    I just purchased my first scale trains diesel engine. It is a dash 9 in the Union Pacific colors. First thing I noticed out of the box was that the brakeman side ditch light was not working ditch lights were not working. I contacted scale trains and they told me it's an easy fix. They told me how to remove the shell, when I remove the shell I found out what the problem was. The inner shell that contains the weight was not screwed onto the bottom chassis. The screws were there but they were never put on. Once I put the screws back on and tested it both ditch lights came on. Also I noticed when I had the shell off there was a detail piece that had broken off. The glue was there but the peice wasn't. I also noticed glue gobbs and plastic flashing on the locomotive.
    Over the years I have collected dozens of Athearn and Lifelike locomotives both their premium and they're cheap ones. Even in there cheap ones I never had a broken or missing piece or flashing on detail parts. I strongly believe that one reason is because their quality controls are super tight. Athearn in particular are Nazis when it comes to their quality control. Scaletrains should take a page out of Athens quality control play book it'll be much better for Scaletrains, for us and the hobby in general.

      I've run into quality control issues from almost every manufacturer recently. Not sure if it's because of all the extra detail parts or what.

    I absolutely LOVE these T4 locomotives. The only problem that I have is that the lights were either way too dim, or didn't work at all. That's why I'm replacing all of my ScaleTrains lights with LEDs and optic fibers. They are really good for these engines.

    I am a newbie getting into model railroading...it has been 35 years since I have even played with model trains. I was looking for someone who showed how they modeled their track from the beginning. I found your videos, the 2.0 version, and was instantly gratified. I binged on them for the past week. I learned a lot from your travails over the two years you video'd. It was also really cool to see your honesty in dealing with life (outside calling, motorcycling, just worn out, money issues) while also having a thrill, most of the time, in creating your layout. I hit #18, which was video'd 2 yrs ago and then there was a void. So I searched for your most recent posting and it was this one. So two points...thank you for your videos regarding making a layout happen, the ins and outs and the ups and downs. I truly learned a lot! Second, as with the others below, I hope all is well in your world these days. Whether you post again or not, I hope all is well...Know you can!

    Have a fleet of 7 of those T4's, 6 of those girls are BNSF and the other the GECX. Love em. With the combination of both Intermountain and Scaletrains I will have a fleet of 12 T4's, definitely monster pullers. Both Intermountain and Scaletrains did a bang up job with the T4's, glad Athearn didn't throw their hat into the T4 ring.

    As for the sounds of this loco winding up: this is how turbo diesel engine sounds, it's super prototypical and i actually like it. Ill be purchasing 2 of these different numbers of course.
    Keep up the videos

    Hey Deryk, great review on the Scaletrains Gevo Tier 4 . I recently bought one, I guess I was a sucker for the see thru grills . Very happy with the model visually but thought there maybe something wrongful with the sound on mine especially when notching up, it sounds like a rocket blasting off with static . Thanks for sharing your experience on this train , now I know that this is typical on this model , I was ready to ask for another one at the hobby shop. Anyhow talk care , stay safe my friend.

      Thanks buddy. Yes it turns out it is the correct sound file and there is nothing wrong with it. I still don't like it though, so since I have the Lok Programmer, I uploaded a different tier 4 file from ESU. Sounds much better. I always recommend the programmer to people if they are going to use ESU decoders a lot. It's totally worth it.

      @@DGModelworks Hey Deryk thanks for getting back, yes I've heard of people programming the sound file from the Intermountain Tier 4 instead of the scaletrains sound files. Will definitely look into that .

    The locomotive is fantastic! Very well detailed. The hollow grilles are a differentiator.
    The only thing left was the brake chain (this plastic chain, divided into two pieces, was a breeze).
    But, aside from that detail, the locomotive is superb. I want one!

    Regarding that sound. I have the loco and I questioned the same sound. I think scale trains tried to simulate the “rumble” sound heard when the actual loco notches up. However, their simulation came across like crackling and popping. I have the Intermountain version. It’s nice all the way around; sound, lights, cosmetics, I like it best.

    Good Review! I purchased one of these smh ..... next to Intermountain what I sacrificed for price I gave up detail and quality....scale trains is cheaper takes longer for delivery .... around 159 for dcc and sound vs $239 for dcc Intermountain sound I choose Intermountain... scale trains takes a month Intermountain 3 days max as far as rolling stock scale trains does an excellent job! But you have to wait a month before you can roll your stock!

    I had the same issue with the ditch lights. CV 112 sets how fast they flash and CV 132 sets how long they flash AFTER the horn is blown. Me personally, I set CV 112 to 16 and CV 132 to 180 for a more "realistic" flash rate and speed. Another great review too!

    Got my CN "sisters" today. Very happy. Sound files do all appear to sound the same. Sounds like a Peterbuilt notching up, to me. Don't have nearly the amount of glue on my shells. Maybe because they are the CN 'see through' grates that they took better care to install. Yeah, I was bummed out that the walkway light does not light and the truck chains aren't metal, but I can change the chain easy enough if I want to. The three things that made ME decide not to do Intermountain are: they didn't have a 2016 production of a CN model, really - really didn't like the way the exhaust looked, and the one thing that I have noticed with a number of Intermountain bogeys - you can see the gearing (and wiring) quite clearly. So I'm satisfied. Also, now I have a full ScaleTrains oil tanker unit train, with buffer cars and with DPU lights.

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool! Glad everything worked out for you and that you are happy. That's all that matters. I do agree about the IM gearing and wiring showing, that is a little bummer.

    I bought 2 of these locomotives as well, i also had the missing grill issue but i was lucky to find it in the box, and with the sound, I have see 2 of these units together and that is actually how they sound when they notch up, I thought the same thing at first but then i looked at my videos and it was correct

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you were able to find your grill. Thanks for the info on the sound. I guess it's prototypical, but I'm still not a fan of it. I think I will reprogram it to a different Tier 4 sound file from Loksound.

    Nice review Deryk! Those spinning bearing caps are COOL!! The level of detail is incredible too. As far as volume, I don't think that the factory has them turned up. That's easily fixed.
    A few other people with hearing problems don't seem to like the sound.... I think it's the BEST sounding modern Locomotive I've EVER heard! 👍👍
    It actually sounds like it's got a Diesel engine - not just a series of whines.
    It's great that you're able to get nice stuff like this. I hope that never changes my friend. Oh, and the 2-piece chain is to negotiate 22" radius curves, without self destructing!!

    Don't rely on ScaleTrains couplers to hold a long train together when going up a grade. As always, you'll want to replace most factory couplers with Kadees.

    At 20:24 and 21:38, it sounds like a distortion canceling the sound out the prime mover. If you want to, buy the sugar cube speaker, these stock speakers from what I have notice tend to be the issue. I hear that sugar cube speakers and scale sound speakers are the best.

    I just received my CSX Tier 4 last week. I took it out of the box and noticed a little grill in between the box plastic. I set it aside and had to look all over the thing to find out where it came from. It looks like it had popped out of the same spot as yours did. There's two tabs that are supposed to hold it in place under spring tension. I stuck mine back in. It stayed, but it's not too tight. Will probably have to glue it. Mines a DCC ready version because I'm going to install a Railpro LM-3S in it with my own speaker. I'll be interested to see if there's a light issue on mine as well. Thanks for the review.

    You have the LOK programmer, you can adjust the lighting intensity there to your liking. That static sound, sounds like the exhaust, you can also adjust this sound independently in the LOK programmer, what I suggest is turning your main volume down first. Is it possible that grill popped off when you removed the shell?

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there will be some major program changes. I'm not sure about the grill, I didn't find it anywhere. I see someone else had the same issue, but his was laying in the box.

    • @ProfessorGrimm
      @ProfessorGrimm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOK sound in my opinion is better about distinguishing sounds in one channel which at the same time can make it seem overwhelmed.

  • @losi5ivet29cc
    @losi5ivet29cc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My CN version has the same Garbled sound throughout the notching. I don't like it either but it does kinda grow on ya after a while especially in a consist. I don't have a lok programmer yet but plan on getting one. I just put a new V4.0 in my Athearn RTR SD40-2 that I detailed and I can honestly say I like the motor control and the drive hold feature of the Lok decoders I feel I have more control over my locomotives vs the other decoders in my other locomtives. So I will be converting the rest of my fleet to lok sound but that's just my personal preference. Let's hope lok sound comes out with an improved sound version for this new Tier 4? :)

    Maybe the legendary carpet monster took that bit of grill for its own when you took the shell off Mr DG !! Thanks , Ive now seen this Scale Trains model in two liveries and two reviews now. This model is nice and ordinarily would take the tape . But lets just say "a competitor " has been at "mountain altitude training" and has buzzed down the finishing straight !!

      ~Deryk

    • @RailFanRick
      @RailFanRick 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like both of them but i can't compare them to Intermountains because i haven't purchased there version. I have 2 of the past release ES44's Intermountain made and they sucked but i know they really stepped up the game on these Tier 4 models. I have a Museum Quality Big blow Turbine, 4 different SD40-2's, Water Tenders, a few Crude oil Tank Cars and a Kit Classics Boxcar all from ScaleTrains and i absolutely love them! These 2 Tier 4 loco are the first purchases I've made from ScaleTrains that i have a found a few issues that are a little disturbing but i can live with them and make adjustments myself. The sound file is like yours and low volume, lighting is definitely to dim which i think i can adjust with lokprogrammer and a few small paint issues. I think the quality control dropped on the release of these compared to there past models, ScaleTrains definitely needs to catch this pronto before it hurts there rep which so far has started on a really good foot.

    I've run these kind of locos. 1:1 scale lol. All GE's have a pretty horrible way of not being able to tell when you "grab a notch" in sound. It's hard to tell unlike the EMD's. But even with that, I do agree these sound very choppy in their sound. Hope it helps.

    I bought the six CSX roadnumbers when they came out. I test ran some of them, the sound on them did not sound right to me at all. One was missing a grille piece, another had a grille piece pop out, and a third unit had a cracked step. I sent them all back and got a refund. Probably won't buy from ScaleTrains again.

    What FPS value are you delivering the videos at? The framerate seems to be the cause for jerky slow motion. I've seen this thing creep in real life and it definitely doesn't surge like that video opener.

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timpraetor if I mention in the video about jerkiness, it's while I'm looking at the locomotive, not while looking through the camera.

    • @RocktCityTim
      @RocktCityTim 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was referring to the actual video. When things get transcoded, we often see a 23.97 FPS conversion. By foring a 29.97 / 30 FPS transcode, things end up much smoother.

  • @christopherbrown5338
    @christopherbrown5338 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    LEDs are not nearly as good with flashing effects as bulbs. At notch one it seems to be jerky instead of running smooth. Your headlight & missing grill is a horrible job on QC's part. Not a fan of Loksound, wish they put Tsunami 2 in them. Does it double bell if you have the bell on and use the air horn? I prefer the real chain like some of my older Atlas models had and yes it sucks to have to remove the shell but I only had to do it once. And what's the deal with the glue? It's a common issue on their units, are they using a bulky hot glue gun especially where the main body meets the walkway's. The Tsunami 2 notch transition is very smooth sounding and when you turn the bell off it has a realistic sustain to it instead of cutting off sharp.

    Weight of the loco is good...bearing caps look good but do roll properly. Parts dont appear strong and as per video they are loose and breaking. Alternate lights are not appearing noticable. There is something wrong with the sound on notch up. Is scale trains models worth buying. Please advise.

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scaletrains makes some really great models. With all the extra details and parts that manufacturers are installing on these models you run the risk of having loose or missing parts. Every manufacturer has this problem. The highly detailed models look fantastic, but there is also the risk involved with that. Scaletrains has great customer service though, and they will take care of any issues that might arise. As for the sound when notching up, that was a custom sound file that was created for Scaletrains locomotives. It is supposed to be an accurate sound, but I agree with you, I don't like it. If you have any knowledge with the ESU Lokprogrammer, you can reprogram the decoder with a different sound file from ESU. I did that, and it sounds much better.

    I love my scale trains tier 4 engine. I actually have the sister of your 3610 I have 3611 I got mine back in March of this month and last night I decided to run it just to see what it would do put it on the track let it start up started out fine. Went to takeoff and it shut off and it would not cut back on. Someone told me that I needed a different track and different controller to start it up. He’s had the same issue I did, and he said his started out fine after that if you could tell me what I did wrong I would greatly appreciate it. If I can’t figure out the problem I have to send it back to get see what’s wrong hopefully what that gentleman had told me is hopefully the problem. Thanks in advance. Let me know please

    FWIW, I sprung for a Scale Trains BNSF model after having purchased an Intermountain NS unit. Very disappointed in the ST run. The speakers in my unit are defective. Worst sounding locomotive I ever purchased. My roller bearing caps are installed off-center so they wobble. Windshield window glazing pretty bad as evidenced on this video. No window tint to speak of... too light. Paint & details good, but grills appear to be over-sized to allow for show through screens??
    The BNSF paint color and printing is really good. Did I mention glue globs on BOTH sides of my unit? Lighting is not what I expected. Light bleed on my unit just as in this review. The IM unit does have independently controlled number board lighting and their walkway lights (fore & aft) are pretty cool. The ditch light housings, while prototypical just looks too big and chunky too me.
    Overall, a below average model for all the hype and the $. To me, my ST GEvo just looks like it was rushed through production. My Scale Trains SRR & NS SD40-2's had some of these issues (like with glue, sanding lines, lighting to some extent, and even a cab-to-body glitch on the SRR units), but overall I could handle that with the collective appearance & performance of the locomotives.

      Yeah my 2 N scale Tier 4's Sound the same. I've been on many of the prototypes. I can say they really dont sound like that when you notch them up. I think it's the speaker/ sound file. I love the engine but don't care for the sound. But the horn and bell sound is dead on. The ditch lights prototypicaly should flash for 30 seconds.
