Hahah that’s it brother. We’re here so we just gotta make the best of it lol. My stock modern bike friends will never understand it but there’s motorcycle guys and there’s chopper guys and they’re not the same
Awesome video! Called me out on the “I’m so close” 😂 I’ve got mine (with v stack) on a stock 1988 883 and I pulled it from my stockish 76 1000 without changing anything. I’m convinced (and we know it’s true) that my jets are too big. Smaller ones in the mail and I’ll be going back thru this video to get it right. I’m sick of running out of gas within an hour😂😂
Hahah I had to keep that line in cause I hear it all the time 😂😂 you’re the only one honest enough to admit it but we’ve all said it. Let me know how it goes with the new jets
UPDATE: Got smaller jets in, stock position, had to dial idle way down, it was a run away😂 but ok, running pretty good now, holding idle most of the time but still goes into a weird low idle and stall sometimes? It used to do that bad before, had to keep gas on it at red lights. What causes that?
Also, so I was at 28/66 and went to 25/62. The 25 is working pretty smooth, I may go to the 64 on main, cuz it just feels super slow and yucky, but I wanted to start out light first to try and save some gas. Obviously with a stack, our gas is gonna be shit😂
With the cv you want to make it run lean on the top band of rpm and lean at the bottom and richer in the middle . Big mistake to up your main jet in a cv
I don’t get it ??? How you gonna turn your idol speed screw 1/2 “IN” after lightly seated down ? Can go anymore . Something I’m not getting ? Or did you mean to say 1/2 turn out after seated ? Thanks
I share in your confusion. That part was not clear and the wording contradictory. I think what he meant was, if you unseat the idle screw all the way the butterfly valve will close. So by “turning it in” 1/2 turn, the butterfly valve will open slightly letting the engine idle just enough. If you seat the idle screw all the way, the engine will race once you start the bike. I have a S&S Super E on my 2001 Indian Scout with a stock tear drop air filter & stock pipes. I’ve been fiddling with this carb for a while now & learning through trial & error. The verbiage on the instructions, written or spoken, can be confusing when actually performing the factory settings tuning.
@@yayagazab4449 thanks for your message . I took a better look at the carb and then understood better what was mentioned . I’m used to different carbs not realizing that the screw was to adjust the butterfly . First time messing with an S&S … thanks again !
Thanks for your help Bro. I'm new to kicking my 93ci shovelhead and your technique is working for me. She's kicked back on me a couple of times and that's not fun. I think full hard kicks on the compression stroke is the answer. I leave the ignition off until the kicker is set-up where I want it.
That’s great man! Definitely safer to leave that key off til you’re ready. If it kicks back a lot, you can consider your timing. Too advanced can cause kickback. But if it’s only in rare cases then I wouldn’t mess up a good thing
After changing cams to put points on my "modern" 12-sporty, i can't get a good AFR on the stock CV40, i have found a gazilion-hand Super-E, bought a renovation kit, waiting for the jets, but i am glad you done theses video about the E, it help me to know easely where to start, and i am confident it will be a more suited carb for my config. Point ignition and Super-E, it seems to be a bulletproof combo.
It really is such a reliable setup I think you’ll like it a lot more than the CV, I never cared for the CV carb. Let me know how it goes and thank you for the kind words I’m glad the videos are making it clear and easy 🙏🏼
Glad you’re giving it a shot! Love the super e for any Harley. Thank you, the seat is a custom pan I made and my younger brother did the upholstery work
If you’re getting a sputter or missing at full throttle I would assume you have a lean main jet because I also had a sputter and as you see in this video my main was very lean
@@greasesgarage thanks man I have a shovel with an s&s whis is the worst kickstart ever, I will try to dial it in with your help an hopefully get good results. I rode my panhead for a while now and I really like linkerts, bc how easy they are to start, hope I will get similar results with the s&s once its set up
I just got my first bike, a 93 Softail with a stock 80 inch Evo. It does have a set of pipes and a s&s super E carb. The bike ran fine when I got it but even better with help from this video. Only thing that would've made it better would be if he explained how to read the plugs.
Stoked to hear this! Thank you for commenting. That's a great point about reading the plugs but I think that needs its own video. It's in the works so stay tuned
Incredibly helpful video. When I turn my fuel mix screw in (lean) the idle increases but it never stumbles. I can turn it all the way in to zero and the bike never cuts off. I down jetted all the way to 26.5/66.5 and it does the same. Right now its jetted at 31/74 it seems to have the best performance but I still cant figure out why im having that issue with the fuel mix screw. I have it set at 1 full turn out. Engine is a harley evo with 10:1 compression mild cam stock heads and exhaust
I would use the point between where it increases the idle and where it bogs down when richening the mix. Interesting it doesn’t die when totally turned in though
Great beginners tutorial for sure. I'm not being rude, but I'll add a bit to this though. This is all assuming that your intake boots are sealed, ignition timing is correct and valves adjusted properly. If you are running drag pipes the a/f mix and jets are going to be slightly different than if you're running a crossover tube or two into one pipe. The a/f mix can be checked with a vacuum gauge and/or a can of carburetor cleaner too. One more thing. If your timing plug is out or have a see through plug, you can get real close to the proper idle speed if you can blink your eyes and count the blinks in a minutes time as well! Btw, you're hand jammer and suicide clutch is too cool. It's what separates the men from the boys!
All great points. Definitely have to make a few assumptions to find a starting place for the video but those issues will throw a wrench into what the viewer is seeing here so hopefully people check out these comments. Always more info to share so I appreciate the reply 🙏🏼
I liked your video on the S&S. I just put a brand new carb on a 79 FXR. Started as you and the instructions suggested. But I can't get it right. One of the problems is the mixture adjustment. When I turn it in, the engine stumbles a bit. But when I screwed it out, the idle kept getting faster and faster. It sounds bad. I typically like a slower idle. Any suggestions?
Yes, pay close attention to that segment in the video because it’s two different things you’re adjusting. Set your mix screw first. Halfway between where it stumbles and where it spikes the revs. Once the mix is set, THEN you can adjust your idle screw to whatever idle you like. But the mix screw itself is NOT an idle adjustment. Hope this helps
Slightly wet is ok yes. There will always be a little color to them unless they’re super lean and you don’t want to run super lean. No excessive black carbon buildup and not totally white and crusty. Somewhere in that middle range
Great video Grease!! You helped me rebuild & tune the S&S on the 90 Evo I just bought! I too did the 3rd gear 50-70 roll on and thought it was pulling pretty good, then did the 5 sec full throttle in 3rd gear, super lean plugs as well ha. I am curious, what gear is the 5 sec full throttle main jet test done in? Also, what size main jet did you end up with? I too have a 72 w/ open drag pipes but a stock S&S air cleaner. Was going to start with a 74 main. Thanks again! Great diy content!!
Thanks brotha! So on mine the 72 main and 29.5 pilot works great with my long but open pipes and teardrop S&S cleaner. For this velocity stack I need the 74. If you’re looking lean on the main jet pull I would throw the 74 in and run the test again. That should take out any lean condition. Test could be done in 3rd or 4th but I did mine in 4th
I was told by some old heads S&S super B is for 80ci and lower S&S super E 88ci to I believe 96ci and S&S super G is what I have is for big CI motors. I have a 131 CI merch performance with a S&S super G
Grease! Man, you are my go-to bike/chopper guru now. I built a chopper from the ground up and your videos were invaluable, especially with the wiring. I have a carb question. My donor motor is a 250cc Chinese Honda clone that came off a cheap dual sport and the carb is pretty bare bones; the only adjustment screw is the idle. I put a pod air filter and straight pipe on it. It runs perfectly with even power all through the throttle range, and there's no popping or backfiring when I let off the gas. Can I take this as an indication that the mixture is good enough that I don't need to re-jet the carb? I don't want to ruin the engine by running too lean, but it seems to be fine as is.
I would take it as a good indicator absolutely. If you were lean you’d experience some poor performance and popping out of the carb. If you wanted to be extra sure, run it wide open for a stretch, 5-6 seconds at top gear full throttle, and kill the motor and coast to a stop. Pull the plug and check it for color. It should be a golden brown. Basically anything besides clean white or cooked. That will be your truest test but again, not hearing popping or poor performance is quite a positive sign already
I am yes, awesome kit. I have to put the tear drop back on to test a theory I had so depending on how that goes I’ll either keep the stack or the teardrop
I reset my carb and when i started it was like i had it enriched. I had to turn the idle screw out luke 3 times to get it off 2k rpm. Im just assuming i had it far too tight to start. I have a tach so i could get it to the rpm before i rode it.
@@greasesgarage sometimes I have a bit of a flat spot on the lower end but wide open is fine can you bump up or down on the one intermediate jet or do you have to do em both.
The intermediate controls between idle and about half throttle. The main is the opposite. You can switch just one, and should switch just one, depending on which areas need the tweaking
@@greasesgarage thank you so much for taking the time to let me pick your brain, last thing. When reading plugs once they burn one way like lean can they burn another way? Rich to lean lean to rich or do I have to replace em each time to check how they burn
Great question. On mine the S&S manifold which holds the super E has a hose barb facing up right in the middle of the manifold. Connect your voes hose to that 👍🏼
I work on a lot of guys Harley's I hate the S&S carburetors once they need rebuilt it is hard to get it right again. I have Linkard Bendix and CV40 carburetors on my bikes they all run great.
I have 1330 S&S been off the road in storage for 2 years before that it kept fouling plugs, any idea what it maybe? Also started happening after i got my carby changed Thanks
Dude awesome this video helps me a lot. Do you have one on making your bike start up easily with kick only? I find my starting sequence is a lot more difficult when the engine is warm. Fires up on a dime when it’s cold
Sounds like I have another video to make haha, that’s a great question and I used to have that problem too. Used to give me problems after I’d fill up at the pump. What ignition and bike you running?
@@greasesgarage so I watched your video about what to do when your motorcycle won’t start and between this video and that video I have a much better understanding and I’m sure if I get everything dialed in on the carb and everything is good with the battery etc I should be having an easier time. My starting sequence is good when cold only takes 2 kicks most of the time but when it’s warm I have a different sequence and sometimes that works but sometimes I gotta walk away for about a half hour lol I have the s&s HI-4N electric ignition. Thanks for any help
@@caseycarey5445one thing I can say for sure has helped me (and you may already be doing this) is to never use the choke to start the bike once it’s already warm. It’ll flood immediately. Another thing I do is with the ignition OFF I will find the correct stroke first, then key on, then kick and it almost always kicks over on the first kick this way.
@@greasesgarage good to know that thanks I’m definitely gonna try. I know in the s&s manual for hot start it says to choke it and then give two quick quarter turns of throttle. I’ve found it works sometimes but if it doesn’t happen to fire then it floods. I forgot to mention I have the thunderjet kit installed too but as far as I know it shouldn’t affect starting. It just gives it a third fuel circuit.
@@greasesgarage i think its over 80” has a ton of compression. Ran the same jets you are & it ran like shit haha Running a 72 main & a 28 intermediate now
1998 big twin . But this is an aftermarket carb so it would come new in a box with the jets that correspond to these factory settings unless I'm missing something
I must admit, the idle on my Shovel is quite a bit lower, the oil pressure is still very good at 'potato, potato, potato' rpm. I do need to up jet a little though. I run a bellmouth and I've noticed a bit of lag, but I have had a bit of trouble with the accelerator pump being a bit intermitant, I have since cured that problem, the rubber gaiter was gripping the operating rod and it wasn't dropping back down.
Look behind the screw at the tab it presses on. Turn it in until it just begins to make contact with the tab. Then go 1/2 a turn more. It’s not a super fine science with that one though so don’t stress it, anywhere in that region will get you going and if your bike sounds like it’s at wide open throttle just back that screw off
Hey I got a question. I got a super e on my shovel, when i have the enrichment on, it doesn’t increase my idle, instead it sounds like a vacuum leak, you can hear a sucking sound. Is this normal? The bike seems to start fine, but I live in hot weather
The most common cause for that is an air leak. It idles high because it’s still drawing as you come to a stop but once you’re stopped the draw slows and it eventually settles back down
These are direct from S&S, so I can assure you they work. How about some more context? What motor, what jets do you have? We can’t help you without info
Followed your instructions but i was also confused with the idle instructions?🤔 Can't turn in after seated so i left it at that. Started bike and idled so fast I'm glad it didn't blow motor but after i turned it back out to where it idled low turn it back up to where i thought idle was good bike is running the best it ever did. Delete that video and redo a new one explaining idle adjustment before someone blows a motor.
If you watched the video, you’ll see seated means it just touches the screw to the metal tab. I show it visually in the video. I’ve never had someone interpret it the way you did
Well for a first timer like me I still don't know what tab you're talking about. You say when it seats half turn in🤔 and did watch video several times to figure out what you were talking about
I've had a few CV carbs never a problem. easy to put jets in , and tune. never broke down or messed up. I got this S&S super garbage "E" carburetor on a 94 wide glide and what a piece of crap. Impossible to tune. bike won't run I've checked everything else I'm done. I'm pulling this piece of garbage off. And I'm not even going to sell it to anyone else. I'm going to destroy it.
Just a stock 80 inch EVO , 94 dyna wide glide. It was a friends bike but it would foul plugs, then he died and I inherited the bike.it didn't run though. So I dropped the Boal and it had a 76 main and a 29.5 pilot. The mixture screw was at 2 turns out and the accelerator pump screw was at one turn the plugs were fouled but it would only start with the choke on and run that way till you foul the plugs. It's getting gas, I went back to the factory settings and new plugs, and it won't run at all. Unless I use starting fluid then it dies. I've changed to 66 a main and 68, and a70 main and went down to a 28 pilot . But it just doesn't run till i spray starting fluid. I don't really want to give up on it cause it's American but I'm thinking I have to either take it off and completely rebuild it and start over, or try a CV that I have laying around that's a new take off. And see if that is the problem, or maybe it's something else. I'm, just old and tired off working on stuff after I get out of work as everyone rides by my house enjoying life before the world goes to crap...yes I am whining. 😢
@jimgagne3801 if it’s any help, I run a 72 main 29.5 pilot on that same size motor. I could possibly go down to a 28 pilot though. All my settings are here in this video. If that doesn’t get you running, I would be willing to bet that there’s a problem outside of the carb or with an air leak at the manifold
@@greasesgarage I have a shovel with a shorty I can't adjust my recovery pump the jets are 72 for the main and 29.5 for the pilot what do you recommend in terms of number of turns?

Last update: I gave up. I’m done with this piece of shit. Going back to an uncool CV and ugly ass air cleaner. Fuck this. Might trade it for a Honda.

Really great video.
Thanks for this channel and your videos!
Awesome!
Next, we need a basic CV carb rebuild and tune video 😉😉
Hahah, this channel is gonna force me to eventually talk about CV carbs
th-cam.com/video/iTPPP8jkje4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=B1omBEaviB0VcjQS
I've had great success with following this set up.
Thanks
Just give it a shot you’ll see
I share in your confusion.
@@yayagazab4449 this is correct. You make contact with the plate that opens the butteryfly and once you touch it, go another 1/2 turn
Finally, thank you so much
Brilliant video. Thank you.
Good job with the explanations. Really helpful.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Great job brother, hopefully this shade tree mechanic can get his bike running the way it should.
You can do it man 🤘🏼
Thanks for your help Bro.
@@greasesgarage Thanks again.
Great video for a noob like me, just got my dads 93 sporty chopper with an S&S super E and need to make some adjustments!

Thanks for your response. Keep up the great work
Great video dude!
Thanks!
my fav carb also
Great video will defiantly return
Happy to hear that 🙏🏼
Great beginners tutorial for sure.
So what should the plugs look like when using the kill engine method? Slightly wet?

How about a video talking about carb sizing. So many S&S carbs to choose from, how do I know the right one for my bike?
Great question. In all honesty I’ll have to do some research myself before making that video but I will put it on the list 👍🏼
@@greasesgarage -- I'll do it. Thanks, man!
Are you running the brass Speed Dealer Customs velocity stack? I have the exact set up but I went in a did a once over with some Mothers polish.
Were you able to get it running well and idling properly

I was told when checking plugs with new its gonna take a bit of riding for them to show the condition for you to read them, your thoughts grease?
I would ride it for a day to get the plugs showing some condition but it shouldn’t take longer than that
@@greasesgarage sometimes I have a bit of a flat spot on the lower end but wide open is fine can you bump up or down on the one intermediate jet or do you have to do em both.
No need to replace. If they get rich and you run lean it’ll burn the carbon off. And vice versa as well
I have a 85 Harley Electra Glide 1340cc that has a voes vacuum hose, "where do u connect to the super e carburator ".

Factory settings would include factory jetting , correct?
What are the factory jets ?
It would not because I have no idea what bike you’re riding with this carburetor and it depends on the bike it’s on
1998 big twin . But this is an aftermarket carb so it would come new in a box with the jets that correspond to these factory settings unless I'm missing something
If I set the carb to these settings it's way too rich which leads me to think the jets or a jet is too big.
@leoispoop I would ask the seller, I’m not sure that there’s one set of jets that every super E will always ship with
Hey Grease what do you think of the yost carb spacer?
I haven’t heard of it before to be honest, what’s it for
Grease what year is your Evo? and is your intake manifold a "S&S-160-1628"?
My evo is a 1994 so the “head breather” variety. I will have to double check the manifold tonight
How do i know im starting in the right place when screwing 1/2 turn in
Look behind the screw at the tab it presses on.
Not normal, idle should definitely increase. What air filter you running? Is there a carb support?
Stock S&s tear drop. Has the stock support that comes off the front head.

29.5

Ok i’m not sure where the choke is supposed to be while making these changes. I have an S&S Super.
It can be anywhere it’s not related to these adjustments
What if your engine idles to high when you stop at a light and then slowly drops
The most common cause for that is an air leak. It idles high because it’s still drawing as you come to a stop but once you’re stopped the draw slows and it eventually settles back down

You say when it seats half turn in🤔 and did watch video several times to figure out what you were talking about
Lightly seated... you goofball. 1000% misunderstanding on your part!
There are fake ones out there. I wonder if the previous owner threw an eBay special on there and those fake eBay ones will never run right
This is an early one cause it doesn't have a jet for the air bleed. So I might wrong but I think it's 25 years old at least what I read.
@jimgagne3801 mine is also that style. What size motor are you running and what size jets?
