From mistakes I have made: hot water turns some mouth pieces strange colours. Might not affect the playing but doesn't look nice. Drinking water and preferably cleaning your teeth before playing makes a tremendous difference to how well it works, how long the pads last and also how the inside smells. I once ate a sugary donut during a day long band call for a show and played straight away. The next day the pads wouldn't actually open because of the sugar. Also, don't forget to wash your cleaning cloths. Stuff them in a pillow case so that don't get tangled around everything else, or something similar, and put through the wash with no conditioner, just detergent. Reeds last a lot longer if you have several in rotation and don't just play one to death.

I just wanna add to this slightly aged comment.. washing your mouthpiece with hot or warm water is fine if it's plastic, but most professional or higher quality mouthpieces are made of hard rubber/ebonite which reacts with warm or hot water. This discolours the mouthpiece, and while this doesn't affect playing the rubber stinks and it kinda looks bad.
I honestly thought it was basic knowledge to not eat before playing any wind instrument, but good reminder lol

I cringed. I usually bring 2 reeds with me, I BROKE BOTH in the one day. The rest of the day I had to position my reed all funky just so I could get a sound!

Don't use those reed cases if you live somewhere dry. Get a Reed bag instead with 58% humidity. It won't warp them
Why doesn't my clarinet play when I drool too much in it? Like after playing for 5hrs in my school band it gets rlly hard to blow the octave higher, so I'll just fake play
Maybe changing reeds can help.
Make sure to periodically swab your horn when playing for longer than an hour. If you don’t have the time to swab your clarinet during rehearsal, taking off the mouthpiece and barrel and gently shaking out moisture can be a quick fix too. It’ll help with the moisture buildup. Also, playing on the same reed for that long has a possibility of getting waterlogged, which could further attribute to the problem. Happy Playing :)
Another problem that it could be is there may be a small tear on the face of one of your pads on the upper joint. I've had customers that after playing for a bit the instrument seems to "go away". The tear can allow moisture to soak into the felt on the inside of the pad that can then swell and cause a leak. Only a professional repair technician will be able to find and fix this problem.
The reed becomes oversaturated and "water" (saliva) gets stuck behind the Reed in the mouth piece which makes a really gross sound, all you need to do it take off your Reed and with a cleaning cloth or even your hand wipe the space behind the reed

Hot water can do terrible things to some mouthpieces, and I’d recommend avoiding it.
What if you don't have all of the rags and brushes? I only have the pull through rag and cork grease. My instrument didn't come with that stuff, even though it's used.
you have to buy it from them... the video was basically an ad to buy care packages...
ok I'm a year late but if you ever read this, its fine if you don't have all of those rags. I've never heard of most of them and I've played clarinet for a few years. My clarinet seems to be doing great so my guess is that all the other rags are just nice extra accessories but aren't required to have. At the end of the day practicing is the most important!

This video is a few years old, and not sure where the background music originated.
I got my clarinet few years ago from my school band and.. its quite some time. The silver keys etc are rusted (maybe). I get a cloth used for only clarinet and wipe it's exterior carefully but the rusting doesn't get out. Are there any ways to clean them? I'm quite worried to damage the instrument if I clean it I apply more pressure.
at that point, i would just take it in to have it professionally cleaned.
What about oiling the reed before you play and replacing it with a fresh reed after cleaning???

How to clean a rusty keys of clarinet?
All well and good but a crucial point was not addressed here at all. Old greasy becomes sticky and keeps accumulating in layers that eventually cause the cork washer to rip apart. You have not provided instructions on how to get rid of old grease before reapplying

It is ABS resin, which is basically a sturdy plastic commonly used for injection molding!

Why not use water?
Water could do damage to the mouthpiece depending on what type of water you use.

Good video except for the mouthpiece brush.
Don’t clean the mouthpiece with hot water, NO it will eventually go brown, use warm water.
Also never get your cork wet. I never put my mouthpeice in water and i just use mouthpeice spray.

That brush is for a brass mouthpiece! Please don't use it on a clarinet mouthpiece, especially if you are smart/lucky enough to get a better mouthpiece.

Sorry for any confusion. In a lot of the music industry and jazz community "horn" is commonly used for any wind instrument.
