Just pulled the cable out of my 2001 Boston Whaler 130 Sport. Part printed on jacket was found just as described (Teleflex SSC6211). Also checked it by measuring (9'6" jacket collar to collar only) and adding the 18", and that math also works out to 11'. Can now order with confidence. Perfect, and thank you for the instructions.

Just removed my cable and found the number on it. Can't wait to get home to use your math on it to see if it matches. Thanks

I bought a boat that didn't have a steering cable in it. How do I determine how long my cable should be?

At 3:08 is when it starts. The rest is gibberish. We're not here to learn about where it's written on the cable.

Okay, if you listen to this nonsense with the rotary cable you will end up getting 2ft too long. If the cable has 10 at the end of the number on the old steering cable, order a 10ft cable, do not add anything. If you have no cable and have to measure with a tape on the Boat measure from center of steering wheel to the outside of Boat then to the back of Boat then to the start of the Tilt Tube the steering cable will start in. If it reads 2ft + 7ft + 3ft it will be 12ft, no more or no less. I made the mistake of listening to this guy and ended up with 2ft too much. The correct measurement was 12ft, not 14ft.

You're absolutely right to use the numbers on the jacket of the cable to determine the length needed, and that is what we recommended in the video. If the numbers are not readable, the method & formula we provide for measuring the cable is what is recommended by the major manufacturers of marine steering cables (Dometic, Uflex, etc.). If the cable is not available for measurement, you would indeed measure the distance from helm to side of the boat, then to the back, and then to the tilt tube as you stated. We cover this approach in our follow-up video: th-cam.com/video/z5rNHws4BSQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LUZNYKbx-6jGLEQK

@@Marinepartssource He actually says to add 18 inches to the length. "Then round it off to the nearest ft" and that's what messed it all up. Listen to what he says between 2:45 - 3:15. Why would you add 2 more feet for a rotary?
