How to grow Hardy Kiwi

    The smooth skinned green fruit are the size of grapes and taste like a sweet tropical kiwi without the fuzzy skin. But this hardy kiwi has the added benefit of being able to set fruit without a cross-pollinator so you only need one plant making it ideal for small gardens or landscapes.

    To anyone growing Issai kiwi, you will not get much fruit if any without a male vine nearby. I have two Issai kiwi vines that have flowered profusely for the past two years. I have only gotten one fruit that didn't even make it to maturity. I finally purchased a male vine in hopes of getting some fruit.

      Issai is self fertile, meaning you don't need both. If getting blooms and no fruit, lack of polinators likely the issue

    Its been over 10 years since I've planted. Im almost positive its the common var. Arguta. The vines have been ripening fruits on the vine through the late summer and into the fall where they start to ripen all together and get sweeter. Towards the end of the season, if you catch them at just the right ripeness, they have the same taste and consistancy of the fuzzy ones. The fruits all get tastier and sweeter toward the end of the season. (Has anyone had this long ripening period happen with their vines?)
    Im in zone 6 and they're planted against a south facing wall on a trellis.
    Be prepared for a lot of pruning, be patient and make sure the male has room to grow. Fruiting should start by the 4th year.

    I’ve had my kiwi plants for over five years with no fruit. I have two females and a male. I wondered if I was doing something wrong. Glad to know it can take up to 9 years for fruit.

    Could you give an estimate of the yields of this type of kiwi with a pollinator? And does the fruit ripen all at once? Is it possible to use the same pollinator for two different varieties of female that would stagger the overall harvest? Any suggestions on varieties for that scenario would be a big help, thank you!

    Pests.. I have weevils that like to bite the flower stems off of mine. I counter them with a flashlight at night.. Next to that, almost no pest problems.

    I learned a lot from this. I have a plant I planted it about 3 years ago. It looks to be budding little fruits. I’m not sure if it’s male or female or if it will produce fruit on its own . How can i tell?

    I have read that if you over fertilize the plant it will create a lot of foliage growth but a lack of blossoms. Knowing you will not get fruit from some until year 2 or more can you over fertilize to improve growth of the plant for those first year(s) to cut down on that waiting time before fruiting begins?

  • @Luke-xx1ri
    @Luke-xx1ri 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    These kiwi grapes can handle granite soils,slow as there getting a lot of water thanks to the hectic rains in Australia nsw at present.I never fertilise them and there taking a bit of time to establish 2yrs in myself.granite soils most likely hinder the root grow but there got great potential.this yr I’m going to do some cutting’s see how I go😜

    A kiwi plant started growing in a planter on the porch. I have a female kiwi growing up around the planter from down below. Will the one growing accidentally in the planter definitely be female? FYI I don’t have a male. I got 2 plants that were supposed to be a male and female and turned out they were both female ( 8 yrs!) Tons of flowers, starts fruit, then drops not long after. I imagine it’s because I don’t have a male?

    I am in glasgow Scotland my kiwi has hardly grown much since I got it and the leaves didn't look very green. Could I have over fed it with nutrient?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Possibly but it’s more about the root system that maybe isn’t expanding. Over fertilization usually caused browning of the leaves. If the root system is compromised by disease or poor soil i.e. to wet, or to alkaline the plant will be stunted. On the other hand slow growth and yellowing leaves can be a symptom of under fertilizing.

    Does anyone know if hardy kiwi is affected by juglone. We have black walnut trees I'm wondering if they would survive.

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We generally don't recommend planting anything near black walnut trees. They tend to wipe out a lot of plants.

    Does the Issai produce as much fruit as most other varieties?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jay Lennah Yes, but to get that kind of production you need a male for cross pollination. Otherwise the crops are light.

    • @dickout123
      @dickout123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am still new to how this works. Does this also mean that the self-pollinating Issai can assist pollinating nearby female varieties in return.

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jay Lennah No it will set fruit that doesn’t have viable seed in so you might look at it as the fruit that it does set without crosspollination is sterile.

      Hardy Kiwi ‘Issai’ (Actinidia arguta)

  • @Autonomousgardener
    @Autonomousgardener 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this a plant that you think could be grown in a 10 cubic foot container? I am hoping to grow them on my balcony in a container that will be filled with worm casting with a worm tower. Thoughts?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We generally suggest only potting up by 2" from what the plant arrives in to start, just so it allows the roots enough time to spread out in the small pot and then increasing the pot size by another 2 inches once you notice roots coming out of the bottom of the drainage hole. Potting in too large of a container can cause the plant to struggle with putting out growth above the soil line.

      There are some varieties that will fruit without a male Actinidia arguta Issia and Silver lining. But with a male they fruit even heavier. Other varieties will on fruit without the male plant.
