It's good that you're explaining it like we are not mechanically inclined because some people ride but they don't have a clue about what you are saying.
Thank you. Harley Factory Manual has done a terrible job trying to explain this issue with their drawings. These were very confusing and if I did not find your video I would not know how to connect these hoses.
I watch your visited and enjoy the authenticity and practicality of applying what I see learn and hear. I had a question and didn’t know if the only way to get an answer was to subscribe and pay? If so, I get it, go get yours brutha. I’m a new owner of a 1986 Harley Softail FXST with under 3,000 miles., registered and near ready to roll out- except for oil leaking from the oil line that’s fed into the air filter(?). I’m learning about wet dumping and I’m learning what happens of the bike sits - got it… get out and ride ( I hear that!). I’m also learning about the check valve/ ball and spring in the old pump and how it works…(I think I may need someone to rep move the old pump and replace with a new one - to alleviate this all) vs chasing down leads with my limited growing knowledge. Question? Why is this oil line coming up and even going into the air filter?. is it an oil or air filter line? Why are they getting crosse up? After I run the bike - sounds mint, the oil starts to flow- not just drop. A mechanic said I should keep my thumb over the line going into the air filter which helps reset or re seat the ball? But man what a dirty hassle. Didn’t me to dump this question in the middle of your video comment page- I’ll gladly take it elsewhere - just wrenching my brain to get this operating correctly. Thank you and G-D Bless.
I would take this question to the Greases Garage FB Group as a lot of the members there have bottom breather motors like yours. They will be able to confirm for sure. But to my recollection that line routes to the air filter for emissions purposes and can instead be run to below the frame to empty out there instead, but as I mentioned ask in the group to confirm
Great clear oil line routing information Grease! I have a 1988 Softail and have two slight differences. My oil drain line attaches to a nub on the frame that it then clamps to, and my oil return and vent lines are flip flopped on my oil tank with the return line being on the outside barb. This makes it easier for those that desire to do a full purge when changing their oil.
Thanks! I’ll have to give that full purge a shot next time I change the oil, I’ve never done it that way but a lot of people have commented about that on this video
Someone else also mentioned the same as you about my lines being reversed. I tried reversing them and it actually runs regardless of which way I hook those two up. Probably just one dumps the return oil at the top and the other into the bottom. I’ll see if I can get some more confirmation and if I’ve got that backwards I’ll make a new video and get rid of this one. Thanks man! 🙏🏼
For a 98 softail my vent line is connected to the inner port of the tank. And return is connected to the outer. Service manual shows itvthat way if im not mistaken
He's right. Looked at pictures of my factory untouched evo softail lines. Return from filter (off the 45 degree metal tube) goes on the front nipple, closest to you if you we're kneeling down working on the bike. The inside/front nipple is vent
Hope to see a video that shows how the oil lines are on a 1994 Sportster, i am building a chopper and all the oil lines were cut off short so I do not know where each line goes from the oil tank to the pump and which ones are vents, and return lines, also there is a line on the cam cover by the transmission sprocket is this a return line to the oil tank, any Help would be greatly appreciated
Now you point out the return line is the second one back on my '98 the return line is the front one and that's the one I always pull off and as I change the oil I run the motor and run the oil out until it runs clear and then I put the line back on that one of mine the outer one seems to be the return line. I think I'm going nuts
You might be right about this with your model year I may be re shooting this video anyways to show that step, I never do that but the comments section really wants me to haha
you have the return and vent lines mixed up return is gonna be closest to your right leg when sitting on the bike.... not a big deal but yours are backwards or maybe they are different on some?
I think you’re right, I did run them this way the whole summer but switched them toward the end to confirm. It seems to run the same either way but I think you’re right. I will do another video on this 👍🏼
I'd really like confirmation between return and vent line because even my Harley service manual isn't very clear. On my 99 Fat Boy who knows if someone swiitched those lines through the years. Even with horse shoe tank off and clean it's very hard to see inside to know which port is which. At least I know bottom of tank feeds the oil pump. Good video and I saved it.
The extra torque of the Akita is noticeable so if you can borrow that dog I think it’s worth the effort! 😂 thanks for tuning in brotha I appreciate it 🙏🏼
Thx for your explain how the lines musst be routing. Ist it normal that the oiltankplug get sucked in when set in place cause of the vakuum? I cant find any information about an vakuum. I have an 97 Evo with an Andrews e27 cam and the S&S breather valve installed. Thx from germany 👍
@@greasesgarage Not so strong. While the engine is running its a lite vakuum. You can get the plug easily out. Its more an recognisable lite negative pressure.
It would be close but the later 70’s shovels don’t have that oil filter upfront, this link might show your setup better schematron.org/shovelhead-oil-line-routing.html

I used Braided oil lines and red and blue cover clamps. It looks great
Awesome video! Need to do this for the 92+ EVO FXR routing.

Does the oil return go to the center of the filter or to the outside of the filter?

Do this for evo sportsters as well as the early evo 86-91
These are the times I wish I owned more than one bike
Would like to see this for sportsters as well
Just put a new Evo in, not getting oil to the pump, how do I prime it?

Sucked in place like you can’t get it out once the engine is running?

@spikedabike9203 I would think that your tank vent line would keep that from happening
Use at least fuel injection hose clamps or German style. Nicer to the hose
Would this work for a late 70’s shovel?
