Should You Move To Canada During The Cost Of Living Crisis? | Rent, Transport + Groceries

  • After being abroad for most of the year, I was SHOCKED when I returned back to Canada and saw just how much prices have rose since I was gone. Real Estate is obviously the worst culprit in the cost of living crisis, but regular expenses like transport, groceries, going out to eat, have all increased substantially in the last couple of years. While Canada's immigration numbers have definitely increased and the countries population is now at 40 million, there is a large group of new immigrants who have chosen not to stay and either return to their home countries or another destination instead. A large reason to this has been the high cost of living, as well as a lack of high paying jobs. So if you are thinking of immigrating to Canada any time soon, I hope you will find this video helpful in going over what might be the best province for you to live in, as well as what you can expect as the average monthly expenses.

    Unfortunately, it was the Canadian dream that destroyed my financial situation and my health at the same time. I had to accept jobs that I would not have accepted in my country, just because I hoped that after obtaining permanent residency my life would be easier. Unfortunately, it was not like that. But as for any other strong desire, I didn't want to give up easily. I sold the apartment I had in my country, in order to have enough money in Canada... believing that I will find a good job and that my financial situation will be stable. Unfortunately, I made the biggest mistake...I lost my home because of an irrational dream. Life is very expensive in Canada, rent eats up most of your money. The working conditions are at the level of those in Europe, 20 years ago. I had a job where I couldn't even go to the bathroom because it was a lot of work and the breaks were too short. As an employee, you have very few rights in Canada... you can be fired anytime and anyway. Vacation leave is just a joke. How could an immigrant who misses family and friends manage with 10 days a year? Considering that just to fly to Europe you need 2 days. In addition, salaries are very low (except for some professions). I tried several provinces, hoping that it is better in other places, unfortunately there are problems everywhere. I lived in NB, ON and AB...probably NB would be the place where I would live again. Then there is the problem of drugs and homeless people...many areas have proven to be unsafe. In Europe, I didn't really have this feeling wherever I went. Another problem is public transport, a nightmare for any person used to using public transport in Europe. Yes, Canada is not bad in every way. I miss the wide spaces, the beautiful nature, the ocean, some people (especially the elderly), the lack of bureaucracy, business opportunities (if you have the money to start one), Costco, etc. But unfortunately it has become very difficult to survive as an immigrant there (if you don't come from rich families that can support you financially). After all my money was gone (especially the rent in Toronto, $2000 per month) I had to return to Europe. I'm not sorry that I had this experience, and I would like to live in Canada, if life were cheaper...I'm only sorry that I lost my beautiful apartment.

      @@AlinaMcleod Thank you! Canada really was a big dream for me, and after a few visa refusals for stupid reasons (like you applied online and you had to apply on paper, this after even their customer support said I can apply online) I tried my best to live there. Unfortunately, I did not expect it to be so difficult to have your work experience outside of Canada or your studies in other countries recognized. Basically you have to start from scratch with everything. I will not understand why Canada wants so many immigrants but cannot offer them good jobs and a decent living.

      @florinRS11 because Canada wants lifesavings of new immigrants, wants them to take mineal jobs which Canadian-born people don't take like those ones at Tim Hortons. Plus, immigrants normally vote liberal, so this ponzi scheme could further exist.

I could be wrong, but I have a very strong feeling that there is a lot of propaganda involved with the “Canadian dream”… anyways… I also had a wonderful time in Canada, I do not regret any single step I took, but I am now also leaving for the same issue you faced. I came to Canada from France with a working holiday visa. I am fully bilingual (even trilingual), but life here is not what I was expecting when I made my baby steps in Canada. I have gone through a lot of expensive milestones to get my permanent residency, but I do regret a lot since I have spent a lot of money instead of focusing on my own priorities. However, it was an eye-opening experience to discover what my priorities are. I feel miserable here since all I do is work, pay my rent, groceries and taxes. I do not have any energy or money for hobbies and meeting new people. Loneliness and being far from family doesn't help. I think about going back to France and not coming back (or only if I realize it's definetly worse back home). It's always hard to choose between two evils. I truly understand that Canada needs young skilled workers to help their economy, but in my opinion, the human aspect was destroyed by the pandemic. Homelessness, the opioid crisis, rents and the high cost of living are just real major problems for the normal individual and immigrant. Also, everything costs a lot when you want to travel compared to Europe. You basically need to have a car to try to have fun around cities like Ottawa. It's really hard for newcomers to be part of Canada since every community only stick by themselves. The loneliness, the lack of true friendships, the distance with family will make me go back to France even though France has its own problems. It's not necessarily better, but when it comes to spend time with childhood friends and family, it's a no brainer for me. It's hard to choose betwen two evils, but personal priorities just matter a lot for a life choice like this. Immigration is not a joke and can be soul-crushing. I really miss my family, childhood friends and good food. It's awful to be isolated for an extended period of time when your only social interaction is the cashier at the grocery store.

    Everything Alina is saying in this video is factual. It's much harder for new immigrants to get established in Canada than it was, say, 20-30 years ago. My grandparents, who were in the late 50s, came here in 1990 with very little money, and six years later they already bought a house. That would be nearly impossible nowadays. I'll also add that in the 80s and 90s were the golden age to make cash money, it's when labour cost has not sky rocket like crazy and able to pay cheap labour to staff. Also the time when credit cards and e-commerce has not taking over yet. Immigrants and refugees coming here now in the 2020s and forward doing UberEATS, amazon, instacart. I mean seriously good luck to them. The Chinese were kings at making cash in restaurants and businesses and a lot of them have very low pensions due to these type of jobs back then. But aleast they have a house to live in. Sorry but in Canada, if you not prepared to lose your career back home and start over, don't bother coming here. It's literally rigged. All the rich Chinese and indians right now are also buying all franchises, commercial real estate, investing in housing cause back home, that's all they did, also in Chinese/asian culture we work faster and also try to save every penny. Car dealerships that are owned by white people will hire mandarin speakers cause they can make a quick sales to Chinese people with money

    Thanks for sharing this video that it’s a real witness of the situation that is happening in Canada currently. I had this dream to expatriate there since 2018 but for personal reasons and COVID period we had to postpone it till this year. Coming from Paris, I believe that is a very expensive city among the largest capitals in the world, but arriving in Montreal I was shocked how prices are high! the rent for 1 bed room in a decent place is around 1700$/month and grocery is away expensive… we spent a lot of money to move there and we could stand only 3 weeks we couldn’t see a better future and lifestyle standing as we expected so we just move back .fortunately we didn’t take the risk to sell our house here we were very careful to not being too risky at that level! I’m sure that the nature in Canada is stunning the few things I noticed that is not too crowded and it has large spaces but it isn’t enough to retain you… we’re taking about settling down and building a new life. So the outcome of the investment wasn’t positive for us. Besides the cost of living, the safety and poverty is an issue as well coz of homeless people and drug-addict too. Even in the capital OTTAWA they were everywhere 😮 as for the education, actually there are a lot teachers vacancies for primary schools and they can’t assure a place for new comers ! so you need to ask for a private school if you don’t apply at the right time for registration ( at the beginning of each school year). I’m disappointed regarding my journey but happy to be back home. Europe has a lot to offer besides some problems you have a smooth lifestyle. Just to mention Spain for me is the best place to be /to live for the quality of living that offers just you need to find a good job well paid to enjoy it fully. Good luck for new comers! Maybe it’s gonna change in the near future but nowadays no need to motivate and attract new immigrants if you don’t offer good conditions to make them stable in a new country.

    I applied for permanent residency in Canada during COVID times back in 2020, and was looking forward initially to moving to Canada to pursue a graduate degree in clinical psychology in UBC or somewhere like U of T. However, the PR application didn't pan out, and at the back of my mind, while being placed on this backburner, I was wondering if it was not a blessing in disguise......Many Canadians, whether of English Canadian or Asian Canadian extraction, keep on telling me that the costs of living have skyrocketed to the point of being unrecognisable from the time I was a graduate student there from 2006-2010, and even in 2013, when I made a short visit to Vancouver for a week, it wasn't so bad. Covid and many other things have basically thrown the cost of living crisis out of skelter and I don't know if I could survive just one month away from family in Canada.

    • @thursmornsunlight
      @thursmornsunlight 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@manitbaacy3413 I don’t know actually. From my view, immigrants have it pretty hard especially if you are Asian decent. You mentioned you are coming from Africa. You can apply for skilled labour immigration. I think that’s the best. As Canada’s work force is lacking in these areas. You will be appreciated a lot more and be paid well to do your job. I know some countries may have tribal issues in Africa and people may choose to come to Canada as refugees. I would say the paper work will take a long time and there are pros and cons this way. Once you are processed, as a minority of war torn or political issues you will stand out. And get employed easier. However when it comes to most refugees it’s the cultural differences and lack of food and community. If you know anyone in Canada that has an opportunity for you and is willing to sponsor you, go for it. However don’t go for big cities if you don’t have to. Expenses here are insane. If you have a good job in Africa, I don’t see leaving would be a good idea. Remember this, in Canada right now basic food and housing is the highest expense. Most people live in rooms. You may have higher pay here but you most likely won’t have any spare money. I do not wish for you to experience the same thing. A lot of immigrants are leaving. But housing has not gone done in price. That’s all I can recommend.

    My view is inflation experienced since 2020 (likely before as well) has nothing to do with supply/demand and is all manufactured. Primarily by regulated controls that get enforced upon everything. Australia is similar to Canada and likely even more expensive. The motivation is for finding places that offer a more simplified way of living that do not rely upon high powered professions to pay for these manufactured cost grabs by Corporations and Government. You have been to a few of these places like Bulgaria, Russia, Greece. South Africa is also cheap but may pose danger for foreigners.

    The Housing Crisis is becoming more and more of a deepening Social, Economic, Political, and Security Crisis for Canada.
    Asset Bubbles created by the Bank of Canada over the past 20 years are bursting and turning into a National Crisis with ;
    - Runaway Inflation
    - Record Level Household Debt ($2.32 Trillion)
    - Record Level High Real Estate Prices
    - High Cost of Living
    - And the Surging Cost of Rents, Food, Fuel, Goods, Services, and Taxes.
    The TRUE Inflation rate in Canada is over 15%, the main reason the cost of living is not dropping anytime soon.
    50% to 75% Assets DEFLATION in Canada is long overdue and is a MUST, if not, there will be Serious and Devastating Impacts for the middle class for years to come.
    Given these circumstances, Canada needs DEFLATION and not Inflation at the moment.
    The rate hike must continue in order to DEFLATE the asset bubbles.
    The Bank of Canada has deceived and misled the country and people into this deep mess with NO END in sight in the near future.

    This video demonstrates, it is not always necessary to take great pains to do a very informative video.
    You also could do this format for travel contents. Sit down explanations paired with clips token of the subjects.

    As a resident of MTL but originally from Quebec city, I can easily say that average rents and home values are not representative of the current status. Homes in the core of the city are +1m$ this overvalue, increase the average as they only represent 25% of the total. 30 min from the city centre are on avg 450k but 1hr away they drop significantly to 300k.
    My home town (QC city) the prices are quite similar (excluding the older quarters of the city) to those found east of Ottawa (Casselman, st-isodore and such) at 350k and that's within a 20-40 min distance from the city centre😅

    Tbh the only city worth living in here is Montreal. It’s affordable, it’s fun, it’s safe, it’s walkable and convenient, it has a perfect city/nature blend, and it’s still very cosmopolitan too. With that said, living in Montreal is best if you’re either self employed, a digital business owner, or employed with a Toronto salary otherwise salaries are lower, taxes are higher, and you would need to learn French.
    Toronto/Vancouver are the biggest offenders in this countries’ cost of living, Ottawa is too boring imo, Quebec City is a bit too French (in the nicest way possible lol), and the Prairies I don’t think I’d enjoy living in for whatever reason.
