Doesn’t that bring recognition to their place in our history? Why would we want to remove those things?

The respectful use of a particular ethnic origin (e.g. the Spartans, the Highlanders, the Trojans, the Blackhawks, etc.) is NOT demeaning in and of itself. Its the difference between calling your sibling or a buddy an "a-hole" and calling someone who cuts you off in traffic without a turn signal an "a-hole". And don’t forget Land O Lakes, who quietly and for no good reason whatsoever removed the Native American girl from their packaging…. I was a loyal buyer of Land O Lakes products until they did that and I’ve hardcore boycotted them ever since the removal. I’ll shop at Target, roll my eyes at Bud Light, but Land O Lakes? No. 😂 I don’t know why it’s such a strong, visceral reaction, but it is.

As a native, I never loved the term redskin, but as far as the football team goes, I feel it did more good than harm. It spread representation and pride for our people. It’s not like wearing a Native American style Halloween outfit that inappropriately reveals too much skin, sexualizing and mocking a culture while ignorantly dismissing the true meaning of it. If a school or team have blessings from the nation, tribes, or even clans, I see nothing short of beautiful representation. ❤️

Some of the Indian cultures dressed in that manner, though. It's pretty simple, the hotter the climate the less clothing worn.
There's a reason if you look at what my ancestors wore during the winter, it looks a lot like what you see the Sami wearing on the other side of the world. It's almost like the environment dictates culture
You can look at how the Wôbanaki dressed during the summer to see that it's not a stereotype. Though are we really going to get mad at "sexy indian" when costumes like sexy lobster, sexy corn, and sexy french fries exist?
"In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total sIut, and no other girls can say anything about it. The hardcore girls just wear lingerie and some sort of animal ears" (Mean Girls)

@@user-ld9tf4td8s I see where you’re coming from and I get what you mean. My family still lives on the rez and of course we wear more or less clothing depending on the environment.
My concern is that everything is sacred and intentional. Each string, each bead, each feather, etc all have a meaning (and this is just clothing). When people use those features with a complete disregard to the culture, in a sole attempt to sexualize themselves (even on an annual occasion), then yes it comes across as more-so mockery in my personal opinion.
I completely agree with you that Halloween is highly sexualized regardless and that people will take any good thing and twist it to be a meaningless fad. Though I think comparing sexualized French fries to a sexualized culture and sacred heritage is very much so comparing apples to oranges.
It saddens me most if anything and it doesn’t stem from a place of wanting to be offended by everything. It comes from a place of knowing that natives have undergone so much is history and have remained one of, if not the most overlooked and disregarded groups of peoples. The world gets angry when people do blackface, but there’s nobody standing up for natives when they do it with our culture.
Which in my eyes, is why I found the representation of the Redskins (especially with blessings from the own tribe and native family) to be beautiful representation. That’s all we’ve ever wanted, beautiful, respectful inclusion, and representation. I know that seems like a stretch to expect that from the whole wide world, but I think our desire to be respected just like anybody else is a valid feeling.
