    I grew up in pioche. The hill behind the gem theater is lime hill. The cross has been there ever since I can remember. It use to have power going to it. School projects had us go change light bulbs in it so we could light it up for Christmas.

    I have not ever seen Pioche is such a way that you have presented it. I like your report on your power system and it's making me think twice to upgrade to 800 ah of batteries as we haven't had a chance to give our 400 ah system a real test.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marv, I personally can't imagine needing 800 Ah unless you intend to run the a/c. We're using juice like it's going out of style.

    What an interesting situationship. I always assumed that Nevada stood for "desolate and nothing to see because its all a desert" but to see so much variety with stone formations and general lay of the land is quite interesting. I figure with Colorado plateau terminating along the border of Utah and Nevada this is nature's last hurrah to peculiar sand stuff.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once you get 100+ miles north of Vegas, the rest of Nevada is entirely different. It's the whole Basin & Range system that makes it so. Stretching all the way from Salt Lake City to the Sierra Nevada, the Great Basin is a large terminal area, meaning that water flowing there never leaves the area. It's marked by many north/south oriented mountain ranges (some of which exceed 11,000'), each separated by broad, flat lowland desert valleys. Many of those mountain ranges are high enough to support an alpine ecosystem including aspen trees, tundra, bighorn sheep and mountain goats, ermines, etc., whereas the valleys are sandy, dusty sagebrush. In between each mountain range and valley is a piñon and juniper zone like what you see in this video. Then there are anomalies like the Ruby Lakes area, in the Ruby Valley just east of the Ruby Mountains near Elko that are a huge spring-fed wetland that supports all manner of migratory waterfowl. It's not at all what you'd expect if your sole exposure to Nevada is Las Vegas.

I always enjoy your overview of the local history, it enhances the experience of seeing the area, as I'm guessing it does for you. Nicely done!! You always do such a good job of showing an area's history and details most rv'ers would like to know....gotta say, we have a nice solar set up, but yours is making me a little jealous, lol!😉

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! Your comment means a ton to us. As for the solar, we found out last season that we didn't quite have enough to bring us back to 100% each day, so although we added one more battery this season we doubled the solar panels. That did the trick! We're now on week 4 without anything for power other than solar, but tomorrow's forecast into the low 90s may just make us break out the genny for the a/c.

    Nevada is like a real time machine, Marc. So many historic remnants still exist wherever you go out in the Nevada wilderness.
    Great sharing on all these areas. I enjoyed watching immensely. Really glad your new solar system is working out beyond expectations. Thanks for the great job you do. What temps are you dealing with now?
    Were you expecting to visit Carson City? The original Nevada State Prison has recently turned into a historic tour guided facility. Unfortunately, it became an instant success and they are booked through June. They are still taking tour reservations for July and August. Their guided tour is apparently that good.
    Lots of research was done and incorporated into the tour narration by the many professional and volunteer workers.
    I didn't know anything about it and all of a sudden It came to my mind that I should look up the historic Nevada State Prison. And viola... it is a tremendously successful recent (end of 2021) tour guided facility. They haven't even completed their first year.
    Gord

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Gord! Appreciate the tip on Nevada State Prison, but with that backlog of reservations it sounds like our visit to that facility will have to wait. We'll be not far from there next week. This week we're in Goldfield, where temps are well above normal into the upper 80s during the day, until tonight when a sharp cold front comes through to drop highs by about 25 degrees. However, it's been cooling off beautifully at night.

    • @gorrdd
      @gorrdd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GrandAdventure Thanks Marc. I figured you would be long gone by July. But wanted to share that with you anyway. A tip for another season or maybe later this season, as you head back west.
      Nevada is not yet hot like Texas is right now. We are in the nineties every day. May just passed right into June, this year.
      Next week we get the same cool down as you do with highs in the upper seventies and low eighties here in DFW.

    Marc, will the savings on Boondocking help offset the higher fuel cost and initial costs off lithium solar? Many questions on the lithium solar setup.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Greg, it most certainly will. We're into the lithium and solar for around $7,000 spread over two years. At $40/night for an average campsite, we'll recoup that investment over 175 nights of camping. The ability to camp anywhere and not even think about electricity usage, however, is priceless to us.
