An interesting thing to note with the Alpha Strike box is that the Primer and short story are set in 3151, after the ilClan sourcebook but before the upcoming one that details what's been happening on Terra since the fall of the Republic. So it's going to be our first glimpse of Alaric's new order. As much as I'm looking forward to getting my hands on more minis and the nice cardboard terrain, I'm very excited for that fiction!

Good to know! I have to admit, I've read nothing beyond the Clan Invasion so I know nothing about that era. But I shall learn!

Coming back to tabletop BattleTech for first time this century (last time I played TT was the 90s).
Everything 'Catalyst' is new to me.
Imagine my pleased shock to discover the quality and bang for buck on the current products.
I picked a helluva time to come back to this game.
Example; been gaming since the 80s. Never once have I painted a single miniature. The quality of the current Catalyst minis has me wanting to.... Then the bastards put out a newbie paint kit, targeting exactly me... I start looking up tutorials... Holy hell... Tons of painting tips, so many, I am able to pick BattleTech focus only... I was watching a live stream of guy painting, asking questions...
Now, not the 80s or 90s is BattleTech's Golden Age. As far as I can tell, now is the best time to be playing this game.

Sadly I was a wee one when, FASA Corporation's original 1984 created this game. Played it in 1997. Ah the metal figs of memories.

Looks to be a good box with an okay price point for what you get compared to other similar sets from other companies, enjoyed the unboxing.

A great video and look at the new box. When you play it post a review of what you think, if you don't mind!
Like you, I got into the game in the 80s (right after it switched from Battledroids. I still have the empty Battledroids box a friend gave me) and we played it as a break from AD&D until the Clans and the horrible imbalance that came with them ruined the game for my group (We stayed with FASA and replaced Battletech with Shadowrun 😛). I got back into the game with the MWClix game and enjoyed that for a few years but never really got back into the tabletop game. I do remember hearing about Alpha Strike as being the quick way to play with minimal paperwork (or without a C64 program my co-GM wrote to make it easier to keep track of damage in huge battles), but I never looked into it because the obvious thought was, "Minimal paperwork? What fun is that?" 😛
I think Alpha Strike might fill the same slot with tabletop Battletech that MechWarrior Clix did for me: a quick and easy way to get together with friends, have a battle, swear occasionally, and then make plans for the next game. 😛I actually ran MWClix campaigns instead of just tournament/one off games and enjoyed that too. Clix had the advantage of mixed force usefulness in a way that Battletech never really managed, but other than that there weren't any major differences between it and what I've heard about Alpha Strike.
Fortunately(?) I get my Battletech fix now through the computer game that came out a few years ago. With a mod I can play in my beloved 3025 era and avoid all the 3050 and beyond crap. 😀

I feel like you are me talking to me! My friends and I were the same way, 3025 for life, Succession Wars we love. The Clan Invasion was a good read but the imbalance wrecked the tabletop. Love the TSR/FASA age of games. Played modified 2nd Ed AD&D up until recent.
I would love to make a post battle report but I have no one to play with here. I went from the Geek Capital of the US with Seattle to small town North Carolina (don't ask, bad choice) and I have not found an in with the gamers here. My introverted anti-social nature never helps. Miss my gamer friends bast west.
I will see what I can do. Maybe give my thoughts once I give the rules a read or three. Thanks for the awesome response.

@@wargameforge LOL! Hey! Don't knock the Carolinas! They're pretty awesome! Though I understand the limitations of a semi-reclusive nature since I have that too.
I live on the other side of the mountains in East Tennessee though for the last sixish months I've been living in a tiny town in South Carolina taking care of the property and selling/donating my late father's belongings as the executor instructs while the estate gets settled, so I understand being far away from old gaming friends. But, on the plus side, you're now somewhere much more affordable than Seattle, so that might give you more money for the games you love. 😀
Even solo play beats no play, and I don't know how many times in my life I ran solo battles to playtest the next session for the group or just to test variant ideas. I get the feeling of me talking to me as I agree with you that mercenary life was the only Battletech life worth living. 😀
Have fun and give it a run. I'm curious to know what you think of Alpha Strike!

@thatpatrickguy3446 Very true but the humidity on the coast is killing me in the summer. Was looking at Tennessee as an option.

      @thatpatrickguy3446 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@wargameforge LOL. I get that. The humidity can be a beast for those not used to some of the sweltering conditions that can come with summers. I like East Tennessee a lot, though I admit that the East Tennessee valley can be hell for those with allergies as it is an enclosed valley so pollen and such tend to be blown into it by the prevailing winds from the southwest and then stuck in it semi-permanently. Here's hoping you can adapt to coastal NC without too much difficulty and hopefully find a FLGS and gaming community where you can make contacts with other interested gamers/grognards like us. 😀

I highly recommend getting a set of movement dice from Aries or Fortress. Death Ray Designs has token sets for tracking heat, c3, and crits. I'm a classic player at heart but after playing in the Southern Assault tournaments this year and last, I really dig Alpha Strike too. Much more approachable for young and new players

    • @wargameforge

Thank you but I do not need to buy more dice. My friends and I use tiny dice of different colors we used to represent this. And we never played game so huge we couldn't remember what we moved of all out mechs. And we trusted each other to be honest.

Some things that I have learned from playing both Alpha Strike and Classic Battletech:
-You can use the map sheets for Alpha Strike, you just need to halve all the ranges and movement values
-Alpha Strike is A LOT faster to play than Classic Battletech, my brother and I can typically play a company sized game in Alpha Strike in about half the time it would take to do a lance battle in Classic Battletech
-Alpha Strike very much simplifies the rules to the point some very good mechs like the 3025 Grasshopper become less good to take, while some pretty bad mechs like any version of the Bombardier become a decent choice
-Most (if not all) tactics that you have learned and mastered in Classic Battletech are still very much applicable to Alpha Strike

    • @Kingofdragons117
      @Kingofdragons117 ปีที่แล้ว

I disagree. The Grasshopper is still very good in Alpha Strike. Even better imo since the medium range does 4 damage.

    • @blackfocker3727

@@Kingofdragons117 I agree that the Grasshopper is still good to take, but I feel that it has gone from a 9 or 10 in Classic to about a 6 or 7 in Alpha Strike.

    * I like that is has so many mechs.
    * I do not like the fragile cardboard blocky buildings. Texturing of these buildings is not great. And it has 15 pieces.
    * I like that it covers a different era.
    * I do not like that if you bought the Force Packs, you do not get many new mechs. Having these force packs turn this box into lots of duplicate mechs and pure cardboard.
