Very informative ! As a drummer since about 40 years I know how emotions and the "vibrations" of a song can speed up and slow down the tempo - that's why I started playing the drums WITH a metronome on my headphone while playing with the band ... I simply was fed up hearing that it's me who changes the tempo. As a result the discussions stopped ... and we, as a band, really made a step forward. For me personally, as a drummer and ukulele player (still beginner since a year+), the metronome is an essential tool for practising ...
Interesting. I play with a metronome and treat it like my band member. It provides the beats and I provide the music around the beats. I'll mention one thing that is probably unique to me, but I'll mention it anyway. For me, the metronome has to be analog. It has to be a real thing smacking another real thing and making a real sound. Electronic simulacra don't do it for me. I need real percussion to feel it. It is almost like you can feel the analog beat in a way that the simulated computerized beat cannot replicate. Again, I know this is perhaps all in my head, but my head is an important factor in my music, so I indulge it.
