One of my favourite movies of all time. I've watched this so many times I've lost count. Doreen you were excellent! All the actors were great and I can't believe how critics put this film down. Absolute masterpiece. Also note that Tian Mi Mi at the ending credits also sung the same song in Rush Hour 2 that had John Lone acting as Ricky Tan. Mickey and John were awesome.
According to IMDb, in the gunfights, including and especially this scene, they didn't have the budget to hire actors, so they instead hired Chinese street kids as extras. The actors with speaking roles had to be safety trained how to fire a gun (union rules), but these two girls knew all about guns, as did the guys in earlier scenes. Also, since the Chinese thugs had very little dialogue, they didn't have to be paid union scale -- although the girl lying on the pavement with two bullet holes in her has some choice words to say. And since they were not SAG union members, they didn't have to follow the rules for dangerous stunts, like bumping into moving taxis. In the full credits, the girl's name is revealed to be Doreen Chan, who plays the character "Red Hair." Here's to you, Doreen.
Year of the Dragon is such an underrated crime drama. This clip reminds me of the part in Robocop (1987) where Murphy has just gone to his old home and had flashbacks of the life and family he can never reclaim. In tranquil fury, he tracks one of his killers to a nightclub. He finds the scum dancing and celebrating his life of debauchery, the victims of him and his gang meaningless to him. The contrast between the 2 characters was similar to Stanley White and Joey Tai in this scene. Joey celebrates his life of crime, and Stanley is left with a trail of dead innocents.
Isn`t it strange or? I just finisht watching Year Of The Dragon last night for the ...maybe 14th time, and hell yeah, i believe it`s his best movie so far. Now tonight i`ll get a taste of The Pope Of Greenwich Village, and after that "masterpiece", Desperate Hours...and at last White Sands. Great roles, i mean main characters. That was Rourke how he supposed to play. Besides, they should give him an oscar for the talent he had for Year of the Dragon, a fast and brutal thriller from Cimino.
The subtle blend of humor when he throws him in the bathroom; trying to corner him in a stall but one after another is filled with people blasting coke.
This movie here was one of the more intelligent action movies to come out of the 80's. A great mix of violence, profanity, and racial slurs that many movies of that era contained but a smarter script binding those said elements together. Loved this movie from start to finish. End of Story.
I Was on stage wit other dancers, however the scene doesnt show us, u just see part of our chiffon scarves we used. If the camera would have pointed up, we would have been featured in the club scene.
@@CarmenGarcia-lu5cr Are you on the credit film? Maybey you could sheck. You coul be pride even if you have in the background because it is a really good movie.
In the beginning part of the video, it is showing what would become the site of the future East Broadway Mall. Now I am looking at this clip and the spot that would become The East Broadway Mall was an empty lot and there was a very large brick structure holding it up. It makes me how they even managed to even build the mall and take off the structure without the bridge dangling down.
This movie should have had won 7 or 8 golden awards! Everyone one hates an honest cop or a wonderful judge! They do exist! The script writer and director did NOT have a wild imagination! Just a movie but very realistic about gangs of N.Y.! The shoot out between the tough Chinese girls were the best parts where Capt White found out they were devoted to the Asian Mafia king the Chinese female was really a strong will fighter and feared NO one - what a real woman ! And told Capt White to to go "F' himself before she died! She was and is One of Kind Unlike most women who are Friget and full of feat - she was not!! Great film and underrated ! To me one of the best ever!! Never BORING! The Chinese female reportet and Stanley Capt had a inbalanced love affair but they managed to somehow love one another! So wonderful , and Capt White kiss his wife good bye at her funeral! Dam this movie never missed anything!!!!
I don't understand , why was this movie not up for the best awards! And these China Town girls were really loyal to their godfather Mafia king. That girl in the silver jump skirt was really a tiger! She feared NO one! Her role in this part was impressive! Capt White busted her , just could NOT break the Code of her ❤️!
there was a big uproar about this film with the Asian community in New York especially. too controversial for any awards. and Cimmino was still on the shit list with Hollywood for heavens gate.
@@phelpsmarc Bruce was doing well in the TV business in the late 80s, and thereafter becoming one of the best action superstars, compared to a more underrated Mickey. At least Mickey has an Oscar nominee, but he's just unrecognizable unlike Bruce, who despite having a shitty reputation for making these crappy b-tier action flicks, it's still Bruce Willis. Mickey doesn't even look like himself.
You must be as crazy as me. I was born in the 60's and some of the early 80's and 90's cops films(Black Rain, The Q & A) were better than the Godfather in my opinion, but Hollywood maligned the films because of political correctness. Hollywood also hates to see real masculine white men on screen, but they love young, girly looking or goofy Jewish men who look so weak. I loved Rourke in this film. I have seen a good share of his films and I don't think he has come close to this role.
Whats the story with the guy in the pink shirt grabbing Rourke during the club bit and then disappearing a second later? I'm guessing they were doing some guerrilla film making and he was a real bouncer thinking Rourke was up to something and he intervened? Looked like a "real" moment.
Wikipedia:White was born Stanisław Luszinski to a Polish-American Catholic family in Brooklyn, New York City. He later changed his name. He often uses the derogatory term "Polack" and is sometimes called that himself. Nothing about him being Jewish, but if he was the same man, it would not matter to me.
I can not disagree with you, you are right, and i don`t think any of the downey jr, or the likes could do a good Stanley White. I never even thought about it. It has to be someone like the real Stanley White...a rough jewish/irish cop, but i can`t think of anyone right now, i just see Rourke`s face under the hat. and, a cameo, why not. But i don`t think any of the major studios is ready for a remake. But, IF they do a remake of Year Of...., i really have to think about it who plays White.
You probably wont agree..and I can't blame you for not agreeing..but I could go for a remake! Yes, I know, there is no one in Hollywood today of Rourke's talent, but they could let Mickey "hand pick" someone he thought could do the role. Someone of any race. I'm black and I don't think Stanley White has to be... uh...well white :). Mickey could do a cameo. If he's gotta be white, so long as Hollywood doesn't pick a weak white or Jewish guy. So sick of that runt Robert Downey, Jr. and the likes.
I could too, but as my memory serves me correctly even back then there were protests about the film. I'm laughing to myself that 95% of this film would be changed today if there were even a thought of a remake.
That`s not what i mean, even if he wàs jewish/ irish/ black/red, and then so. I knew he was polish. But, my statement was that who could bè a rough cop like him. I can`t see anyone else playing Stanley White as Mickey Rourke, so i was just thinking.
I meant that Chinese female who died after her shoot out with Capt White had NO fear! Most women are too sensitive - this is why they have a hard time deciding what to do in life! She was devoted to her Mafia king. I am not saying its right, I am speaking how she was dedicated to a man she served.. to have a wife like that willing to die for her husband is a true blue ❤️!
Just watched the movie for the first time. Really damn good. Mickey and John Lone really nailed it.

My ass. Most of the fashion would never be worn. Same as most movies.
TRUE INDEED.
This movie was intense all throughout. I like that it kept one in suspense. I was hooked after that.
One hell of a flick.
Rourke`s best in my opinion.
RIP Michael Cimino .
One of the best scenes in the film. The song playing in the club is "C.O.D. - Uphill (Peace Of Mind)" produced by Raul Rodriguez.
