- In a World Premiere, I have exclusive access to the brand spanking new #JK-BMS.
The JK has the reputation, to be the #best #BMS for the DIY scene when it comes to performance, reliability and balancing power. It is the only BMS on the market which does strong and effective active balancing.
With this new version, Jikong has developed a BMS which goes beyond all that and now offers features, which were exclusive to other brands only until now: communication to 48+ inverters, current limiter and firmware upgradability and much more.
In this first part of the comprehensive review, we are having a look at the hardware of the new BMS, the built quality, the specifications and also if it is compatible with other BMSes like the Seplos and PACE BMS.

I'm collecting all questions about the new JK-BMS and will do a Q&A video after the test series. So, keep the questions coming, guys!
I would be interested in knowing if the BMS needs some type of active cooling at high currents.
Welcome to the 3D printing world, I got one for the same reasons you did; hit me up if you need some CAD work done.
I'd like to know if it implements the controls for DVCC, while some systems communicate back to the cerbo controller, they dont all form a closed loop control. So i would love to know if they can communicate the charge current limit or not, and whether or not multiple in a stack will contribute or negate from the charge current, if i use your shelf as an example (btw we used yours as an example to build our :), so thanks for the motivation) will a single shelf saying it didnt want charge prevent the other shelves from getting it ?
I'm wondering if you can use two BMS in parallel on the same battery bank. For redundancy and for separating loads of different priority. I already have a JK_B2A BMS and i'm interested if i could use this new one in parallel with that.
Will you be able to test multiples of these in a parallel pack and tell us how the software handles config of individual boards?
@@Default3568I dont see why you couldn’t, so long as both BMS’s aren’t pulling more amps than ur battery can safely deliver at any one time, probably not the way I would go tho, if one BMS can handle the load ur putting on it I would keep the second BMS on the shelf as a spare & get a bit more creative with the rest of the system.
Dear channel author. I want to send you greetings from Ukraine. Many people from Ukraine watch your channel and study your research results. Slava Ukraine!

Wonderful!
Where is an 18 oder 20S version? ;-(
And what is a “10A parallel charging current limiting” and why is the coil referred to?
The current limiter video. It's all here 😉
th-cam.com/video/Rsb8wRqtNs0/w-d-xo.html
I am currently running 4- JK BMS's, I'm relatively happy with them, however, 1) I would appreciate better communication when they push out the updates, those of you who have experienced some of these know what I'm talking about. 2) I wish they had a U.S. based store to handle issues WHEN the BMS heads south and requires replacement. Shipping to China costs more than the replacement of the unit.
Hook this A! JK BMS to A 24 Volt BatteryAndy to See If It Works
Then I Will Buy For Sure!!!
Will Be Very Thankful If You Do This
It will work with 24V batteries no problem.

By the way, at five a clock on monday morning down under i am workinh i guess...
The video is waiting for you when you come home.
Hi Andy, the JK BMS in the Video looks different to the picture on your Website. Can you explain it.
Can't wait for more details.
Waiting for the new video. Could you explain main benefits from older JK Bms version? I was planning to use a 150A 2A for my project with a Victron Multiplus inverter and a Arduino board with Venus OS.
it was created primarily for the 16S-battery-banks. you can connect several 16s-banks (for example the EEL V4-JK boxes) and communicates also with the listed 48-inverters. Has the heater port .
instead of 3D printing a bracket... How about replacing the whole metal front panel? In this fashion you can still use the Seplos should you choose by swapping out the front plate.
It's not a straight plate though and has mounting holes and brackets for the fuse at the back. But yeah, would be the cleanest option.
I thought the older JK BMS had also active balancing like the B2A24S20P?
Yes, all JK-BMS have active balancing PB series and BD series.
Am I missing something??? 200A discharge, but only 10A charging limit? The only references to charge current limiting in the datasheet seem to disagree. One spec shows 10A the other 25A. What do they mean by "Parallel charging current limit"? Is this referring only to the balancing function? I have 48V 1200Ah LiFePO4 bank and need up to 110A charging capability.
Imagine you have 10% SOC battery and 100% SOC battery. What happens when you will connect them in parallel? One will charge another with huge current. So it is why 10amps parallel current limiter required
@@ВладиславМартишевahh, I was wondering what that was about, thanks. I guess this is a good idea/feature to have, but I am a bit sceptical of the need for it, as Andy has shown & I have witnessed myself, these large currents dont last long & aren’t that large anyhow compared to normal charging and discharging currents when running microwaves, air cons, air fryers, etc from inverters, those initial currents don’t seem that large. I hooked a flat 24v 5kw battery to another full SOC battery of same capacity once to wake up a BMS, and when it woke up it was pulling 80+amps for a short while & then went down fairly quickly, it probably spiked much higher for a very short time before i got to see the amp draw, but it wasn’t that drastic really, the microwave & coffee machine can make it spike up to 140A or more.
The current limiter will kick in when over current protection is reached. Other BMS would now turn off altogether, these BMS all have a 10A/20A current limiter and just reduce the current. They check after a minute until the current is below the over current protection.
Is there a precharge function in BMS? Maybe it can be done through a separate resistor?
How does the battery heating function work? As in the old versions of BMS, have they been updated?
It's possible that there's a pre-charge. The screenshots I saw for the latest version (4.16.3) that I downloaded last week showed a "Pre-discharge ON/OFF" at the top. Didn't appear when I ran it, but mine are both older models.
Communication ports, etc look generic so you could just rewire and splice the BMS into these existing ports. Hopefully. ;)
The RS485 standard is the same but the protocols are different. So, that's not that easy. More about this in the next video.
Is the "old" style LCD Display compatible with the "new" style BMS?
If it has the same plug it should work.
I realy like to known it's own power consumption/standby power
OK
I just watched the last video, and when I get to the end, you have another one for me to watch!
The BMS is added to my cart on AliExpress, now I have to wait until the next to decide if I buy?
Yeah, wait for the next video...

hello andy, what does it means that this new bms can work in paralel? can we use 3x new bms for 3x battery pack in battery 2.0 shelf and then connect to converter? and converter cannthan see each battery pack information? thank you
Yes, exactly. It's the parallel communication these BMS provide. The inverter gets information from all batteries connected in parallel.
Monday morning if I'm correct in lipreading...we will take you by your word....a promise is a promise and cannot be broken🙂
I didn't say Monday 😉
There were some... complications. It's uploading now.
🦦 3d Printing isnt the problem you just have to print 😉 but you habe to draw a object in a program which you have to learn 🐬
That's the fun part. I will use TinkerCAD to begin with
Why is it called inverter style? Seems like Rack style would be more appropriate.
They call it inverter BMS as most people use an hybrid inverter which can also charge the battery and solar is connected to this inverter as well.
Perhaps with your influence JK will make available optional front cover replacement for Seplos MASON box
I'm not sure if they are into metal work...
Hi Andy,
rather disappointed with part one :(
I almost bought the Seplos V3 BMS and active balancer untill you pointed out, there was no way to turn it on or off
this new JK-BMS with active balancer... can you program the balancer, does it turn on and off itself
I would like to order one, do I have to wait weeks for your Q&A video ?? to get the answer.
that would be a popsicle stand
Like with the old JK-BMS, the balancer can be fully programmed in the BMS application.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia thanks Andy... looking at a Seplos 280L kit. would the JK-BMS fit in as a replacement
Cheers
I have asked the Chinese batterybox builders if they could deliver it with the JKBMS. They all asked me what inverter i was using. I told them Deye, all told me JKBMS does not test their CANbus BMS with Deye or any other inverter. I think they all just do not have a suitable case for JKBMS. Just pitty the Chinese manufacturers allways twist the truth.
The JK-BMS is brand new on the market. Many battery box manufacturers may not be aware of the new JK and maybe think about the older style BMS which does not have communication.
Well, i have showed them the link to this BMS and still they claim: "JK does not test their BMS with any inverters." So, i am curious what you can tell us in part 2.
Any possibility JK will work on 18 or 20sBMS?
I do run 18s on my Victron system to improve storage with approx 2 extra kWh.
Not the new one, I'm afraid. Due to compatibility, most people just run with the 16s system and get a second battery if they need more storage.
and invertes like Deye have a limit of 60V...(16S x 3,65 = 58,4V). Actually i have my maximum at 3,47V = 55,5V@@OffGridGarageAustralia
Wow! Nice!
I predict this will be the new King of the Hill for the larger BMS-ses, JK really improved (again!)
I look forward to your findings, conclusions and sharing of your experiences.
Yeah, I hope they can work it out and make it perfect...
@@OffGridGarageAustralia With your assistance and honest feedbacks, I expect they can make it into a better, if not, perfect product.
But it may take a few S.P.A.T's ;-)

12:52 Aren't these Inductors for Charge Current Limit functionality???
Yes, that's what I said 😉
Good evening
I wanna know if jk better than seplos for solar energy storage 🙄
Well, we don't know yet. I'm still testing...
I have ordered one, 150amp x 2 amp balance,I hope they can do MQTT logging somewhere down the track
Hmm, that will be interesting.
You're killing me with anticipation Andy! By the looks of your last post on TH-cam, it appears the JK is killing you too. Man o Man! Why can't these manufacturers get it right?
I don't get it either. It's insane that they make the same mistakes again and again...
Interesting...Looking forward to the feature list...I don't have communication with my current JK BMS (EG4 inverters), of course I don't think I ever tried to connect it yet, in my, if it aint broken, leave it be, style....Not sure I would benefit from communication, user defined works like a clock...But, who knows...
Hi Andy,
I am currently running two of the earlier JK's and they are just fantastic.
This new version looks great also, however there are two things they should have included.
Upgrade the balance current from 2 to 10 amps - adjustable
Wifi connectivity.
Please let us know what you think.
Thanks heaps Andy for your ongoing contribution to us Solar enthusiasts.

@@jk.ess.solution Thank your very much for listening to your customers and the community here 👍❣
I just bought two of the new Inverter BMS for testing them with multiple parallel battery packs...
Great purchase imho, and according to specs is gonna be a killer of many.
Thnx for review
Glory to Ukraine and sunny Australia!
Thank you.
Hi I want to make a large plant of around 40kw. lifepo4.
of course BMS' must be a jk. with active balancer.. but what are your thoughts.
I have the opportunity for 6 months of the year to charge with approx. 30 kw per day on average.. the consumption is approx. 7 to 12 kw / 24 hours..
i live in northern europe ( Denmark) so there will be bad weather days too...
so the question is.. should I make several small banks of e.g. 10-15kw which can then be used separately or is it more sensible to make 1 large bank of 500A, it won't be 40kw, so it will probably be 2 banks of the same 20 - 25kw. the piece.
The idea was to have capacity for 3 to 4 days with poor sunshine conditions.
for info I am an electronics engineer and have the right relays with arc breakers to make an automatic switching system together with a plc that monitors the system.
any information is greatly appreciated.. many thanks, kim.
I would definitely built several battery banks, each with their own BMS and parallel them afterwards. In case on needs maintenance, you can just take this one battery offline and the rest keep the system running.
I've got some Carlsberg in my S.P.A.T. fridge at the moment. You may have heard of it...
@@OffGridGarageAustralia yes I just sent you a spat too.. it is well deserved.. these are some very informative videos you make.. I may have more questions on hand as I approach the project.. and more spat will of course follow.
how could you build a large bank of 500A? you mean 500Ah? well, the biggest prismatic cell available has 304Ah..... , so build 3 banks each 280Ah or 304ah ....
hi, given your experience, on a 2p16s system with a 4A neey 4th active balancer, what do you recommend as a BMS, a seplos or the new jk? I currently have that piece of junk Elerix installed which only gives problems with incorrect voltage measurements and continuous system shutdowns and I want to replace it with one of these two BMS. thanks
looks very promising to me!!!
cant wait for further tests - THX ANDY!

Uploading as we speak...
Damn, just ordered a plain B2A20S20P for my 16S solar inverter battery, should I upgrade to PB2A16S20P? What are the benefits?
how would you fit this in the EVE vertical diy kit?
I guess, we will find out soon.
Wow Andy! It does indeed look amazing. I’m in love 😍
I want one, although I don’t need one. My old JK is doing a great job!
Yeah, no need at all to swap.
It would really be great to see the JK-BMS firmware (and associated test suite) being made open-source. This would really be a stand-out feature, aid debugging of BMS quirks and enable (slightly better) validation of what is deployed.
I do understand that making incorrect changes to the firmware might at best cause the device to brick, however that is still the case for a firmware update released by Jikong.
It probably will not happen because of ownership (presumably Jikong subcontract part of the design process), but it is nice to dream!
Yeah, they probably need a lot of help with their software...
How does this compare to the seplos or pace BMS? I am building a 48v 300ah prismatic battery with grade a eve cells. Comments greatly appreciated
So curious. Let's see what you find out. This could indeed become the best BMS in town.
Fingers crossed🤞
Hi Andy and thank you for this video and the presentation of this JK BMS!
I saw it on Aliex just a few days ago!
And I thought.. finally..finally!! a bms with an active balancer included!!
Great!!
Can't wait to see it work.. but I'm pretty sure it will be the best!
All that's missing a balancer at the other... let's hope that they will react afterwards...
We are waiting for your test!!
Well, we will see how the JK performs in future tests...
I knew you had a big zollstock!
Are we doing a size comparison here?!🧐

Where can I find the wiring diagram of that specific JK BMS.. need help badly
😂
Enjoyed your excitement!
I purchased my JK bms over a year ago and I haven't seen your videos on "industrial" bms models. So a current limiting feature, and that one attached red cable are not obvious functions to me. Can you provide some explanation on these features in your next video?
I think the understanding of "industrial" would be: A BMS which would be used by professionals in the battery industry, to build battery packs for their customers. Hence industrial.
It's a solution that offers "all" features you might want to include in a battery pack. Obviously, you don't have to be working in the industry with a customer base to be able to build a pack with these.
Consider the Seplos Mason BMS, or the Gobel Power's Pace BMS that Andy has reviewed a lot in his recent videos. These are "industrial" BMSs. The very same that he compares the JK to in this video.
The current limiting is a safety protection feature. If the current (draw or charge) exceeds a limit you define, it will switch over to the current limit circuit, so that the battery pack (including the BMS) is protected, but you do not lose power by disconnection as was common in earlier BMS implementations.
The single red wire, possibly used to tap power for a device which you want to keep out of the main current path. You don't want to draw 250a through an LCD display for example. Or perhaps it could be for voltage measurement. Look up 4-wire Kelvin Method for Voltage and Current measurement. It could be a "partial" (or alternative) implementation of that.
Edit: I rewatched the beginning of the video.
It looks like perhaps Jikong may be using disconnect for the main path of current flow, and this single red wire is the current path when using the current limit circuit. Something like that.
@@CollinBailliethat is interesting.
I have been considering a second circuit myself. A primary load circuit for all normal loads, and a second circuit just for low power applications like running a modern, and sensor monitoring.
Here is a video, I made about the current limiters in these BMSes: th-cam.com/video/Rsb8wRqtNs0/w-d-xo.html

I would like to know whether the 100A model has a more sensitive current shunt and thus more accurate SoC tracking.
I doubt that. It's the same hardware just the amount of parallel MOSFETs will be different.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia if they vary the number of MOSFETs then it is quite easy for them to also vary the number of shunt resistors. For example, 4 resistors in parallel on the 200A model. Remove 1 resistor for the 150A and remove 2 resistors for the 100A. That doubles the current sensitivity and saves them a few cents.
@@henvernyeah, I don't think they are doing this with their different models.
Thanks Andy for the size comparison of the B.M.S boards, I always wonder about this.
Hey, it's not about size! 😉
I share your excitement about this BMS. I will have a Lux Power 12k inverter charger and it is on the list.
I don't understand what you're saying about the switch. Does this model require a switch to keep the internals from draining while in storage?
So thats the sales promo then , bit overwhelming, so many bells and whistles, too much to take in, needs to be viewed on a data sheet £140-185£ +tax n pnp
Which bms has the most features. A comparison video would be awesome. Great content.
Dear andy , can you please test JK new Smart Shunt and how does it compare to victron smart shunt especially in long term accuracy. I heard that most similar products drift overtime if they don't get periodic synchronizations which rarely happen in winter
All shunts will drift, regardless which one you use. They all need frequent calibration. So, which one do you trust???
@@OffGridGarageAustralia offcourse I trust victron over chinese products like Aili shunt. However i wanted to know if these new shunt from JK is close to european products rather than chinese . best regards
Greetings, off-Grid Garage” from Puerto Rico Caribeean Island USA. I am very eager to see that “”JK-BMS” working. I have three Rack-type LiFePO4 batteries and different capacities connected in Parallel. My solar system is all 24Vdc and I have 8.7Kw of solar panels and plenty of sun in the Caribbean. I also have four Renogy Rover 60A solar chargers to charge my LiFePO4 battery bank of 20Kw in total with the sum of my three batteries. The BMS are 24Vdc and my inverter is 4Kw at 24Vdc. I want to upgrade to a Schneider Pro 6.8Kw 48Vdc inverter. Also change the BMS from 24VDc to 48Vdc with active balance of JK-BMS. They are a fan of yours and I never write to you and I am subscribed to your channel and I always give you a “Like”. You do everything better. I want to see that JK-BMS project to jump from 24Vdc to 48Vdc with my 20Kw of LiFePO4 batteries. Thanks for your channel, drjaca
Thank you.
So what exactly is an inverter bms? Wouldn't it be more important for the bms to talk to the mppt solar controller?
They call it inverter BMS as most people use an hybrid inverter which can also charge the battery and solar is connected to this inverter as well.
But yeah, it will talk to the Victron Venus OS for example and control the MPPTs.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Thänks! I use 4 Epever MPPTs and I cannot allow the BMS to disconnect them from the battery. I might disconnect the solar input using Solid State Relays or something.
@@moestreiThe BMS should never disconnect the battery unless there is something wrong. The BMS is there to protect the battery, not your other equipment.
You can built a save solar disconnect yourself. Use a voltage detection module and let it trigger a contactor which disconnects your solar. In this case the Epever stay connected with the battery.
Another great video, eagerly awaiting Part 2. Nice to see you have communications with JK. I have a new JK BMS JK BD6A20S10PC and cannot get it to communicate with a Cerbo GX using CAN. If you can post a link to JK support some time that woul d be very helpfull. Keep up the good work.
Try the GPS Port which should provide TTL.
Hi thank you your reply. Tks I will try that. I only have one RS485 adapter with the correct 4 pin plug, but I am not sure if is a 16S. I identify it and try that.
Now we are talking... all other BMS's seem to fall short in several aspects.
Balnacing function to start, and having to ho through each and every one of them to program individually.
Really excited to see this one going on "Andy's testing program" and the update feature seems a great advantage.
Keep'em coming Andy.
Wait for the next video, my friend!
Cleaner more precise and consistent yes this is not how 3d printing works it takes some work to get clean and precise prints but you can do it can’t wait for the 3d printing video creating parts with the power of the sun
Looks like in nice pice of electronics, the red wire could be a little slicker with a PCB connector instead.
Seems like a great opportunity for an enterprising someone to produce front panels/mounting solutions for the battery rack cases out there, and/or a case for this BMS......
Yes, absolutely, replacement front panels for the EEL and Seplos DIY boxes matching the JK-BMS.
EEL has now the proper box. EEL V4-JK 48V-Box......
I felt like eating poppadum's after hearing this video !
And i need to find 3,2v 280ah 8 pcs to make 25,6 volt
I would like to know the benefits of this new 'industrial' JK BMS over the physically smaller older JK BMS's. I am running three older 16S/200A/2A JK BMS's. Each is controlling a 16S2P pack and they all seem to work well so wonder what I will be missing out on with the new version.
The selling point of this new BMS is its ability to communicate with and be controlled by your inverter. A more integrated component of an energy storage system.
Also communication between multiple packs using the same BMS board. Maybe JK have finally implemented Andy's "single pane" management console, so you can tweak settings on individual BMS modules from a single common connection between PC and Batteries.
Let's hope Andy has more than one of these new BMS boards and enough cells to test a multi-pack setup.
Thanks for the info. Two of my three packs are in trailers taking power between locations so each pack is being charged and discharged independently. Although the benefits of the new BMS are impressive, they are probably not a game changer in my particular application. It will never the less be interesting to see what we all learn as Andy takes us on a journey of discovery.
and the new one has the heater-function. the older model have this only when order with "-HC"@@nigelcharles511
What does this mean INVERTER BMS?
Never heard of an inverter BMS, just regular BMS... Thanks, your awesome, still.
They call it inverter BMS as most people use an hybrid inverter which can also charge the battery and solar is connected to this inverter as well.
The power terminals need an insulator to stop a lug from touching the aluminum heatsink or the neighboring lug. Most electronics give a few INCHES ....not MMs for clearance.
This BMS looks very promising. That 2A balance current is getting there.
Yeah, that's a good point. I'll test this with some 70mm ring lugs.
I do not find how to update firmware using ios? can you help?
When i see all these bmses and the hardware you own, i am so jealous! Man, thats insane!
Yeah, it's getting a lot. Proper testing underway...
Hi Andy, i got a question, i got jk 2a 6-24s 200a , the black one, 48v battery bank, can i parallel together with the new jk inverter bms..??? Thank you so much
Yes, you can, but no communication between the BMS and your inverter.
Could you do a video on connecting this BMS to the Victron Cerbo and any programming needed to get it up and running? That would be great
For sure I will do that!
Why are the blue capacitors visible on the original pictures and on the pictures on the JK BMS website and they are not on this model?
Some last minute design changes. Not the only one, I'm afraid.
I would be interested in this new JK BMS on my 3 Mason Seplos battery packs, so will be looking out for the next video, where you try this Andy!!
I won't try this in the next video. We have to wait for the full test results of the JK BMS and see how good it really is...
Wonderful video. BUT I still do not understand the difference in between the 2 versions of JK-BMS: -first: black plastic housing type B2A-xxx and -second, the one presented here, metall sheet type PB2A-xxx??? So what makes the difference in between B and PB? Thanks from the geographic center of Bavaria/Germany to anyone who can help me to decide.
Now this is a BMS that has the potential to replace the Batrium BMS’s if they can get a few things right! And I hope they can!! A coupe of things I would want to see is the locally attached display be able to show a bar graph much like how Batrium does. With a bar graph representing each individual cell, you can see so much more information than just one value at a time like voltage. I would also like to see their desktop software be able to display all daisy chained batteries in a common interface at once. So if you have 4 packs of 16S each, you should be able to see them all and interact with them as a whole or still individually. So if I needed to put a pack into “maintenance mode”, I should be able to set it in the software (and from Venus OS) on that individual pack and the midgets should stop the flow of power in and out of the battery or as defined by the “maintenance mode” settings for that pack. Also, you have one set of values to configure and manage for the whole system and not on each individual bms when they are all daisy chained together. And if they loose comms at some point, they should continue to operate under the last known settings provided by the ‘master’. Lastly, the BMS should support all common voltages without having to buy another BMS if you need to change voltages. I.e. 12, 24, 36, & 48.
If they could do these things, while still being able to connect to Victron, that would be impressive and I would replace all of my Batrium BMS’s with it! Because the one thing Batrium doesn’t have is power flow control. I.e. Power in but not out mosfets.
Most of your question will be answered in the next video, Part II
Do all these JK BMS’s work together? I am thinking of using these for several battery packs - which I will continue to build over time. I don’t want to end up with 3 or 4 of these only to find they have been replaced and the new version won’t communicate with these. ?
Good question. I hope it will be only firmware updates being necessary.
Hi Andy can you tell me if you have covered the so called 12 volt lifepo combined pack replacement for the typical auto lead acid battery - allegedly a drop-in replacement ? several vendors here eg Liitokalo Ebay 12V 150Ah + LCD Lifepo4 Battery Pack Li-ion Iron Phosphate Deep 4000 Cycle. Given the amazing surgical inspection of BMS I wonder how these can perform given they are just a black box. If you have commented elsewhere pls link
The link has gone showing a teardown of whats inside these Auto 12v Lifepo battery cases. The short answer is stay clear of these, dont let inside your expensive car let alone inside your house, but do your own research with all Andy's great emphasis on safety in mind
Hi Andy. Amazing tutorial! I have question may i connect this bms to the battery and use it with inverter without any support communications ports like CAN, rs485? Thanks
Yes, sure, that will works as well.
i was waiting for this video ever since the inverter bms was announced :D
Here it is. And more to come...
looking forward to your testing with the new jk! on your site you have the link to the NEEY 15A Smart Active Balancer and there is somting starnge going on with the seller becose the price is 17 € and the latest comment said they got some other pruduct
You have to select the NEEY 15A balancer on the site, not the NEEY adapter for $17 😉
The promise of a new paradigm in battery management...
Exactly, it's a promise! Can they deliver though?
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Well, we trust Andy will deliver the verdict on that...
An absolutely brilliant channel, straight forward down to earth approach, love your sense of humour.
Thanks a lot for your kind feedback!
Newbie question ... but what does the "Inverter" part mean? It can connect to an inverter, or something else? Also, Is there any logging capability that you can download or have posted to a database?
They call it inverter BMS as most people use an hybrid inverter which can also charge the battery and solar is connected to this inverter as well.
The best and cleanest way to replace another BMS with this one in a DIY box is to replace the entire front plate with new cutouts and holes for mounting the BMS. Laser cutting isn't that expensive and it sure can be found locally everywhere. But I suppose if there is a demand for it, there are plenty of DIY solutions, but also plenty of ready-made replacement front plates on various e-shops. It's going to be a bit more complicated with those round corner boxes.
But I'm sure there will be DIY boxes just for this BMS, so just wait and no question there will be, but when will they be available.
Yeah, I expect this as well. The front plate of the MASON box is not straight flat on the back site and has mounts for the fuse for example. So, there needs to be some welding done as well.
Replacing the front plate would be the best solution. You can even get such services from China directly if you deliver the drawings.

kid at chrismas time
Even Christmas can be disappointing if you don't get what you thought you are getting. Part 2 is now uploading...
You kind of lost me when you said "inverter style" BMS. What does this mean? I have one of their 200A BMS with 2A active balancing (about 16 months old) for a 16S DIY build. How does this differ, other than the limiter and a couple of other features? I'm just trying to understand what more this "inverter style" BMS does over the old JK BMS, and if I actually would get much benefit switching over to it??? I'm using a SolArk (Deye) inverter, so communication is nice, but not really necessary either.
He means the BMS is designed to suit rack mount batteries that provide easy to connect comms cable to an inverter.
They call it inverter BMS as most people use an hybrid inverter which can also charge the battery and solar is connected to this inverter as well.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia So how is that different than the regular JK BMS they have historically sold?
@@ssoffshore5111The old one has no communication. That is pretty much the biggest difference. If one parameter goes out of spec, the BMS simply turns off the battery. In general, this is a bad design and you will lose power of your system altogether.
With coms, the BMS can report an issue of a rising cell voltage or temperature to the charger so it slows down or stops charging BEFORE the BMS kicks in any protection and disconnects everything.
I'll make a video soon and go over some pros and cons of both sort of BMS.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Thanks
I was waiting for this video for long time :D
There will be more soon!
Nice new piece of hardware!
As for the mounting it shouldn't be too hard to create a model and 3d print something, not only as adapter for the display but also for the main board....but a simple metal bar with matching holes for the board is also pretty easy to create (its also much faster to do). The question is how much space is in the case.
Now I'm looking forward to see which 3D printer you bought.
There is enough space in the boxes. Metal work would take a lot longer than creating a 3D CAD file and print it. At least for me as I don't have a metal workshop.
@@OffGridGarageAustraliaHi Andy, it doesn't have to be fancy. Two simple bars of metal (maybe aluminium) with holes matching the screwholes in the case (2-3 holes for the top row and the same for the bottom) + 2x 2-3 threaded holes to screw the new board on the bar. At least that's what I get from what I've seen in the video. Depending how "bombenfest" you would like to have it it's either 2 or 3 mounting points on each metal bar. 😉
A 3d model is also quite simple. For the size/orientation is depends on the build volume of your 3d printer. I'm looking forward to see what you'll come up with.
I currently struggle with a complex 3d design with different roudings that morph into each other to fix my headphones because of a broken plastic part...this evening I'll check the first prototype. Surprisingly so far no one else created a replacement part and uploaded it the the know places although the part is apparently identical on both successor models and was probably planned to break at exactly this point.
Other than that I hope to work on my solar installation (12x 405Wp) on the garage this weekend...depending on the weather condition (waiting for one piece of hardware + change the angle of the panels for the winter to get a little bit more energy).
Greetings from northwest Germany...not sunny but so far at least dry (the last couple of days were "Land unter")!
@@j.w.u.5728Thanks for sharing your idea. Matching the holes correctly is already a challenge when you don't have the right equipment other than a battery drill.
Yeah, I always listen to hr3 radio from Frankfurt in the Tesla and am aware of the flooding in your area...
Will this BMS connect to the Sofar Solar inverter at this time?
Haha. Get out of your rocking chair Grandpa!
No seriously, must have been fun doing spat and doing electric things at the same time. Hope you didnt scorch yourself. Stay safe , be happy.
Not one drop during work, hahaha. I had a few after the 2nd video coming tomorrow though.
I hope they will improve their LCD graphical quality and functionality , looking forward for the testing video, always learn something from your video, thank you andy
Thanks a lot!
hi andy! just bought that bms... notice that there are 2 "B8" terminal in the balance leads.... which one should i use? tnx!
Have a look at the wiring diagram. The second cell8 cable is not necessary, just connect all the battery + as usual.
We are all waiting for part 2 :)
It's uploading.
3D printing is a bit of a rabbit hole 😅 I like an FLSUN Delta style printer like the Super racer.
I will take it slowly... I don't know anything about 3D printing.
I wonder if the pinout on the front panel cables matches existing brands? new plugs?
The communication board and balance cables are the same as on the Pace BMS. Nothing else is interchangeable.
