    I got to watch Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi for the first time with my stepdaughter last week. I’ve seen both a million times, but this was her first. Made me so sad that the originals have been lost on a generation. She was quite confused about Anakin’s force ghost appearance.
    It feels like they’re being erased from existence. Really sad to see all the work that people did for months just fade into obscurity and some of their credits removed from the film.
    I want generations now to see them. If nothing else, as an important piece of history or art that needs to be preserved. I guess maybe the hope for that to happen is gone. Just seems like we keep getting told a firm “No”

And it get‘s Harmy the attention he deserves.

    While this interview has brought me closure to longing for an official release of the unaltered cuts, the fact that the largest film company in the world can’t do the very simple thing that fans have worked through blood and tears for is depressing, to say the least.
    Do I hate the special editions? No! Not every change works, but I appreciate them and I don’t mind they’re canon. But the original cuts are THE films that are the heart of the franchise. They revolutionized and changed film forever, and are still a blast to watch today.

    And I don't wanna have to show my kids a bootlegged fan-edit as their first Star Wars if I could just buy it instead.
    I grew up with the Theatrical cuts, but also the Special Editions. I watched them interchangeably depending on which VHS I found first. So while I definitely value the Theatricals most, I feel the Specials are the "definitive" way to view the movies for newer audiences now, especially with PT ties and canon consistency.

  • @TheDude4077
    @TheDude4077 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think it's definitely a contractual thing that happened when Disney bought the franchise. The negatives being destroyed is highly implausible, and even if they were there's still 35mm prints out there that could be restored, or they could restore the 1995 laserdisc release (similar to the gout, but it would be better because the gout uses the inferior 1992 laserdisc release). The only possible answer is that George Lucas had it as a condition of the sale.

  • @TANMAC43

    The Blade Runner boxset has like 6 cuts of the movie including the rough cut. The new RoboCop boxset from Arrow has the Theatrical, DX, and the Network TV cut from MGM's archives. Why they still can't release these has to do with a deal George Lucas made.

  • @chryco4
    @chryco4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If I had to guess I think it is because the originals are just lost or damaged beyond repair. It'd be a weird contractual thing for them to not be allowed to release the original version, so maybe they view it as too much work to repair something not worth that much to them unfortunately. Besides, even if they were able to release a true original version people would still find ways to complain and view things like Harmy's cut to be superior and more true to the original. With this fandom it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing.

But besides that the 77,80, and 83 cut of the movies should be out there. Heck release a versions where you can pick and choose the changes you want. You know how much money I would and other would probably spend on picking and choosing what I want because there are some changes here and there I would keep but some I would toss in a moment. So to have the option would be amazing. But of course the 100% unaltered versions should not be so hard to get a hold of.

    The fans have made do with old film prints, DVDs, Laserdiscs, and BluRays, and restored them into the despecialized versions we have today, which are already very good. Even if we can't get a perfect 4K image pulled from the original negatives, Disney could just make their own despecialized versions and then release them officially. I'm sure with their money they could make an excellent looking film - it would just take more work than scanning the negatives. So I don't think that's much of an issue. It's probably either that it'd cost more than they think it'd be worth (since most people will just take whatever version they have available), or that there's some kind of agreement preventing them from doing it in any fashion.

  • @MrDestroyedSoulx

    This doesn't make me feel hopeful. Because if J.J Abrams can't get Disney to release the unaltered theatrical cuts, then who can? This is a man who's responsible for 2 thirds of the sequel trilogy. If he can't ask for it on our behalf, then who can? Maybe George really did destroy the negatives then. Because I'm not sure I'd believe they'd honor a handshake request. If it wasn't written in to a contract they wouldn't be obligated to do so, and considering how they mostly ignored George's advice for the sequels (I would argue largely a wise decision) they have no issue not doing things he wants if it's not in a contract. I think Disney probably would release them if they had a way to do so. Though I'm not really all that sure either.

    It was funny to hear the "You knows" in your monotone.
    That said, everyone does it, especially when they're dancing around a sort of sensitive topic. He's not allowed to say more, most likely, but, you know, it's kind of difficult because he does want those original versions, you know?
    They're called discourse markers. They make transcribing spoken dialogue absolute hell for anyone who's tried it.

    I don't want the theatrical cuts released on Blu-ray or 4K etc. so I can discard the Special Editions. I appreciate if the Special Editions are considered the definitive versions. But I want the theatrical cuts released so I too can still have the freedom of enjoying both versions released commercially in HD (not counting the Despecialized Editions). I've commented many times before, but there are things I prefer in the theatrical cuts and things I prefer in the Special Editions too. And I also like the prequel trilogy, the sequel trilogy (especially as I've just seen Rise of Skywalker) and the anthology movies too. But anyways, I have my copies of the theatrical cuts and happy to stick with them.

    Agreed, the original Star Trek series got released on Blu-ray allowing viewers the option to choose to watch the original versions or the remastered versions of the episodes. So it's just baffling they won't do the same with Star Wars.

    Maybe im wrong, but im pretty sure that when Disney bought LF, i heard people talking about how the original movies where, by contract, impossible to rerelease.
    I wonder if anyone else remembers people talking about that or i just made it up in my mind.

    George has put so much effort over the years in making the original versions unavailable for anyone that I'm certain we'll nver get them in a legal fashion. I'm sure his deal with Disney only includes the special butchered edtions. I will never thank Harmy enough for his outstanding work.
