    I am embarassed to admit it, and this is to be appreciated, yet I am trying to understand what the objective is. Is it simply to hear the 2&4 in my head? Also, I think I'm getting a little hung up because I may be trying to relate it to the ands of the basic beat. any ideas on how to recalibrate my thinking for the expreess purpose of gettig this very basic and beneficial concept down? In your video, where you give the instruction to say 1 & 2 between the clicks of the metronome, I somehow am seeing that as the upbeats or ands?

    It is 2 beats per bar and YES, it is important! Even for just the "exercise" of it, you should be able to listen to a tune and snap you fingers only on the beats "2" and "4" of every bar of 4 beats.

    @jazzguitarlessonsnet Ok, got it! How about the subdivision on each beat? Do you recommend triplets with a swing pulse, or just straight eight notes?
    Thanks for your work, and sorry for so many questions!!

  • @jazzguitar
    @jazzguitar  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @StromboliKicks Yes, well, euhm... this could be the topic of an entire different video but it's good to work on both triplet subdivisions and straight-eight. I personally don't rely on the triplet to make things swing... (there's different degree's of swing and "3rd triplet" is good for textbooks but not always in real life!) but the triplet is also one of the building blocks. Practice everything! (-:

    Hi everybody. My guitar teacher showed me this years ago and it made practicing with the metronome SO much more fun and musical. The trick is to PERCIEVE the clicks on the 2 & 4 beats. You cannot set the metronome to do this. The metronome is a machine that clicks in perfect time. You have to adjust your brain to hear the clicks as the 2 & 4 of the beat. Once you hear it, you'll be hooked. Hope this is helpful.

  • @eddymoon3671
    @eddymoon3671 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you make a video of the first metronome´s beat being the first, second, third and forth beat? Thanx!

  • @ryanelian2310
    @ryanelian2310 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Marc, can you explain why/if the gap and the click is the opposite in the “up” and “down” vs all both the gap and the click in the “down”. It feels right when it’s the opposite..

    • @jazzguitar
      @jazzguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan -- I'm not sure I understand your question.
      To summarize: the bar of 4/4 contains four beats. The metronome is set to click on beat 2 and beat 4. That's the jist of it :)

  • @rachelsmename
    @rachelsmename 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you. This was very helpful because my piano teacher wants me to play my scales on beats 2 and 4 of the metronome and I could not understand how to do that. Now I do, thanks to you. Can you please tell me how to figure out beats 1 and 3? He wants me to do that too.

    hi, i have a question. the jazz players like barry harris , hal galper ect play beating the foot on 1 and 3. what do you Think?

    • @jazzguitar
      @jazzguitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Thanks for your comment. I have heard that as well, from high level jazz players - in the end I think it comes down to personal preference. However, if you're just starting to play jazz and are getting use to a standard swing feel, I would recommend putting the metronome on 2 & 4 because that imitates what a jazz drummer would do most of the time. Hope that helps!
      All the best,
      Marc

    I have to play on beats 2 and 4 playing scales on my piano in 16th notes. Can you explain how I can do this? How do I find beats 2 and 4?

  • @David2b51
    @David2b51 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have the metronome puted on 2beats for a bar or on a 4beats for a bar?..is it important?..

  • @StromboliKicks
    @StromboliKicks 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. The first time you said the 2 is on the up beat but when you do the 1-2-3-4, the 2 will fall on the beat? Or am I making confusion?

  • @obus4186
    @obus4186 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So does this mean that a phrase should start and end on beats 2 or 4? How do we use this knowledge?

    • @jazzguitar
      @jazzguitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily! Phrases can begin and end anywhere. Playing with the metronome on 2 & 4 allows you to play in between those beats with the swing feel. It is harder to feel the swing if the metronome accents every beat. Naturally in most 4/4 jazz tunes, the accent is on the backbeat (2 & 4) so this is much more like a real playing scenario. Hope that answers your question.

    • @obus4186
      @obus4186 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jazzguitar Ya, I've been tapping along with some tunes, emphasizing 2 at least for now - TWO three four one, TWO three four one. I think I got a sense of it. Hard to describe, kinda of like floating on the beat. I will try out the metronome next. I appreciate your advice, thank you.

    Hey dude ! Awesome channel with good lessons efforts ! I have a question: can i improvising in odd times like 3/4 5/4 and 7/4 thinking in strong time 2 and 4 ? how can i use and count these other possibilities to improvising in 3/4 or 5/4 or 7/4 with swing feel?
    I really thankfull for your attention ! ( sorry bad english anyaway )

    • @jazzguitar
      @jazzguitar  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      João Paulo B D Andrade There's several way to use the metronome in "non 4/4 time". My first pick would be to put it on ONE beat per bar (i.e. in 3/4, hear it as beat ONE only) ... but the metronome would have to be very slow for 7/4 to be at a reasonable tempo. Another thing that is easily heard is using the metronome on beat ONE and on exactly HALF of the measure of the odd time. For instance: in 3/4, hear it on beat ONE and on beat AND OF TWO. Hope this helps. :-)

      jazzguitarlessonsnet thak so much for explanation ! Could you demonstrante any examples play swing feel in 3/4 or 5/4. i will try play in 3/4 and 5/4 ... im believe if im play in these odd times swing feel, im will can play in any other odd times.
      Once again ,thanks dude ! .

    • @jazzguitar
      @jazzguitar  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      João Paulo B D Andrade Ahah ... yeah, swing is another thing. Especially when you have a click happening on an upbeat. (Just as a heads up, I will not record videos of me playing in 5/4 and 7/4 or 7/8 ... I'm just not 'tight' enough with that stuff yet. But I *may* shoot a video lesson for 3/4 eventually!)

    • @joaopaulobdandrade201

      jazzguitarlessonsnet hahaha ... yeah i can imagine how to difficult is play a swing feel in 5/4 or 7/8 but what you said , help me alot.. The way is dump me in 5/4 or 7/8 in time ONE in a half beat. heheh... I will whathing or video lesson in 3/4.
      thanks a lot !

    I've taught music for 50 years. The overwhelming majority of casual musicians are horrible at counting with any kind of regularity. You guys that wanna be - PLEASE take Marc's advice and practice FEELING the pulse.
    Here's two things that help some -
    1 - WALK while you're listening to the metronome and counting. Set the mm fast enough so that ONE foot falls on the click. If your gait is regular, your other foot should fall in between.
    2 - If you really feel you can't hear the "In-between beats", set the thing at TWICE the speed and tell it to TOCK BING or TICK TOCK. Then you'll actually hear the in between beat. As soon as you can, revert to half speed, TOCK TOCK only and relax. You'll feel that middle, silent beat.

      Craig Lumpy Lemke I took classical years ago and play more by feel. Whether piano or guitar.. I really liked your suggestions. I have a TH-cam piano site but I stay off swing . I do it naturally ..I have a hundred videos and they are not all winners.. I'm going to edit them and put annotations in them.. I can play with a metronome but I stay with simple ratios.. no 5/8.. I would be happy to just play accurate swing in 4/4. I don't know if there is a true swing that can be put down on paper. But again it is a weak point. Your help is welcome.. I need to hear the silent beats I'm going to try that out. pianostlyle100. Oh yes what is your background in music. I'm primarily a church musician and can be found on bass, guitar, organ, piano at any time. A lot of contemporary music has jazz roots, and follows the circle of fifths.

      Craig just read your comment. I'm going to try this today and try to hear that in between beat. Is that beat the accented and beat..I apologise for what may seem to be an ignorant question, but I can tell you know your material. Please and thanks. Printed material and PDFs would be helpful. Thank you for taking the time to write.

    I find this very easy to do until I bring the tempo up to about 140bpm and then I lose it completely... 130bmp - no problem, 140bpm - impossible! Any suggestions that might help with this?

    • @jazzguitar
      @jazzguitar  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Stirzaker Good question. Same here. We all have our "max tempos" ... the only suggestion: keep at it. Slowly push your max and make the un-comfortable become comfortable. It takes time. Another trick: go way above your max, then back down to your old max. Your perspective will change.
