    I was a lecturer for around 7 years, now I am an associate professor. I wish I have known your channels long time ago, but later is better than never. I watched this video while it says 2 year ago but always your videos are useful as well as interesting.

    Thank you Dr. Caroline Shenton-Taylor. I found your video very useful for lecturer interviews, although not many questions will appear at my job interview, but they are all quite directive.

    For some reason I've recently discovered this interest in me to go into Academia, your videos have helped me loads in giving me insight into UK academic life. Appreciate all the advice you give and keep up the great videos 👍 before I go, this may be mentioned in another video so forgive me if it is but how many hours do you typically work in a week would you say? And does this vary between your colleagues. The work life balance for me seems very attractive but I also don't want to work too much

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching the videos! The work life balance can be quite variable depending on where you are in the university calendar (i.e is it semester time or student vacation). In the main I really like the freedom to set my own schedule. It may also depend on your subject (eg running experiments can be particularly busy) and how much teaching you are timetabled to give. I might try to track my hours and then do a proper comparison with my previous industry job! 😊

    I'm currently a PhD coming up to the final year of my funding. I'm torn because there's good salaries and jobs available in my industry but at the same time I've come to really like the University I'm at, and in particular, my teaching activities (more so than my research). Also, as a Computer Scientist, funding isn't strictly required to produce good research so that's one less thing to worry about. My University is also in a period of hiring many Computer Science lecturers and current PhDs that do their AFHEA are quite easily bumped up into full-time lecturer positions, particularly if they've been there for a while like I have since my undergraduate. Academia seems like a natural progression but salaries and the promotion structure seems antiquated. Equally, having spent so much time in academia, the world of industry seems daunting, especially as I've come to enjoy working independently when it comes to research. Would you say that your time in industry was beneficial or would you recommend going straight into lecturing?

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For me personally, I loved my time in industry and knew it was the right move for me to make after the PhD. (Some of my friends stayed in academia and seemed equally happy.) Fast forward some years, I then equally felt it was right to move back to university as a lecturer! As you comment there are so many factors to consider - working hours, working pattern, type of work, opportunities for growth & travel, finances ... the list goes on. Good luck for your decision and next career steps.

    everything you say in this video is very educational and of interest to me but will you be talking about how much does an lecturer get paid, who pays for the traveling expensive, room and board when out of state, meals is this included.

    Is it compulsory to do research?
    If someone just wants to teach and doesn't enjoy research a lot, can they still be a lecturer or professor

    Great video! I am considering becoming a lecturer and heard many universities don’t have research requirements for this position, is that true? Personally I’m more interested in the teaching aspect and not the research part and was wondering if it’s possible for lectures to not do much research?

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my experience UK lecturers often have a mix of teaching and research - but this might vary depending on your subject. (In the US the term lecturer has a different meaning, often being a teaching only role.) It might be worth also considering the Teaching Fellow to Professor of Teaching route > th-cam.com/video/R88Mwn16WCI/w-d-xo.html 😀
