    Thank you for #1, being humble, #2 breaking it down for people who are newbs. I'm not wanting to use a DAW. I'm an analog guy who feels people spend too much time operating software rather than making music. Hardware is efficient and simple: plug it in and turn the knob, done.

      Totally agree. Until recently I never used a computer in recording music unless I was burning CDs or uploading music online. But I got a digital recorder/mixer a few months ago because tape has several issues; mostly hard to find quality tape these days & it's expensive. Been having trouble using the digital recorder; getting a good sound or a good mix. It's definitely different than tape!!! But there are no tutorials that I can find that help you learn the basics without having to use a !&?@$+ DAW!!!!! Ugh ...

    It took surprisingly long to find this information. I've been trying to find a way to record my vocals and the guitar for a live experience, for a high quality, but not necessarily studio quality. I also needed this accomplished without a computer. Thank you for clarifying and giving me a solution to continue to progress instead of worrying about other expenses I just don't want to involve myself with right now like a whole computer. You the man!

      Likewise bro. I spent days on youtube looking for a short and simple explaination for multitrack recording on a standalone device. This video answered most of my queries. I also love the straight forward visuals of the multitrack devices. I hope to see an end-to-end demo using the standalone devices. Great job!

      @@alfiedj Yes for some reason this info was hard to find! I too would love to see and end-to-end demo that includes moving the recording audio on SD Card to a computer for editing in a proper DAW. How much flexibility do I have? Are the tracks saved separately?

    Dude great video I believe when I record my songs I'll do it like this with the Tascam you used. I don't like making things complicated im not trying to become a producer so no need to be extra I just want to record my music is a good way for others to hear.

    Thank you!!! He says it right there: CD quality. YASSS! Vocalist, pianist, keyboard/synth, flute, guitar, pots and pans, owls, lol...I'm nearly ready to jump on this one. SOOOO grateful for this simple, practical solution! Now I just need to figure out if, once I've got my tracks recorded, can I play them back on the same unit during my gigs? Or maybe record the tracks on the one SD card and pop it in a laptop hooked to speakers? Also, not sure how to make sure it all gets synced but I'm assuming there has to be a way or I will make one up!

  • @spacep0d
    @spacep0d 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for this video! I have a DAW, but I find my DAW brain to be very different than my recording/live playing brain and I don't want to be futzing with a tiny laptop whilst recording, nor do I want to buy a laptop (my main computer is a beast but in a different room). I just want to quickly mark down ideas with vocals and acoustic guitar to a click track (since these are tightly inter-dependent) and then record bass guitar and drums over that.
    I guess a mixer would be redundant with a quality DAW-free recording device?
    Then, what I'd want to do is bring that all to Studio One (in a different room) and then edit it all like a mad scientist....quantizing, repeating good takes, adding FX, etc. Is this possible using the SD Card method you mentioned?
    Thanks!

    I want to start my dawless setup for live performances with low cost obsolete vintage retro equipment, low fi, preferably with midi rather than sync or cv / gate, using drum machine, groove boxes, phrase sampler, korg monotron, volca, casio vl1, midi sequencer, guitar pedals, half rack midi modules etc, maybe a nintendo with the DS10 a casio sk1 etc, what do you recommend? I'm digressing? is it a lot of G.A.S gear syndrom acquisition?

    This is interesting, I will most likely consider getting a multitrack recorder perhaps a decent high end one because in my personal experience i've always have found it very tiduous to record tracks on a computer for some reason.
    The bright screen from a computer monitor, replugging in the interface somtimes for when it cuts connection was a pain and then having to asign tracks from the interface through the daw every single time using a mouse (even with a good editing mouse too) it just can take away from the whole asthetics of simply trying to record a decent track that can have a real raw emotional sound to it. I've tried going portable with a laptop before for a while and it was okay but it still can be way too many things to start up.
    These multitrack recorders seem like the way to go for just plugging in and hitting record.
    Any suggestions on a good multitrack recorder brand??

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same! I'm not a laptop person, and I find the interface horribly annoying (especially track pads). I could use a mouse and better keyboard but now I'm going for the 'live' brain mode of playing and jotting down ideas quickly to the very slow and tedious computer-driven editing. I love the idea of recording tracks, saving them on SD Card (separately I hope) and then doing my real DAW work later when it's quiet and I'm in that mode.

    I love my tascam dp008ex it works with my hiphop and has great mics 🎙️ build in. I didn’t want the 6 track ver cause it don’t have auto master and mix down witch is the best part of the machine anything to avoid a daw I love dawless setups.

    But on the first console, how do you realistically record a song: can you play a couple of tracks to yourself while you record a third for example? Have to be able to hear what you've got so far

    • @crnkmnky

      Any tracks you’ve already recorded on the project can be played back or muted while recording the next two tracks. Just make sure your microphone and headphone cables are long enough to maintain good posture.

    • @ICA_Ghost
      @ICA_Ghost 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      to my knowledge the sound quality is determined by the analog to digital converters wich are placed in audio interfaces or digital mixers (in this case the tascam recorder)

    • @crnkmnky
      @crnkmnky 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ICA_Ghost indeed, the sound quality depends on the hardware quality of the recorder (or computer interface) and whatever mics and cables you plug into it. you can check product reviews if that is a major concern.
