I am an oil painting artist and we have been using this technique for a long time for a charcoal or pencil drawing before applying the paint. You can go to an art supply shop and look for a spray can of a product called “Fixative” (made by a variety of manufacturers). It is readily available. Hair spray does the job too.
For a little while now I've been messing around with power carving and torching wood for color. I have to say, now that I'm getting more serious about it, it's becoming very challenging. I came across your channel, and following your tips/tricks and watching your method, I've learned a lot. Just saying thanks. It's a fun hobby for me to disappear into. Keep up the honor in the trade, as well as the patience in the teaching my friend.
I remember doing this with pencil drawings back in high school but never thought to transfer that process to woodcarving. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the tip and keep up the good work with the videos! :)
I started a few month ago doing simple relief carvings and did so after seeing your videos. I have carved a mouse, a rose, a butterfly and a single Celtic knot. They are very simple drawings but you can definitely see the order in which they were done. From really rough to I may be getting the knack of it (lol). Oh and I am currently doing Kevin, one of the minions from the movie. Most of all I am enjoying myself and my children and grandchildren are now making request. I think my next project will be a dragon for my grandson. I do have some difficulty doing the stippling (I think that is the correct term....the little dots done for background.....I may be overthinking it but all my projects lack that feature because when I do it practicing it just looks terrible. But you videos are an inspiration so keep up the good work.
That’s awesome Mr. Pendergrass! Stippling can be very difficult, I’ve recently looked at a piece and noticed I could have done better. Not all projects need stippling. But when you do stipple just make sure all the “dots” are close together and “overlapping” overlapping dots is your secret to stippling.
I just love watching your videos. Your accent is brilliant and I sit with a big smile on my face listening to you ( I am English). I can't wait to start trying my first project.
Haha thank you for your comment! Yes people usually make fun of me or tell me they love it lol. So glad the videos are helping you. Let me know if you have any questions Marretta!
I am just preparing to do some very intricate power carving on a project. Wow, is this ever a great tip. I will definitely be trying this. I have dealt with losing my lines as I work and it can be frustrating and lead to mistakes and extra time. Thank you for sharing.
🤣🤣Love how you explain to go outside with the hairspray - I personally don’t use hairspray, but I’m sure many women spray this DAILY directly on their head. Seriously though, great tip !! Thanks for sharing 👍👍
worable fixative works better than the hairspray, also put tracing paper under your carving hand, Thank you, I have learned a lot from You, your a good instructor
Cornelius, thank you for this! Just started my first project for my whiskey shelves where I am craving letters. Your tips are going to make my project sweet!
There's a product for spraying on pencil artwork called fix or fixative. Some is workable fix and some perminant. can get it online or at an art store.
do you have avvideo or instrucions on how to create thedoeny fluffy feathers using modeling paste and fine sawdust example on the neck of a paliated woodpecker
Do you wash the hand oils from your pieces at the end of a project? I give my pieces a quick rinse, then a good scrubbing w/blue Dawn and a soft toothbrush, rinse soap iff without saturating or submerging my piece in water. That elimiates the need to sand hairspray off.
You can use fixative as well. It is used for artists drawings in pastel, charcoal, etc. Same principle as stated here. Usually sold in art stores like Blick's or Michael's.
We did this is my art school drawing classes, spraying it on finished charcoal drawings so they could be handled without messing up. You can also get more professional spray call called Fixatif. Krylon makes it.
Is there any reason you wouldn't use spray varnish or quick drying lacquer? I use it all the time and love it. I also do a lot of scroll saw projects where I will stick a printed pattern on it. For that I use 3M spray adhesive or double sided tape. Just ideas!
Good tip with the the 3M spray and and stencil patterns! The reason I use hairspray is because the hairspray “sticks” to the wood and doesn’t “bond & seal it” like lacquer or varnish will. I only use lacquer or varnish when my project is done to seal my wood.
I am just starting out but I aim to get better. I have been using soft woods but with unpredictable results. has anybody any suggestions as to the best types of wood to use?
Thank you for this useful tip I have not used it yet, but I have used unperfumed hair spray to act as a fixative for pastel painting in the past, as it is cheaper than the art stores fixative and works just as well, so there is a tip for you Cornelius, I hope you find that useful too . Regards from John in England.

Woodcarvers never, ever, make mistakes, Happy! We do however, have the occasional reason to redesign. ;¬}

Hi,
I couldn't even draw this let alone carve it! LOL
Thanks so much for this tips and all the other help you give us!
Tom
Haha Glad you enjoyed it! Hey you never know unless you try :)
Just starting out, love your tips! Northern Ireland viewer.
I think you have found your calling on TH-cam and it is this: to teach other makers like me how to do things right.
I appreciate that man! Thank you for the kind words!

We were taught this in art college for charcoal & pastel drawings. If you cant afford acrylic fixative use hairspray. It does the job.

Thanks for the tip, im working on some moon shaped carvings at the moment and I've smudged the lines a few times now so this should save me some time.
Right on!

I swear by the spray glue for scroll projects, too. It's how I was taught. I ventured into other ways, but keep coming back to the spray glue.
Thanks for the tips man ,loving your channel
Cheers

Thank you Tim! Glad you are enjoying the channel man!
What a great tip! Thank you for sharing!

You are welcome!
Any suggestions on carving over all must have bits for carving on a budget?
Get a cheap pair of carbide rotary burs on amazon and maybe a few pair of dremel burs
Looks like a great idea.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
That's pretty brilliant
Thank you
Have you tried using a micron pen or any archival type ink over the pencil work?
I would but that would bleed through the wood
Thanks for the hair spray tip. I'll be using that tip.
Right on!
Would Spray on Shellac do the same thing?
Since it is oil based I would advise against it.
I am just starting out but I aim to get better. I have been using soft woods but with unpredictable results. has anybody any suggestions as to the best types of wood to use?
