Solving global challenges with membrane technology | Building a sustainable future

💡 Membranes are excellent tools to help us in the transition to a more sustainable society. Environmental problems, like water pollution and scarcity of resources, can be tackled by membrane technology. Also the energy, carbon, and water/solvent intensity of industrial separation processes can be drastically lowered. In contrast to alternative unit operations, membrane technology consumes much less energy (up to 100 times!) and uses no extra chemicals. In that respect membrane technology can be one of the climate change solutions.
🔬 At the intersection of chemistry, materials science, engineering and biology, we focus in the KU Leuven Membrane Technology Group on designing membranes by tailoring their molecular structure and morphology to enable liquid and gas phase separations at molecular level for a variety processes that address current global challenges.
Membrane technology can be used for water treatment, wastewater treatment, co² capture, desalination of salt water, water filtration and much more. In short, membrane technology will help us building a sustainable future.
