As a tall driver the q8 etron is my favorite. BMW and Tesla both do not offer seats with variable head rests for their cars. The fixed headrests are too low for me. That‘s a shame especially for the BMW IX, which has otherwise lots of headroom. So the q8 offers the best package for me.

Thomas, how much additional range do you think the heat pump gives the EQE SUV in winter? Realistically? VW and others reckon a heat pump reduces the energy required to heat a car by around 40%. So if you're running the (conventional) heating at say 1.5-2.5 KW when the temperature is freezing, you'll save 600W to 1KW. Compare this to the 25-30 KW these cars are pulling that's like 2-4%. You can maybe double that at lower speeds, but not sure it makes that much difference.
There's a video out there showing 2 identical ID3s, one with and one without a heat pump. It's the nearest thing I've seen to a truly controlled test. At a steady 85 km/h, the heat pump saves 6.7% when heating from freezing to 24C. Nice to have for free, but heat pumps don't come for free. VW charge 1K Euro's when an option. The vast amount of winter range reduction comes from the inefficiency of Lithion-ion batteries when cold, not internal heating. Best guess on a 0C motorway run is a heat pump might add 10-20 km range, perhaps 30-40 km to town driving (where range is rarely an issue).

Wanted to hear your view on the MXP because I just got one, and I totally agree with the assessment. First of all, the 812 Superfast made me think maybe a car can be too fast, but Tesla proves it. Full power acceleration in the Plaid, from a roll or a stop can really make both driver and passenger dizzy. Two, drive in chill… got even more power than I paid for but if I knew what I do now, I would have just got the dual motor. Three, that the yoke offers an unobstructed view is just a side effect. I think it was used simply for novelty not functionality, like many Tesla features, and I would even pay extra for a regular wheel if available. Four, signals on the wheel I’m fine with (better than Ferrari layout with left and right on different sides), but I can’t stand shifting by screen swipe. Quite often I actually use the backup “hard” buttons to shift. Lastly, Germans are still at the top when it comes to “old world luxury” features, but when it comes to the tech and charging (Supercharging network is head and shoulders above everyone else), Tesla is moving the EV game forward by leaps and bounds. Having said all that, my ideal EV would have exterior styling by BMW, interior design by Mercedes, power train and tech by Tesla👍

Your problem with the iX was gesture control, since you’re always moving your hands around in front of the display. You can disengage various gesture features which will stop that from happening. Everyone’s behavior is different, so you get the best of all words as you choose. I have everything switched off other than the volume adjustment gesture control. It works beautifully.

The IX is the best! The price is a lot lower, yet the build quality is far superior to the more expensive Tesla. I have driven the IX and think its a good price for the entry level version. Tesla seem to be making cars that can do 0-60 if race car times. Something that is very unnecessary plus make the car more expensive to insure.

    • @Jajalaatmaar
      @Jajalaatmaar ปีที่แล้ว

How is the price lower? For an IX with air suspension you have to pay 13K more than a model X in my country. Also you get a model X without parking sensors now (LMAO).

    • @Jajalaatmaar
      @Jajalaatmaar ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bossman4401 Yes but then you're talking about an IX with no air suspension which imo isn't really a luxury SUV. Because BMW removed it except for the top trim (starting at 130K here). At that point you might as well go for an EV6/Ioniq 5 and save yourself another 40/50%. Better range, speedy, maybe only a little noisier.
The Audi does get it on entrylevel trims too, like it should and for the Mercedes you can choose it as on option for pretty much any trim. The Tesla only has one expensive-ish trim (and Tesla is ditching the parking sensors due to parts shortage, kind of ridiculous imo).
I think it's simply due to a parts shortage but it makes the IX40 and IX50 very unattractive when you compare all these cars. Especially when you realize the secondhand markt is going to have IX40's and 50's being sold that dó have air suspension. You're buying a gimped version that will depreciate even faster.

@@Jajalaatmaar The iX50 is on the bmw website now for £83k not sure why you think it’s starts at 130k unless that’s in other currencies
I don’t what they sell for in other countries, but even without air suspension no Tesla will ever be more comfortable to drive. In the UK the roads are not smooth around town especially in London. I sold my Tesla within a month of taking delivery because it was very uncomfortable
To be fair to the Tesla I went from A Mercedes S Class so it’s not a fair comparison, but I immediately went back and bought another S Class.
You really need to test different cars and not just jump into a Tesla because of the hype and so called tech. It’s not a iPhone, it’s a car. For me it’s more about the comfort and quality rather than a promise that one day it will fully drive itself. It’s clear that’s a long long long way away if, and a big IF that ever happens
FSD will never work on every road. It’s good for city traffic and highway cruising. Which my S Class works perfect for

I can’t recommend any electric vehicle bc the charging infrastructure sucks so bad in the states. The only reliable chargers are Tesla’s. So I can only recommend those. Better vertical intervention with charging and software. The Germans will be playing catch-up (performance wise) for the next 10 years. Their motor technology is above a beyond any German auto manufacturer can make and probably always will. They just can’t innovate in this EV space like they once with with ICE vehicles. I think the only thing that separates them now is their superior suspension tuning. That’s it!

I had the Etron for 6months and had to switch back to an ICE car primarily because I think the car is quite small. It’s a very desirable car with lots of comfort. Car manufacturers seems to be paying too much attention to aerodynamics thereby making EVs that are aesthetically tragic. The EQE/S are quite ugly cars and doesn’t appeal to me. E-tron is my favourite by far, the other's are all butt ugly 🤮 Tesla is quick, cheap, and practical, but has HORRIBLE build quality, is the loudest and rides/handles the worst. BMW is sooo ugly it's unreal, the simplified "big screen" interior is too much imo. Mercedes cars all have cheap interior and are attached by plastic clips, plus MBUX UI is laggy compared to the rest, and questionable bulbous exterior styling.
The Audi looks amazing, like a proper ICE car that's not trying to stand out by looking 'different', the normal size screens too that aren't distracting and are lower down is great, plus the rock-solid build quality, super noise isolation and ride comfort is a win win. The miles could be a problem for people that drive long distances a lot, but for most you will do less than 200 miles a day, and charge it at home. I barely do 10% of that a day so I'll always be at full charge.

In a objective review it is pretty clear who wins this. The car with best efficiency, best price, best warranty, lowest yearly cost, best infotainment system, most features etc. And this is the Model X. No need to be a fanboy, just read the fact sheets. Look at the weight of the german e-cars with their hundreds of kilograms of wires and chips. They all weight 200 - 300 kg more than the Teslas. And this high weight makes most of them very boring to drive (compared to Tesla and ICE!). I had a SQ8 for one weekend (exchange with my brother in law) and I was begging to get my 50K $ half the price Model Y back because I missed so many features in the Audi. The driving assistance was crap (even Kia or Toyota do way better), very bad performance (0 - 60mph feels like 10sec. even if it's not), horrible infotainment, the Bang & Olufsen sound system never reaches Tesla level in none of the music styles I tried and the driving was absolutly emotionless and boring. I don't know a single german e-Car owner who tested a Tesla before. While absolute most Tesla drivers know other brands from the time before Tesla and can compare. And this is exactly the only reason not to buy a Tesla: Not to know Tesla!

The IX would be cool... If they didn't axe the options.
You can't get air suspension and rear wheel steering on the xdrive40 or xdrive50 anymore. That means you need to get the M60. They also removed opening the tailgate with your foot and the massaging seat for the front passenger altogether due to lack of parts. It's not exactly luxurious to have a less luxurious vehicle compared to ones built a year before for pretty much the same price. Worse is that that some people who ordered an xdrive50 just got told "we're removing air suspension and rear wheel steering from your car, take it or leave it" after waiting many months.
With options the BMW IX M60 comes to 142K including tax (yep it's high here) for me in the Netherlands.
Speccing out a Mercedes EQE SUV with hyperscreen with the same options costs 134k. And then you get massaging seats for the front passenger as well as well as the kinda overkill hyperscreen. If you ditch the hyperscreen it comes to 125kish. Oh and the EQE comes with a heat pump (never buy the EQS without, lol).
Buying either without air suspension seems stupid to me, when the idea is to get a luxury SUV.
If you could get the xdrive50 with air suspension and rear wheel steering for around 110-120k it would be competitive. But BMW doesn't have the contracts anymore to get the parts apparantly.

Apparently it's back and can be added as an option, but for a while there you could only get it in the m version, which just isn't worth it. I test drove them all and the Audi seemed the most comfortable to me but also the most "plain". If the air suspension was an option for the IX, i would've went with it just for the odd time I needed that extra range. The exterior is ugly, but if you get the sport version, it's good enough, and the interior is great.

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html
In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse?
The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination.
If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex or Desertex or Miriam). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) %. So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.
In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette, even in ventilated options.
And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: th-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/w-d-xo.html
More and more natural materials are rising: th-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/yG3z7m6UqNg/w-d-xo.html
Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

But I chose to stand up for those who dont have a voice - well they have a voice, but we are not listening enough. I don’t understand the the constant obsession about animal products ( leather seats). If you’re a vegan personally and live that life, ok. However, most of us eat meat and will continue to do so. A byproduct is therefor leather. Should that be discarded. I’d offer that leather, given the abundance, is more “sustainable” than pumping oil and processing it to make PLASTIC. This whole topic is very European. I’ve never heard an American ever mention that leather seats were any consideration in their decision to buy a car (actually, not having leather is considered a detriment by many). I feel you overdo this topic. I enjoy your videos. Really quite exceptional. Using so many repeated seconds to try and program us against leather detracts.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  ปีที่แล้ว +11

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. They can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even from plant-based materials (like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum). Or the Polestar 3 e.g. is using pine oil. And even if you still create a leatherette seat the classic way with petroleum base without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is very little in comparison to how much oil is used for other car parts or how much oil is burned for fuel or heating. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en). So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.
A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensfin: th-cam.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/w-d-xo.html

For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
Depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the first misuse case, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the priority use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down or even murdered on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse?
We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

@@autogefuehl Wow Thomas. Excellent write up. Some people I know just happen to avoid leather because its the cool thing to do. However, you have put your head into this topic and researched it thoroughly. Its educative for people like me. I am sure with technical reviews, honest opinions and deep thought behind modern concerns like ethical or environment sustainability you stand out in the entire world of reviewers.
I am searching for a new SUV and still deciding between plug in hybrid (like 2024 GLE 450 E 4MATIC) or a full EV and your reviews definitely help.
When do you plan to cover 2024 GLE 450 E 4MATIC and do honest range test analysis for it's EV range ?

I guess Europe is more progressive than the USA in yet another way! Do your research on the requirements for breeding and raising cattle, ie water consumption and methane gas that adds to global warming … which why I am assuming might even be a reason you take an interest in EVs … sustainability … go figure “obsession” - good fragrance, perhaps, but not a nice way to define caring about the planet

Plastic License Plates are more sustainable than metal ones? Since when? Why are we getting rid of everything plastic like plastic straws.
Do not be so gullible. THINK!

If you think about the production energy and weight, yes. Depends on if they hold as long as the metal plates

Pretty important to mention is that a model X built in 2023 gets no parking sensors. Tesla ran out of parts. They want to replace them with camera functionality but as of yet that software isn't available yet, and we don't know how well it will work. This is also the case on new model 3's and model Y's (but at least these got a substantial price drop).
No parking sensors on a 120K car is kind of a joke imo. And seems bad for value retention when older models do have it.
Nearly all the luxury brands are hit by the parts shortage and removing features from their otherwise luxury cars which means a buyer now gets an inferior version to what is already driving around and on the secondhand market. Maybe you should do a video about this and update your old reviews.

Thanks for the info! No way to update old reviews, but I can ask for the specific models; I do included that in new reviews when infos are present like e.g. also shortage of inductive charging pads

Tesla cultists pooh-poohed the idea of Germans ever catching up. Guess what, they did and then some! BMW iX is my new absolute favorite electric car of them all. What a car!! But my god those interiors in the Merc!! Also, as always, great review Thomas. Gratulieren!

The Tesla is like an electronic product, not a car. Just look back those unexplained accidents of Tesla, especially the braking issues, they are losing customer confidence.
