Matt, just retired 67 y/o. Looking for a new inexpensive hobby. Love your tutorials. Ready to purchase a stylo dremel unit. U r my go to guy. I enjoy your breakdown points. Tim
I love your honest spirit. You made me feel real excited to start a new hobby. I went garage saleing with my grandmother one day with Ten bucks in my pocket. I have no need for added "STUFF " as i am 47 and lived threw my overload of Nik Nak phase.. Ha.. BUT!... lo and behold.... I suddenly found out that I entered my " I want a unendless great book kinda hobby phase !" metaphorically of course.. Read a book!?.. blah. Not me... sry.. long story short. I was very excited when I saw this little 6 by by 12 gray tool kit!😄 I love tools... and thinking of course it has to be a set of some kind!.... right?.... I FOUND IT! I FOUND MY UNENDLESS GREAT BOOK KIND OF HOBBY!" WOOD CARVING! Yep.. And like you said, there are unendless ideas, and practices, ECT, ect... Oops sry...rambling agion.. lol writing a book. Ok...... Sooo it was a ROTARY tool kit with 60 accessories. The motor is 120v/60hz. 16,250 RPM's ( No load ) "I don't know what that means".. 🤔 The make is Chicago electric power tools. What is your opinion about this as a starter?
I just started carving as I've taken an interset in scroll and Celtic patterns on furniture and corbel shelves I find your vids super helpful in all the steps you cover. Thank you
With your inspiration, it’s time to bring out my 40 year old set of carving gouges and select some additions to the process , especially the Marathon unit. I very much appreciate you putting the time into your tool and supply list and wish all TH-camrs would be as helpful. Old man, new subscriber. You rock.
Just bought a Dremel and want to get started. I have a project I want to try. I have a piece of wood I found on the side of the road and it seems that it is good for practice. I sure hope I can get it right. I watch your videos and hopefully learned much to do a simple task.
Love the way you break it down, bro! That's why we tune in!! Hope everyone at the Cornelius Casa is doing well! I pray for the Lord's blessings upon you all!
Love your videos. I got into wood carving afew months back and it's my new favorite hobby. I learned a lot from your vids and I look back constantly to re learn and reference. Thank you, you're a great teacher
DUDE. From one southern creative creature to another: I came looking to see what bits I need to shell out for this time, and I am leaving goin "Huh...I actually have that already". Thanks for saving me some grip. Like, genuinely.
Thank you Matt , I’ve recently taken an interest in tiki carvings and I found that you on TH-cam . Great to watch you carve and learn . I wish you all the best
Hi matt, at the first i have to say a big thank you for what did you and do now, it's amazing, I don't know you anything about you,but i feel you are is my close friend.. My name is Ali and Im from IRAN🇮🇷,(yeah, that's right, The same country that is called the enemy of America in the media)(Shame on Politics😞) anyway.. Your speech is vey impressive, and for me it changed me and changed my way.. now i have goal, because of your encourage to trust in myself and do something now.. If you are a religious man, what you do is no different from helping a person that have nothing and God will reward you for doing this. Thank you again, and I wish you to be healthy and rich🧿🌹🙏👍💸
I purchased this to do some light PC case modification along with the dremel tungsten carbide cutting bit. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfPgcZ5_Cl0HDUKkMJAKde11YKQZVgMoR I had to remove a flange from my PC case that was preventing my monitor cable from fully seating in my GPU's HDMI connector, and after hacking away at this 2mm flange with a hand file I broke down and purchased this (at Home Depot).I have to say it's fantastic, and by far the best rotary tool I've used. No wobble or give from the shaft, plenty enough torque for light metal work, and decent battery life. The WC bit ate through the steel frame quite easily, and the chuck seemed to hold it firmly. This may seem obvious, but I especially appreciated the cordless nature of the tool since I was holding it at odd angles to ensure I didn't shower the inside of my PC with metal shavings.TL;DR, this is the one to get for light-medium duty work.
Thank you Matt. for your brilliant vid. My only regret is that I never met you earlier, but the time I have left, you give me so much inspiration to have a go. God bless you.
What a wonderful video you created! And you're such an enthusiastic supporter of our woodcarving adventures! I'm a total beginner and I started out by buying a Hardell rotary tool. It just doesn't have the torque to do the heavy detail of the tree of life medalion I drew on basswood to be part of a cabinet I refinished. You're helping me to understand where I need to go with this next. And, to continue to be excited about a potential artistic future. Many thanks, and I've subscribed.
hello from puerto rico thank you for your videos resently i had a stroke and thanks to your videos it has motivaded to recuperate and start to wood carving and i have learned a lot thank you
I stumbled across your videos on utube and have watched a few of them now. Can't wait to watch more of them. You have a great way of teaching. Going to purchase a Dremel stylo in the near future and give it a go.

Awesome video mate! You've got it all figured out. I really need to get one of those magnifying lamp things! That looks like a great tool, not sure how portable it would be though. I'll look into it 👍😊👣
Thank you for posting this. I’m really encouraged by you! This is my first video on power wood carvings. I’m interested in carving combs. Does the wood type matter to what type of burr that’s used?
Hi I want to thank you for your videos. I have always loved making things and I started carving my own guitars a while back but stopped now for years because of the place I am living doesn't have any place to carve big pieces of wood like those. But just recently my aunt passed away, it seems that she is talking to me and pushing me to get back to doing what I love no matter what make it happen. So I had glued some pieces of poplar together 1.5- 2 years ago but didn't know what to do with it. I think she is acting as my muse from beyond the grave. So I never had done any wood burning or really any detail carving at all. a big guitar shape isn't that hard really just take layers off till you find it hidden inside the piece that you are working with. So basically I had to start from scratch and relearn the things I use to know and teach myself how to carve detail and also how to do woodburning in 4 days so I could present it to my uncle at the wake/memorial this last weekend, she would have loved it. I was working during the day then watching and practicing carving and burning techniques till 2:30-3:30am in the morning close my eyes and get back up at 4:15 to go to work. 4 maybe 5 hours of sleep from Monday night to sat morning. but I finished it and I really wanted to thank you for the videos. you rock
Which grit level do you find is most useful for your Duragrit pointed conical burs? As a new carver, I truly appreciate your videos and generous sharing of info and tips! Thank you so much for sharing.
A good way to clean the inside of your power carved grooves is with a swivel pin vise with a diamond burr, a small sphere works wonders just discovered this very cool
Just starting out, really enjoy your videos. A question: I have to carve a ring box with names, letters pretty small. Would you follow the same concept of continual light passes until deep enough, or would you switch to a flat engraving bit, like the dremel 108/111.
Just getting started with dremel carving with a 4000 and Flex shaft. Storing Burrs? The box used I get but thought each individual burr had an individual tube of some kind. What do you suggest? Only have a few burrs at this point, but will be getting more and want to do it right. Please let me know when you get a minute. Thank you very much!!!
I love your videos! I’m wanting to make a lighted box with a short scripture on it. I have seen something similar where the words are completely carved out so the lighting from the night light looks pretty. Do you have any videos on this? I will be using real thin basswood.
Thank you. I need to get back to my wood carving. Been making costumes for my cosplays lately so really need to get back to it again. I also need to find those inverted bits. hard to find here in NZ and postage at the moment is expensive as well as unreliable
I am planning to buy a cordless mini rotary grinding and engraving too,l had not try doing this or how to do this i will try to do engraving on my metal vacuum water tumblers thanks for the video.
Hello! Thank you for your videos! Beginner here, I’ve been watching your videos and you use those 3 little round ones a lot. What are their sizes and how do I find them? The link in the video only had 2. Im not sure which one to order on its own. Also, the sand paper linked is unavailable, anything specific I should look for in sand paper? And the dust mask link isn’t working anymore. Anything specific to look for there? I’ve just been using a 3ply face mask like you wear at a drs office, I’m not sure if that’s enough. Thank you!!
Brilliant video, thanks a million! Can I ask you a question pls... if I wanted to carve out letters that are 3mm deep and 3mm wide (negative space) what would be the best bit to use?
Great tutorials. Do you have some suggestions what type of wood is best for carving ? I tried your advices but had problems with the wood which was irregulary hard on some places so my tool "flipped". I think it was Blacknut(not sure if the translation is correct) wood I used. Anyway thx for your tutorials Greetz from Germany
Do your small bits ever get plugged up? Also, do you have any recommendations or possibly a link for dust collection. I have COPD, so it doesn’t take much to really cause me problems, and we live in Idaho, so 5 or 6 months in the year it can be to cold to work outside. Thanks Matt.

Hey there! Very happy to hear that! Do you have a Facebook? You can join woodcarvers of the world Facebook and post it there. If you don’t have a Facebook you can email me at matt@howtowoodcarve.com
Been watching a lot of your videos recently as I am looking at starting engraving. Great content! What RPM do you use when engraving wood? I am debating between a Dremel 4000 and Proxxon IBS/E (but the Proxxon maxes out at 20,000RPM).
Hello there. Love your videos. I just purchased the Marathon micromotor but when I looked at the handpiece, it only accepts 1.23 mm burrs and bits. It seems all of my current burrs are 3mm or bigger. Is there another hand piece or collet that will allow this to accept the bigger burrs? PS this question is also on another video.

Just starting out, really enjoy your videos. A question: I have to carve a ring box with names, letters pretty small. Would you follow the same concept of continual light passes until deep enough, or would you switch to a flat engraving bit, like the dremel 108/111.

Wish there were super micro bits, think scrimshaw where your only going a few thousands of an inch. I could get so intricate in carvings.
I love your videos! I’m wanting to make a lighted box with a short scripture on it. I have seen something similar where the words are completely carved out so the lighting from the night light looks pretty. Do you have any videos on this? I will be using real thin basswood.

What RPM do you use when engraving wood? I am debating between a Dremel 4000 and Proxxon IBS/E (but the Proxxon maxes out at 20,000RPM).
Awesome 😊
Hello there. Love your videos. I just purchased the Marathon micromotor but when I looked at the handpiece, it only accepts 1.23 mm burrs and bits. It seems all of my current burrs are 3mm or bigger. Is there another hand piece or collet that will allow this to accept the bigger burrs? PS this question is also on another video.
