MG is making its mark on the Australian new car landscape with appealing prices, attractive designs and perhaps most importantly, availability in dealerships. It's easy to see why there are now so many on our roads, with the now-China-backed MG recently gaining a spot in Australia's top 10 automakers.
But is it too good to be true? Can MG really undercut rivals and remain competitive, even with an important hybrid variant? To find out we've taken a look at the whole MG HS range. How will the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Hyundai Tucson-rivalling mid-size SUV stand up against rivals in our eight review categories?
In our review video we'll look at price, design, practicality, engine and transmission, fuel consumption, ownership, safety, and round it out with a verdict.
For our test we've predominantly driven the entry-level 1.5-litre turbocharged Core and the top-spec Essence plug-in hybrid to find out at what end of the price scale the HS is best value, and which is best to drive. For more on further variants and other cars in the HS range, remember to check out the full written review on site.

Why do reviewers look for issues with budget brands? They deliver value for money. You should be pulling apart expensive cars even more to see if they really deliver value for their asking price. Surely cars like MG is a better value for more ordinary people than an overrated European car that costs 100-200k that you guys fawn over.

We have the AWD 2 litre. Absolutely love it. Much more power and firmer suspension. I agree about the mirror as it sits too low for me and the 6 speed gearbox is touchy from zero but perfect once moving. I disagree about the air conditioning controls - as the screen is high I can make adjustments without having to look down (like every other vehicle that I drive). The AWD is worth the extra $3k.

A month ago I'd not have even considered an MG, however, happened upon a video and have watched loads more and read reviews with the result I shall be going to my MG dealer next week. Bought a brand new Vauxhall (Holden) Astra last June and I'm seriously underwhelmed. Fortunately due to a lack of used car stock I will only loose about £800 on the purchase price trading it in. Win win, I'd say.

I just bought a Mg HS yesterday, before the decision, I tried Zst and see Jolin, finally buy Hs vibe, compared to zst, Hs has more better driving view and space, more quiet. Generally Havel seems to be more noisy, Mg pay more attention to reduce the noise, in China they advertised to introduce their efforts to reduce noise. Additionally Mg’s interior create a somewhat elegant atmosphere successfully, while jolin are struggling to but failed because some of the cheap material used unfortunately that ruin the effort they devoted.

They did agree with the value of the Chinese Haval H6 in their review 1 month ago. HS is not that well appreciated in its domestic market anyway. Maybe wait for the AWD variant review. The HS uses a 'dry' clutch as a cost saving measure, and the jerk feeling of the transmission used in this model has been criticized by most Chinese reviewers as well.

One of the worst cars ever driven, had it for 3 days as a rental car. I had the core. The safety features almost killed us. The lane assist doesn’t work at all. The cruise control kept accelerating, especially around bends even when going down a hill. The mirrors make a noise when folding. The air con barely works, the dual clutch doesn’t know what it’s doing, same with the engine. The engine and transmission jerk even when cruising. The speed alert kept turning itself off, the blind spot didn’t work and it kept blinding people because the auto high beam doesn’t work.
