I also save the demo for every run that makes it past map 05, of course a ton of failed demos doesn't prove anything, but every run like this should have a lot of them so it would show that the runner knows what they are doing. So say if someone out of nowhere were to beat my time it shouldn't be a problem for them to show that they could actually do most of the stuff well several times. Then of course we have just how trusted the person is by the community or just how well they know\play the game in other demos. And probably the last thing would be that it would just be really pathetic for anyone to cheat in something like this, but of course it has actually happened before. In this particular case I was actually streaming it, I also include NohBoard to show user inputs, so it would be as close to impossible as you can get to this being cheated, good question though :)
And this is why I'm too chicken to play this level and the Ultra Violence level lol. I'll personally stick to playing the I'm Too Young To Die level. Much less enemies.
I don't know if this is a thing or not, but I've never seen anyone use this trick I found in Doom the other day. (Mind you, this was Ultimate Doom, not Doom 2, so I'm unsure if it still holds true, because there were slight engine changes if I recall correctly.) I found that if you can flick your mouse just right while facing a group of enemies against a wall or door or otherwise blocking your path while shooting with the shotgun, you can actually get the bullets to register as coming from multiple locations, allowing you to cover more ground with your shots and clear crowds more quickly. It might save a few seconds at best on a future run of any of the Ultimate Doom chapters. Just thought this might be either handy info or an interesting new trick.
Random thought here but I've always thought The Spirit World has the coolest-looking design in the entire game. It's the most Hellish looking level in my opinion but strangely one of the shortest levels. You can finish it in minutes if you know where to go. I remember Bloodfalls being short and easy too. You'd assume the last bunch of levels would be all challenging.
could have been sub 23 if the end of "the crusher" was successfully done at first attempt :( but perfect run on "abandoned mines", great job as always!
I've tried that before, but my guy wasn't running fast enough to do what's been done here or on other speed-runs. I guess my doom character's just too fat or not fast enough. Even if there's speed added to this, it's still pretty impressive, but although you ran through & beat the game quickly.. you left hundreds to thousands of Demons everywhere! =O
Yeah I know, I had Doom for years, killed the Monsters & just sat there trying to do many of these things some of these people on youtube are doing & couldn't do it. Whatever though, I don't have the game anymore.
Question about Tenement: when you go down the elevator where the hell knight and all the spectres are isn't it is easier to just run off the elevator and walk on the spectres? That's what I do, but I assume you have a reason not to. Also on Tenement when you're waiting for the path coming up opposite the blue key, when you go across and pull the switch, isn't this a good chance to kill the revenant? Just curious. Awesome run and congrats!
+The Evil Toaster You can't walk un on top\under monsters in vanilla. For the revenant I don't think that is faster, as I have to wait for the second elevator anyways. I would be standing too far away from the revenant to kill him in time every time and the revenant rockets would be too unpredictable.
At 4:03 when you grab the yellow key, how come nothing happens? In my experience taking the key triggers this mass teleportation of monsters. I did notice you walked slower when you grabbed it instead of running to it. So that prevents the surprise party?
Some more questions. 1. 8:57 -- How? (I know it's Grab, I can pick up yellow key through the wall on MAP12 or SSG on MAP16, but I can't do it here) 2. 10:18 -- ??? 3. 17:15 -- ??? 4. 17:42 -- Teleporter didn't work. Why? 5. 18:31 -- ??? 6. 20:14 -- Did you use Strafe50?
1: it's a lot more difficult than map 12, so a precise setup is used. 2: difficult to explain, it's a wallrun I guess, but you need to get close enough to the wall to perform it which requires moving almost straight along the wall with vertical mouse movement, afterwards a specific angle+SR50 for it to work. 3: kind of a wallrun on the barrels below. 4: linedef skip, happens if you move to fast. 5: wallrun, needs a precise setup and SR50. 6: yes.
How do you sneak through the bar doors like you have done in several levels? example level 2.. I was like.. what the fuuuh? Great job though, wow... I'm impressed!!!!
+Kron Dizzel It's called gliding. Basically have to line your character up pixel-perfect with the lines of the door. Yeah ... it's hard to do, especially when you're getting attacked and under pressure haha
Amazing run! I don't know how you use Chocolate Doom though. I remember trying to use it after seeing one of your runs and it felt like the game was running at 20 fps.
It's a collision bug present in pretty much every ID-tech 1 engine games (Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and so on). Basically if you just run at gaps long enough the character just kind of slides through circumventing the need the open them the proper way.
When Doom guy is at 15% health or lower it looks like he ate a whole jar of strawberry jelly and he doesn't want his parents finding out.
hahaha
Luke Dodson hi
I like when he's smiling like that. Pause the video at 2:26. That's the "strawberry jelly eating grin".
19% or lower*
This guy could beat doom on nightmare while literally waiting for his pizza to arrive
+Sperg Ferguson Or in the time some people take to take a shit.
+Legatus Marcus There is shit harder than Doom on Nightmare though
+Sarblade I bet it's ur mom in my nightmares
if it takes you that long to shit, might be something wrong internally
Descent insane mode is also quite difficult
I know most of the rooms of most of the levels of this game. But this guy doesn't only know them, he's got instant reflexes formed for each and every part. Yeah, the "master" in his name is well deserved.
That was rather amusing! Sat down and watched the whole thing :D Well done!
+Omed Hani Thanks!
Zero Master
cheers :]
I wish he would do TNT EVILUTION on NIGHTMARE.
+gamaliel quinones he did
Do you ever worry after playing this well, that if demons ever did attack earth you'd be the one hired to fight them single-handedly?
Me playing a months-worth of Doom doing all my grind, doing my very best, and this dude beats it in half an hour.
You are trully the best.
I love Doom and Doom 2 but the way you have completely speedran the game on the hardest difficulty is just amazing. Obviously you have played the game to death to remember it all, but 100% kudoes. Amazing run Zero Master!

Best I've seen.
Shawn
The pixels look cool to me. Even more in one unit whole blood.
The last part of the Living End was intense with all of that chaingun fire coming at you reducing you to almost single digit health. That must have been scary.
If you thought chaingunners were bad in Doom II, Plutonia and Evilution are basically chaingunner bukkake.
I can watch this over and over again and still be impressed. You are a legend!
this guy can finish doom 2 faster than i can roll a joint and smoke it.. incredible
on nightmRe
Excellent work with great skills :p I was so impressed to see one of nightmarish games in my childhood beaten like hell lol
This isn't even a spoiler if I wanted to play Doom2 again; as he's so damn fast I'm not sure what's happening!
When I was 13, I beat Doom 2 on nightmare. I began when I was 11.
Good work. My 2008 self congratulates you.
I beat it when I was 13 months and I started at 11 months. Try to catch up.
2:26 - dat face gave my nightmares :X
What the hell is that?!
Mind-blowing to say the least! And it's nice to see the compet-n community is still active and people kept improving so much on Thomas' first nightmare run. this may sound stupid but what does 20nm3437 mean
The sound effects are super-futuristic. Well done for the times.
Just wow! Well done, sir! That rocket jump on Map29 was particularly badass :D
That trick to reach the exit of the chasm was cool; first time i see that done.
Жирный лайк тебе за такое прохождение!!!!))))
Really Good Job!!))
Amazing work! And thanks for uploading the speedrun in 60 fps. Nice to watch on a Saturday morning :)

The music playing for the level at 17:00 sounds a lot like the intro to the Alice in Chains song "Them Bones" :D
That's because it is. The composer for Doom and Doom II was notorious for basically blatantly copying big rock and metal artists at the time. Others include Pantera, Slayer, and Metallica.
@@smward87 he didn't copy it he was inspired by it. Black Sabbath is one of the bands as well.
This is really impressive.
Great work man.
I remember playing this game when I was 4 years old. Good memories
Dude, u give me an headache....What kind of Vudu Black Magic is this? AWESOME
the moves are so smooths i feel blessed by watching this.
This is the best nightmare speedrun that I've ever seen before. You miss map 32, but your way to play is like a god! =O

OK I understand now, thanks for responding, good luck down the road man
Damn dude, I know I'm a little late to the party here but you've got a gift! lmao I remember this game giving me such trouble way back in the day! lol
astonishing.
I started the video, sneezed twice and you were already on level 2
This is honestly pretty insane. Great speedrun.
2:25 Well I always wanted him to show that face even while at 100% health!
Me too! Since I was little it was really cool for me when he was covered in blood like that. Too bad I would die too easly when I had that low health.
I have never seen anybody do Barrels O' Fun that way before - where you don't trigger the starting Mancubus and then skip across the top ledges. Incredible.
Fantastic! You are a greatest Doom two player in the world.
Legit took me 5 attempts over 2 afternoons and a total combined time of 4-5 hours to complete Icon Of Sin.
Zero Master does it in all of 2 minutes was it? Unreal. That’s levels.
I have no words at all, this skill is amazing!!!
You dude are godlike. Hats down.
This was very amusing for me, great video :)
probably one of the finest examples of how to use BFG properly.
Increíble. Nunca pensé ver esto
those close calls had me on the edge of my seat. fantastic run and great entertainment, good job
Just watched this, and it went so fast I didn't really understand anything that happened :) But really impressive(even though you make it look easy)!
Interviewer: What is your biggest goal in your life?
Me: Finish Doom on Nightmare under 30 minutes.
Wow, you are goin really fast this one
Simply amazing!
Obviously, you have many mistakes and this kind of proves that it wasn't glued, but in the end, someone may leave a couple of mistakes just to make it look like done at once.

that moment at 19:20 when you shoot the bfg and run by them when they're dead and haven't fallen yet.
Impressive. Most impressive.
Why is this game so bloody terrifying even after 25 years? The new horror games arent even scary. This is just the stuff of nightmares.
And this is why I'm too chicken to play this level and the Ultra Violence level lol. I'll personally stick to playing the I'm Too Young To Die level. Much less enemies.
Amazing dude, well done!
To win the game you must kill me, John Romero.
I don't know if this is a thing or not, but I've never seen anyone use this trick I found in Doom the other day. It's the most Hellish looking level in my opinion but strangely one of the shortest levels. You can finish it in minutes if you know where to go. I remember Bloodfalls being short and easy too. You'd assume the last bunch of levels would be all challenging.
That's the first speedrun I see with no glitching or cheating. You did it pure and simple. Great job.
He glitches all the time. No cheating though. Glitches are the fault of those who made the game.
I played Doom 2 on nightmare! before, and oh boy, it's twice as difficult as nightmare! on Doom 1.
could have been sub 23 if the end of "the crusher" was successfully done at first attempt :( but perfect run on "abandoned mines", great job as always!

Yeah I know, I had Doom for years, killed the Monsters & just sat there trying to do many of these things some of these people on youtube are doing & couldn't do it. Whatever though, I don't have the game anymore.
The real DOOM guy..... Amazing *_*
Holy crap, you`re so fast! OMG!
He didnt even got to the mambo music on the second level :o
I have a question,in this vid I didn't see u getting rocket launcher on E1M3,but u still got the rocket launcher next mission, how???
that's we can call .. a doom god.

Zero Master I see. I figured you had your reasons haha thanks.
wow this was done on my birthday thanks :)
You're a god damn legend
My best was something around an hour. GG! You are the true master.
grats. how many years have you been playing this game?
truly amazing
At 4:03 when you grab the yellow key, how come nothing happens? In my experience taking the key triggers this mass teleportation of monsters. I did notice you walked slower when you grabbed it instead of running to it. So that prevents the surprise party?
Gurra88 he can grab the key without activating the line def
Dime vs Zero Master on AGDQ, everyone here agree with that...
Damn, that's Impressive.
your a god
MONSTER CONDO!!
Well played
15:10. How did you do it so fast? I tried it many times, but only 1(!) attempt was succesful
And did you use Strafe 50?
Read my post here, should be helpful: www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1414380
Some more questions.
1. 8:57 -- How? (I know it's Grab, I can pick up yellow key through the wall on MAP12 or SSG on MAP16, but I can't do it here)
2. 10:18 -- ???
3. 17:15 -- ???
4. 17:42 -- Teleporter didn't work. Why?
5. 18:31 -- ???
6. 20:14 -- Did you use Strafe50?
1: it's a lot more difficult than map 12, so a precise setup is used. 2: difficult to explain, it's a wallrun I guess, but you need to get close enough to the wall to perform it which requires moving almost straight along the wall with vertical mouse movement, afterwards a specific angle+SR50 for it to work. 3: kind of a wallrun on the barrels below. 4: linedef skip, happens if you move to fast. 5: wallrun, needs a precise setup and SR50. 6: yes.
Иван Денисюк
why go to the secret level if you're gonna skip the super secret level...?
Very nice!
Nice Job Bro👏👏
El juego más Satánico que jugué!
EPIC
Zero Master, you're going to do a speedrun UV for Plutonia 2?, or try again with Plutonia 1?
(Because I really love Plutonia 2 hahaha)
+Стрэлок Виамонтэ I might, but no plans for that right now. Not likely to happen anytime soon.
How do you sneak through the bar doors like you have done in several levels? example level 2.. I was like.. what the fuuuh? Great job though, wow... I'm impressed!!!!
I've seen that done so many times but I've never been able to pull it off.
+Kron Dizzel It's called gliding. Basically have to line your character up pixel-perfect with the lines of the door. Yeah ... it's hard to do, especially when you're getting attacked and under pressure haha
BEAST
Amazing run! I don't know how you use Chocolate Doom though. I remember trying to use it after seeing one of your runs and it felt like the game was running at 20 fps.
You're crazy!
Graphics sure have came long way since the 90s
not that graphics are really that important, especially in a Doom game
Man, this game is way more difficult than the DOOM today....
Well, it's been 22 years.
But this is more fun to play as there are distinctable enemies and also they don't look like the environment 😅 and tougher to beat
Shit, nothing beats that double-barreled shotgun, right? Not even the BFG.
insane
Awesome!!
You're the greatest
How do you get between walls? Is there a trick? Also, making the Arch-Vile open that door for you was amazing lol
It's a collision bug present in pretty much every ID-tech 1 engine games (Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and so on). Basically if you just run at gaps long enough the character just kind of slides through circumventing the need the open them the proper way.
