  • Just a quick visual video on changing out the steering cable on this boat. We have a 2003 Bayliner 205 boat with an mercruiser 5.0.
Also if you're like me you struggle with boat cover supports. don't buy these pieces of crap online
Here's the link to the steering cable I purchased:

    Hello to you,
Thanks for your above video here it was helpful so far for me. I have a Mercruiser and the actuators are indeed similar. I am constantly overcompensating when I cruise at low speed.
It is stiff at times going right or left, I get tired just trying to keep if straight. I will look closer in the spring to see how hard it will be. Any comments would be great.
    Be safe

check your power steering fluid. I experienced the same thing with that boat too...I think it's just poor quality to be honest.

Hey thanks for posting! I have a mercruiser and our steering actuators are identical. I'm having a hard time removing the steering rod/piston from the actuator. I removed the large locking nut starboard side and the clevis/pin on port side. Am I missing anything else? I can't try the rod to come out. Seems stuck or I'm missing something obvious!?

it might just be pinched with the metal? spray some wd40 and pry that sucker out.

The large nut I see is attached to a housing with hoses, is it ok to remove nut without something leaking?

      i'd go with 15 foot. I found a guide online: www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/Teleflex/TMTechCat-MechStrg(v4_0)How_to_Measure_Steering_Cables.pdf

I bought based on length and type of cable needed. Look under your dash to see what you need for style of steering. My boat was a single cable, but dual cable systems exist. I bought a 16 foot cable from starmarinedepot.com product ID: TF1371-202

Why did you change your steering cable? My 2000 regal 1800LS just last night while out on the water, steering got really tight when turning left or right. In the middle going straight it was better but not great. I am constantly whipping tubers outside the wake so my steering cable has got to be taking a beating and I'm sure it has the stock cable in it. But it has to be my steering cable because nothing else would cause that kind of problem that I've researched or seen on my boat

changed the cable because there was just too much play in the steering. just to go in a straight line were always making adjustments...which usually lead to over correcting just to go straight. You should check your fluids as a first step, which is what I did before changing out my cable.

Next time please show a video of your work. By the way you do not have an 'Inboard", you have an 'Inboard/Outboard' or
more commonly referred to as an I/O.

Thanks Hank. I didn't think of grabbing the camera until after I was done with everything.
