      Have you ever read ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ by Viktor E. Frankl. A truly gripping account about a psychologist surviving the holocaust. Really puts to question life’s meaning and how psychological states are influenced by extreme circumstances. Would recommend as judging by the books given this sounds like something you may enjoy

    Have you read meditations by Marcus Arelius? You are quite philosophical so I think you'd enjoy. The way it's put together is beautiful. It's like a book of reflective poetry. Only book I ever say "changed" my life for the better.

    The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favourite novels and yes it’s Oscar Wilde’s only novel! Lord Henry is an exceptional character, he made me contemplate things in a totally different way! He has some ‘dangerous’ ideas you could say! He’s a total hedonist. I read Dorian Gray at the same time I was reading Aristotle and Plato at uni, quite paradoxical view points from them! Plato and Aristotle basically discourage hedonism. They talk about the soul as being split into different parts, and that one must be rational at all times and avoid giving into the ‘appetitive’ (basically pleasure of many kinds). The problem is that Henry makes a pretty rational case for hedonism. I mainly read classics, I don’t think it’s pretentious to read them unless your intention is to elevate your status by reading them! I read them because they stand out in history, they are deemed to have great value by many academics and literary critics that have read them generation after generation! Most contemporary books just don’t have the depth that many classics do. I would recommend Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It’s an epic story. Also the original Dracula by Bram Stoker is a brilliant book as well. Anyway, thanks for the vid mate.

    Would be interested to see a reflection on the Joey D 2014-2017 era. I get that change is inevitable but I definitely feel that there was an an aim to portray a certain image back then. I prefer the Joe we’ve seen the last few years, and what I feel is more the ‘real’ you. Don’t mean this offensively at all, always been a big fan.

    • @JoeDelaneyy
      @JoeDelaneyy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I understand where you're coming from but still disagree somewhat. If I was trying to be anyone back then, it wasn't consciously. I am different now, but I think it was always the 'real' me at the time.

    • @kieranamin1
      @kieranamin1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Delaney. Yeah that’s true, and listen, I really didn’t mean any offence by that question. I’m someone who’s walked the triangle in Liverpool essentially moulding myself into whatever I’d heard you talking about on TH-cam. Eventually I realised it just wasn’t me.
      I really respect the transition you’ve made, and I look at both you and Tommy B now and genuinely feel a sense of relief. You’re both now such more rounded role models that I look at now and get a much more real sense of aspiration. Genuinely think you’re a great TH-camr and it’s weird because I almost feel a sense pride that you’re doing well.
      I definitely haven’t explained myself well there, but hope you get my angle.
      Also I did deliberate on my comment loads after posting it and realise It’s strange I get to even comment on such things, this isn’t through judgement, more curiosity.

  • @CH-bp6mc

    A short history of everything is class!
    I see myself as a bit of reading a lot of nonfiction really. If I had to recommend some. It would be.
    1. Noam Chomsky: manufacturing consent
    2. The Secret Barrister: Stories of the law and how it's broken
    3. Dr. Frances Ryan: Crippled.
    4. Oliver Burroughs: Moneyland
    5. Akala: Natives
    6. Rutger Bregman: Utopia for realists
    These are books that changed or helped me form an opinion on something important. I think a lot of this book is really relevant to the current time. Especially in the top 3. I really need to make an effort to read more fiction tbh.

    A Short History is incredible. Read it and a few years later wanted to revisit so I did it in on Audible. 1. City of Thieves by David Benioff -best novel ever. If anyone disagrees reply and I’ll PayPal you $20. Author was GoT showrunner. Has nothing to do w dragons. 2. Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull (Pixar). So legit. 3. The Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker. Bill Gates favorite book. 4. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving (Only did Audible and loved it). 5. Confessions of Nat Turner by William Styron (Alt history on only ‘successful’ slave rebellion). I read and listen to the business and self-help genre. The problem is the fact that it’s usually 30 pages of content wrapped in 280 pages bc you can’t sell a 30 page book and tour and have hack Simon Sinek catch phrases that print money.

    Joey D, For the book Atlas Shrugged. I think the part you somewhat struggled (not saying he actually struggled just using his own words) to express was potentially connected to something known as Egoism (some people may know this I don't think i'm some pro philosopher) and its basically that as human beings we are all somewhat focused on our selves. Also, with egoism they believe that society could function through it being a "union of egoists". Not sure if this is what the writer implied, I have not read the book so I do not know. I just noticed some similarities in their ideologies.

    Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari is one you’ve probably read - some mind blowing stuff in there.
    Atomic Habits by James Clear I’d also recommend 👌🏻
    Gates of Fire by Steve Pressley which is all about the battle of the Spartans against the Persians

      Danny Ward good call. Sapiens is Top 5. Atomic Habits > all other habit books. Not close.

    Love reading history, even historical fiction. Check out 'The Last Kingdom' by Bernard Cornwell, essentially the formation of England is the main focus of the books. Although we live here, not many people know how England came about.

    Winston Churchills History of the English Speaking People. Im American, and they do not teach old British history in the states. It was eye opening, and hes also fantastic. Life changing for me.

    I think the first and probably most profound gem in this video is where Joey D talks about how overrated things are advertised to make them sell, including books.

    If you like science stuff, there’s What If by Randall Munroe. It’s not a narrative book, but a series of scientific explanations that are presented so ridiculously. It’s definitely not a serious read, but I enjoyed it immensely

    I'm mad for a self help book tbh, but Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl is a great read, think you'd like it. About a lad who survived the concentration camps. Mike would too I'd say, but he's probably read it already... You probably have too actually tbh. Anyway iya.

    Cheers for the recommendations. I think you are on point in taking gratitude from an awareness of the plight of others. I would recommend "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse; it's a pithy novel that is quite open to interpretation and that you may appreciate.

    Atlas Shrugged is a book I read in college. I loved it at the time and it really encouraged me to develop self-confidence and go after what I want in life in spite of others trying to put me down or use me for their own selfish purposes. However, it also has couched in it this philosophy of no empathy for anyone ever. I tried to follow that because that's what the book encouraged, and found my self consistently filled with rage and depression. One day someone said to me: "Maybe you're just not an unempathetic person. Maybe you actually care about people." I realized that part of the philosophy didn't work for me, in fact I think it's almost toxic. I can still go after what I want in life (taking the good part of that book) and also realize I do in fact care about people and embrace that. I found my depression and rage drifted away and my relationships improved. I say this because Rand is sort of a double edged sword. She's great at getting you to appreciate you're a unique individual worthy of self-respect and risk, but this other side to her philosophy I find to be destructive to the self. Our connections to others is what makes life worth living in this world and she tries so hard to reject everyone. I'm going to add another book to your list to read Joe and anyone else reading this. "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. It's a much shorter book than Atlas Shrugged and the philosophy found within those pages is so much more sustainable.
    As a side, another issue I found with Atlas Shrugged is it embraces this philosophy that rejects learning from people in the past in an effort to put forward pure individuality which to be honest is sort of short-sighted. If you try to build every industry from the ground up on your own then you're going to just waste a lot of time making mistakes that the sum knowledge of all humanity made before you. A famous musician said 'Learn everything inside and out first, then forget it entirely and make it your own.' That makes way more sense in my opinion.

      Empathy is a much needed trait. Without empathy, we would not be human.
