    The best part is that it doesn't have TH-cam on it so you can't get distracted so easily. Thanks for this!

    Thanks for that video, I really enjoyed seeing your set up. This is what the internet is great for in my opinion: people who are passionate about what they do and passing it on. I’ve been playing and writing songs for years but had almost given up trying to record because sitting in front of a computer was killing it for me. Then I learnt about going DAWless from people like you. I got myself a little Tascam 8track and honestly it’s been a revelation. I LOVE it! Thanks again for the vid man. ✌🏻

      And just FYI Jimi Hendrix recorded all his stuff on a 4 track multi track recorder that used tape back in the day.

    Thank you for posting this. I'm a recording artist who is strictly old School. I have a Zoom R24 multi track recorder that I have been using since 2012. I use it to record all of my albums and have had no issues with it whatsoever. I love the simplicity of hardware recorders. My studio is DAW-less and all of my recordings have been nothing less than outstanding. Computers crash when things go wrong and the plug-ins just make the recording process difficult and sound artificial. I have been recording this way dating back to analog Tascam recorders and I prefer it that way. Again, thank you for posting this. Great minds think alike.

      Exactly no having to buy the next upgrade or version to keep your DAW running multi track recorders or a one time buy it learn it use it and you are good to go.
      And I believe they also will make you a better player as well just because of there more old school style when recording.
      I say that because I always play through the whole song when I record each part I do not record in pieces or sections.

    Great video! I have been recording with the same eight track Zoom MRS-802 digital multitracker since 2007. I still use it almost everyday and have recorded over eight albums worth of material on it. The biggest reason why I still use it is that I've become so familiar with it's functions that accessing all of it's features is second nature to me- which means I don't need to think of anything technical except for the music while I'm tracking a part. It also has never crashed or failed on me even once after all these years which is a big plus.

    Back in the day, when I recorded my CD I used a Roland VS 1680. I did my recording exactly like Rocktalk101. I too am 'old school' and started on a 4 track tape deck. Since I got back into recording in the last few years, I have been using computer based DAWs. Most of the time, if I'm not fixing an issue (my God, the issues) of some sort, I'm sitting slack jawed and starry eyed in front of my computer staring at a bewildering array of plug-ins and effects and oh the possibilities are so endless that I don't actually DO anything. Another reviewer described Multitrackers as 'focused' and I agree. I spent 6 months going through plug-ins just to see what I had. The other thing I don't like about PC DAWs is all the....artificialness. I don't like click tracks. I don't like auto-tune. I don't like the temptation to just fix it in editing instead of becoming a better musician and getting the take right. My approach this time is real guitars plugged into real amps and real drums recorded with real microphones into a multitracker, with minimal editing and production.

And I like the fact that you pointed out the part about instead of just fixing it learn to be a better musician and get the take right which is so great that some other them myself understands that. As long as there will be multi track recorders being sold that is what I will use to record with. thanks for watching and commenting as well really appreciate it.

    I agree. I’m old school too. I love how tactile MTRs are. I love the “hands on”. The sliders. The record/play/wind buttons. The track mute/play/record buttons. The gain controls. It’s what I liked about the old reel to reel recording studios, where recording was a craft, not just a lesson in software manipulation. Everyone’s telling I need to move over to Logic Pro, and I’ve tried both it, Cubase and Cakewalk, and hand on heart, I didn’t like any of them. It sounds kind of soulless. Everything’s done with plug ins. And (to me anyway) it’s overly technical and complex. With the MTR I’ve had a song’s worth of drums done, plus a bass and two guitar tracks in a day. A full week of fiddling about with a drums plug in on Logic and I still didn’t have a song’s worth of drums I was 100% happy with. My MTRs a Zoom R16. But I also have a Boss Micro BR80, which I use for quick, on the fly song idea capture. The finished sound with the Zoom though is superb, particularly the on board mastering settings. I’ve used a live drum kit, an Alesis electronic kit and an Alesis SR16 drum machine. All easy to do (though the drum machine is far less disturbing to the neighbours!). You’re right. They’re so easy. Plus, you can pick up the zoom R16, put a hand full of batteries in it, take it to rehearsal and record the entire band! You can’t to that with a DAW.
    Great video and thanks for letting me know I’m not the only one who prefers these over DAWs.

      @Rocktalk101  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks for watching the video and you are not the only old school recording guy out there and for me as long as they make multi track recorders that is how I will record. I to do not like D.A.W.S and I do not like plug ins and I agree using those makes the music sound soul less for sure. I use real drums or my Alesis SR18 for recording drums as well. I have been looking into getting the zoom R16 as well seems like a great unit.

      It is your preference. I can be better&faster(10x) with DAW than with portable multitrack recorder. And i don't know how to make some manipulation on portable multitrack recorder.

      Back in 1993, I bought an Ensoniq ASR-10 and, in 1995, began recording its tracks onto cassettes, using a Tascam 4-track Portastudio. Put out a couple of album's worth of recordings that way and, since it was digital-to-analog, the sound was pristene.

    • @FlyzJono
      @FlyzJono ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-cg4wp1im1r yes, it’s all personal preference. I agree (having used DAWs) that it can be faster using DAW, but I’d suggest “better” is subjective as it depends entirely on the end sound you are hoping to achieve. The stuff I’ve done with cubase, Logic and cakewalk all sounded over polished/pristine, even superficial and over produced (I liken it to the recording equivalent of plastic surgery!😅). The stuff I’ve done on the MTRs, has more warmth, depth, spontaneity and “liveness” to it, as it is definitely more difficult to manipulate or post record rectify the recorded tracks (other than put the signal through effects/modelling etc). I’m not saying I won’t ever use DAW again, but my first preference is definitely the “hands on” of the MTR. But all that matters ultimately, is we keep making music - however we can and however it makes us happy.

But all for the very same reasons you do. I've TRIED several DAW/computer-based recording solutions - even the easy-to-use ones like Gar/Band - but I like the hardware approach, and like you, am unlikely to depart from it, as long as I'm able to make music!
    Am just recently discovering how many people are like me in the DAW vs H/ware debate, so now I don't feel like such a dinosaur. And I make a pretty decent recording too...

    Up until 2000 I used a Fostex DMT8 v2 MIDI Timecode sync'd to an Atari 1040STE with 4MB RAM, and that was running Steinberg Cubase. That was controlling two Yamaha MU100R rack synth modules, that had a vocal harmoniser and virtual wind/string boards. They both had a combined total of four audio inputs, fully controllable by MIDI and had multiple FX processors assigned internally to those inputs. I had a virtual mixer in Cubase and so I could fully automate the mix of the Fostex digital multitrack recorder, by having the track outputs go into the Yamaha MU100R synth audio inputs. There was very little that setup could not do, that my modern PC DAW does now, and it was bullet proof for reliability and ease of use. Once the mix was ready to master, I would record it to my Fostex D5 DAT recorder, and from that to a standalone CD recorder.

    Great video Rocktalk101. Reading all the comments under this video makes me feel justified in my recent decision to go back to using a multi track recorder.
    I started with a Yamaha MT50 four track tape machine before graduating up to a Fostex DMT8 VL digital recorder with the analogue mixer. I did some of my best recordings on that machine. I moved into computer music with Reason and Cakewalk rewired and I made quite a few albums that way, and I admit that those tracks still make money for me to this day, but they don't have the warmth of the multi track recordings from the hardware.
    Running a hybrid set up of an analogue studio with hardware analogue synths, drum machines etc going through an analogue desk into Logic is a lot more closer, and I have been happy with the results, but I am now decided to get a digital recorder as an alternative or companion to using a DAW.
    With computers and DAWs they are always being upgraded so you end up having to buy a new computer when your old one no longer is compatible to the software. I just wasted money on another Mac just to find out if I want to put Logic on it I would have to upgrade as the version that I have on my main Mac is old as I turned off automatic updates on my computer.
    I'm off to purchase a Tascam DP32SD right now and get back to the old school workflow.

      first thanks for watching the video and I am glad this video has made you feel more justified in your decision to go back to a multitrack recording system. I have always recorded with a multitrack since back in the day when I had a 4 track that used a tape. I messed around with a computer DAW but I just did not like it at all and like you said with all the update's glitches that can come with them as well as it cause your computer to freeze up or crash from time to time as some other's have said I just find it not to be as good as using a multi track recorder. So for me I will us a multitrack recorder for as long as they keep making them.

      @@Rocktalk101 Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it and I agree with you. Having a multi track recorder is essential. I've just come back from paying down on the Tascam DP32SD, and a Yamaha MT120 that had just come into the shop. That means I will have had the 50, the
      100 and now the 120. I need a four track to play my old tapes and to record and get that four track demo sound. I will pick them up at the end of the month.

    I worked like this for many years but with a Roland digital 24 track workstation. It was able to output to a monitor and be controlled by mouse and keyboard. I had it synced to an ancient Atari with Cubase and an Akai sampler. If I was still in a full band I might still be using it. When my partner in music and life and I dissolved the band but wanted to continue making music I started experimenting with Garageband which came free with my Macbook Pro. Have to say, 3 years later that I’d never go back to my old school set up. I cant imagine sacrificing the level of control and graphic clarity I have now. I have a couple of nice little interfaces, Logic Pro on a new Macbook and a selection of soft instruments like Ezdrummer. I still record my tube guitar via a miked tube amp though. I’ve never had major latency problems.

    Love it! Great guitar tone. If you got good outboard, no need for plug-in compatibility; they're just watered down algorithms of the _real_ thing.
    The DAW is a remarkable innovation but I think to some degree it's not bringing out the best in musicians and may impede many up & comers from mastering their instrument. I just hope it's not desensitizing future music fans with bionic simulated perfection.
    I switched over to HD recording with _Emagic_ around 2001, for doing film scores and soundtrack work. Due to improvement of my workflow, my creativity gradually began to descend into "potboiler" category.
    When I finally decided to release a new album a decade ago, I set up the old _XT 20 ADAT_ machines and mackie board, probably last time _anyone_ on the planet has tracked on SVHS lol. The increased difficulty of navigating old tech apparently reinvigorated my mojo. I firmly believe adversity is the _best_ fuel for artistic inspiration and I'm afraid DAW recording may be taking something from the art.

      thanks you for the great comment and very well said and I could not agree more. As I have said in other comments for me recording with my multitrack recorder makes me a better player as I play my songs and parts all the way through when I record instead of this record a section and just cut and past. I do not know how many recording sessions I have seen where the band records an album just doing it in bits and pieces and then putting the song together and after it si all done then they ahve to go learn how to actually play the songs they just recorded. Which they should have already know how to play before the start of recording. My old band we would record ideas and stuff and then take those ideas and put them into songs then learn the songs we wrote and then after we had them down tight then would would go record them not the other way around.

    A good video, thank you! I prefer using multi-trackers too. I have the Tascam 32SD, but before I bought that I bought the Tascam DP08EX which is very affordable with good quality sound, but not enough tracks for me, hence upgrading to the 32SD. I do still use the 8 track for "musical sketches". Whenever people start talking about home recording they usually say "get a DAW" which I think is very narrow-minded. You can record some excellent tracks using multi-trackers, the sound quality has improved greatly and they are a lot easier to use. Also, they are very "musical" in the respect you end up recording tracks all the way through and get better at playing whatever instrument you play, instead of getting lazy and recording in bits and pieces which I found I used to do when I used the old Steinberg Pro 24 on the Atari (yes, that's going back some!).

    I still have my Korg D1600 but now I use an MPC One because I got fed up with the linear multitrack paradigm after 40 years.
    I like the freedom of recording each section of a song and being able to swap them around or try adding a pre-chorus or whatever and if I don't like it I can just leave it out - much easier than editing it in and then having to delete it. It's also a lot of fun to sample my playing and chop it up and come up with things that I wouldn't have come up with otherwise.
    The disadvantage with the One is no mic preamps but I could use a USB audio interface with it if I needed multiple mic preamps. As I don't need that I use an ART Voice Channel for mono tracks. I've gone back to the way I used to record on my Tascam 244 so I record with EQ and compression. It's a much quicker way to record and prevents me second guessing my decisions.

      No special equipment either I use an MXL condencer mic and run it through my vocalist live 4 which is a vocal processor I have owned for many years.
      then straight into the recorder line 1. ad some reverb adjust the volumes and let er rip. I will also us a sure SM48 cardioid mic as well when layering the vocals together. as far as mixing and mastering my recorder is set up to do that so all I have to do is set the mix levels were I like them then hit the master button and it does the rest.

I got so damm frustrated with Compression that I eventually gave up and untill now the 16 track stayed in the box. I'm once again trying to get my head around the compression. But as far as fixing notes and stuff like that what I do is record 3 or for tracks of each part and take the best of those playing the song all the way through. that is how they used to have to do it with the old reel to reel tape and it makes you a better player as well as really get food at playing your songs or what ever song you are recording. and it foes not really rake any more work in the long run because going back and editing and punching in and out parts to fix mistakes can actually end up taking you more time in the long run. And me personally if you start time alining everything and trying to make it perfect then you loose the emotion and the soul of the song or album abd things staart to sound robotic.
      But that is just my opinion. And if you took songs that were recorded back in the 70's 80's and 90's and shoved them into pro tools they would sound a lot different actually like shit lol!
      I love the fact I can just plug this thing in adjust my settings hit the record button and off I go!
      back in the day bands played the whole song all the way through the did 3 or 4 takes and kept the best take and that was it,
      Now with things like pro tools the record parts of songs or a riff and then cut and past or copy and past to creat a song and then do all that other editing stuff.
      Then the band has to learn the damn song they pieced together which is just crazy to me.

    I used to have a Tascam 4 track. Over 30 years ago! I am 67 year old lady who has a musical. I really liked your video and wish you lived around the corner from me!! I need to record about five of my songs from my show to put on a cd and go around to the different playhouses in south Florida. I am stuck at the recording part. I am afraid to invest in equipment because I live with my mom and have very small space. Know anyone in south Florida? I am on facebook. Is there anyway we can communicate? Don't want to put my phone number here as too many eyes might see it and my email as well. Also, besides cd's can these finished works be put into the computer as newer, digital formats? Like WAV, MP3, so the song could be sent out in an email or a compressed file?

    • @Rocktalk101
      @Rocktalk101  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there are many options out there for yo uthat do not take up a lot of space and will work great for you. the TASCAM DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio or the Zoom R8 8-Track SD Recorder, Sampler & USB Interface these recoders will alllow you to record mix and master your music and down load it to your computer in mp3 and wav files and then you can burn them on a cd or send thin digitally. you can find lots of multi track recorder forsale at these places musicians friend, american music supply, and sweetwater sound there are many in diffierent price ranges to fit your budget as well. There is a little learning curve to each of them but by reading the manuals and watching tutorial videos on youtube you will be able to figure it out pretty easy. You do not need a big space to record music you can literally set up a recording studio in a small bedroom on a desk these days. it does not take a lot of equipment it just take a couple of things and you are off.

    • @Rocktalk101
      @Rocktalk101  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well on my muilti track recorder I use there is time counter at the top of the screen you can see so it shows you exactly where you are in the song so if you are dragging dropping different tracks you can drop it exactly where you want to. But the way I record is I always lay down my drum tracks first then I reset back to zero and play the rhythm tracks the I do the same thing for the bass tracks as well. Then I will just punch in the leads and what ever other little licks or sections I want using the punch in and out functions. But I always play the song all the way through when playing my guitar rhythm tracks and bass tracks I never do it in sections. I also never use any sync or time a line feature's when recording either because I feel if you time a line everything trying to make it so perfect you loose the feel and real flow of the music and it starts to sound like a bunch of robots playing the song. so many people stopped actually listening to the music and started watching it on a computer screen and trying to make it so perfect that the feel and flow of music has been lost in recording these days. But that is just my opinion but one that I and Slash both agree on that is why he still records on old reel to reel tapes and plays with his whole band in the studio together in a live setting and they take the best take out of about 4 takes and that is what ends up on his albums. Just some food for thought anyway. As far as recording on a computer with a DAW I never use a computer just my 16 track as I hate daw's I like recording the old school way. But your DAW should have a time counter as well to help you a line your songs as well just depends on what you are using. Not sure if that helps but I hope it does. thanks for watching the channel.

But like I said as well don;t be so worried about everything being exactly time a lined I mean you want it to be as close as you can get but music has a flow and some of the best mistakes made while recording ended up being some of the best parts of the greatest songs out there. try just listening with your ears and if it sounds good to you the go for it and stop focusing on what it looks like on a computer screen.
