I totally agree. This is one of the best movies n the 80's. This movie should have been nominated for picture of the year in Oscar. Well, Chinese American movie has never been looked up in this country.
I saw it on the big screen. Flawed film, but Compelling in an Old Hollywood way, and politically incorrect in a sincere way. The last of the old Mickey Rourke swagger. This scene was my favorite by far! I like movies about dirty cops, but this was a clean cop movie with serious intent.
Went to the theater to watch this and was hooked on Mickey's acting since then. A shame his career started taking a dive after that. But he did quite well many years later as The Wrestler.
Lol, unfortunately, i don´t know what you´re talking about. After Year of the Dragon in 1985, Rourke had Angel Heart, Francesco, Johnny Handsome, A Prayer for the Dying, Homeboy, a great hit with 9 and a half Weeks and probably his best perfomance as an actor in Barfly.
Yeah it’s gotta be the biggest waste of talent ever. He should be the greatest American actor of all time but he insists on turning down perfect parts like Pulp Fiction, Platoon, the Untouchables, Rain Man and accepting utter bullshit straight to dvd movies plus getting ridiculous plastic surgery and insisting his dog appears in every scene...
0:12 = Victor Wong (Harry Yung; "Egg Shen" in John Carpenter's "Big Trouble in Little China"; with Kurt Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Catrall, James Hong, James Lew. In "Big Trouble," it took place in San Francisco's Chinatown area; for this "Year of The Dragon" film, it was based in New York's Chinatown...)
I live in an area with many Koreans. What White says here rings true. He's saying you are in the US, not your home country. You have to abide by the laws of the US like everyone else. Also, you should integrate, not isolate yourselves.
Hello Mogh, my name is Eric Ryder! I really enjoyed the movie "Year of the Dragon". I though Mickey Rourke pulled off this role quite flawlessly. His flawed ways were quite convincing and he was very effective as a not so likable character. This was Rourke at his finest. John Lone was also convincing as the kingpin of the evil Triad and a formidable adversary to Rourke. It was a shame that this movie was boycotted by the PC audience at the time, but what ethnic denomination was never slandered by Hollywood? The only flaw was the performance by Ariane; she was truly awful. But her bad performance didn't lower my spirits. Come to my channel. I have a review on the movie "Year of the Dragon". Please share your thoughts with me okay? Thank you so much.
I actually thought Ariane was uneven, not truly bad. Her first scenes, yes, she was bad - the scenes covering the funeral of Jackie Wong. However, she was good in most scenes. She was actually very good in the Restaurant Scene, and especially, the post rape scene where she gets emotional, and let's White have it verbally.
People who didn’t grow up with Chinese Americans/immigrants or proximate to SF and/or NYC Chinatowns in the 70’s & 80’s can’t possibly appreciate how well the cultural and set details were done in this film. This would include to some extent the Tracy Tzu character, an amalgamation of East Asian female TV field reporters and anchors from this era. It was a BIG thing. It made White America feel they were evolving- but not uncomfortably fast.
One of my favorite movies of 1985 and one of my favorite tough guy actors Mickey Roarke of that time.....just don’t understand what made him walk away from acting especially when he was on top of his game and decided to go into professional boxing....such a waste of talent!!!
Well like Brando he hated the craft and the politics. His 1st love was boxing but he wasnt very good. Got broke. Did all those stupid surgeries. Lost the love of his life. Was without food and home. Then he had no choice but to return. All geniuses are flawed. Mickey is among them.
This movie would have been Rated R if it was made today. Mickey Rourke carries this movie with a bad script and dialogue and horrible hair coloring. He still finds a way to command this movie!
thanks god that i am born a dragon .not only i was born as a dragon i am a Easter bunny dragon .My father is a dragon same with my granddad was also a dragon . according to the Chinese calender and i have green eyes with my David lo pan's accent . peace to all it's all good 100% .
Compared to Cimino's last film (the epic flop Heaven's Gate) this film is interesting, but still bordering towards bad. Mickey Rourke does his best with a pretty lame and cliché ridden script. The stereotypes are quite offensive too.
Any time John Lone speaks, is the best part of the movie.
it's Stanley
My dad took me to see this when I was a kid. We both loved it. Good stuff
RIP Michael Cimino..this movie it's so underrated

This is a very good movie and YES far too underrated indeed!!!!!!!!
However there is an antiChina plot in this play It is not recognized by most Chinese
saw this in 85 I was 17.. such a great movie
I love, love, love "Year of the Dragon." This film deserves a Criterion release!

Cracking film!
The best actor that ever lived Marlon Brando liked Rourke´s performance in Year of the Dragon. So, nothing more to say.
Wow. That's awesome. Can u give me a link please? Love em both.
I love Brando but don't forget Lawrence Oliver and Humphrey Bogart.
@@bull419 I love peter OToole and Paul Scofield much more than Olivier.

I know he's done Barfly, 9.5 weeks, Angelheart, Rumblefish, the Wrestler. For me, his # 1 film now and forever will be Year of the Dragon.
2:03 is a great shot...Rourke adjusting his chair, the shifting of his attention, the start of the mutual loathing.

great film.
This is a great fucking film.
Rourke at his peak. He and Cimino were a great pair. Unfortunately they're both pretty much off the grid.
Specially because Cimino has died. Two years ago.
They should have done another movie together before Cimino’s death. I guess he was blacklisted in Hollywood...
Cimino blew himself off hard with Heavens Gate and I don’t think it’s that bad.

With all the respect, foreigners should obey the laws and customs and integrate in every country EXCEPT America, cause that is what America made by.
