I have to say that this is the most peaceful and non disturbing way to going through that dam brigde,..it it make look like that the river did it all the stirring him self and all you had to do it it was to just relax and enjoy the wiew,...oustanding nautical calculations Skipper!!!!
Wow! Impressive helmsmanship. I am struck by the dependence on, and knowledge of, river current necessary for proper navigation. This really brings home the amount of experience that river pilots must have. Very interesting. Thanks.
Canoeing to the Gulf in 2016, the M/V Cairo was sliding under the bridge as we were leaving the mouth of the Yazoo headed down. We had stopped in Vicksburg for a day and a half, which included a visit to the USS Cairo museum, coincidentally enough. What are the odds that out of the hundreds of towboats on the River, we'd see the M/V Cairo ?
And greatings from Bulgaria! I was work on 3000 HP "P. Karaminchev" towboat on river Danube a couple of years. Now I`m work on passenger ship. Great video! Only if I have a chance to work a little on a Mississippi river... P.S. Sorry my English...
That was the m/v Christian Brinkop. Used to be the m/v Phoenix. I ran Relief Cap't on it for some time. And yes, those are ALCO's also. It was rated at 6,400 HP. And I sure don't think I'd ever have somebody on the head coming down on this bridge, but to be honest the left piers are the ones that get hit by the stern when you don't hold your point long enough. I watched someone have to lift off them once, and it was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.
Good job, Chris...!! ✅. Vicksburg is my favorite to watch southbound with a Good load, next would be the lower Memphis bridge with them fleet barges on the east bank Right on the south side. 😱😬🙄
Don't forget the Economy Boat Store dock right under the lower bridges. When I worked there in the mid 90s, we'd have a lot of water kicked up onto the fuel flats by southbounders finally getting to where they could drive ahead again.

Hello, It appears to be a great job ! Please can you tell me is that still the old Vicksburg bridge , I had a friend to exchange drivers mirrow's on a semi truck, back in the 1960 on that narrow thing , well it wasn't so narrow for the tug boats, because it also had a train tracks hooked on the side , I've always liked boats (Tugs) and the ferry boats also, but drove semi's for about 41 years, you know in life we are where GOD wants us, me it was trucks and others all kind of boats ...liked the video . Do you guys loose sleep the night before negotiating the bridge, especially going with the current? I have seen the scrape marks left by those pilots not skilled enough to get through. That was a nice piece of piloting! It looks like playing the cross current is the real test here.

@@cvic13 10-4. I worked with Corps of Engineers on Dredge Jadwin that has 3 EMD's & the William James which is a newer boat with 3 Cats. All the Corps boats are under powerd tho
I worked on one of the bigger towboats back in the seventies. We were basically pulled down the river by the current usually with 36 loaded coal barges in tow from Cairo IL to Perez Landing south of New Orleans & pushed empties back up river. It took less than half the time to get the loads down as it did to push the empties back up. I worked on the MV Mable Kelce 30 days on & 30 off. It was shift work with the same number of crew on duty at all times each working 6 hours on & 6 hous off.
The MV Mable Kelce ws a big boat. It had 3 stacks/engines, all living areas were fully air conditioned. There was a large lounge area with sofas, card table, tv & library. The dining room table was always loaded with a wide variety of good tasting food. The 2 lady cooks were excellent. Days were filled with odd jobs, chipping paint etc until it was time to "make tow". 6 hours spent tightening cable with ratchets & a pipe was exhausting. Making tow could take 36 to 48 hours.
