When my grandfather passed at the beginning of this I inherited his 50-year-old solid gold 14k Italian made herringbone chain. It has a lot of sentimental value to me because I've never not seen him not wearing it. It wasn't in pristine condition but considering it's 50 years old I can't be mad at that. I love this chain and as delicate as it is it's held up really well over those years. It had to be repaired but luckily it was right behind the clasp so it's minimally noticeable and it couldn't have happened in a better location.
I've had them. They are so classy and pretty, I do think it's all in the way you take care of your jewelry. I'm not sure I would buy another one thou, it seems like I remember it pulling my hair.
I was in high school back in the 90's when gold was something like $500/oz so a LOT of people had gold chains back then. Herringbones looked great and they were a fairly inexpensive way to have a wide chain look...but it was pretty well known that they were a problematic chain that was easily damaged, and that it was easy to SEE the damage. Herringbones work for certain people who are really careful/aware/etc., but your average person should probably not own one.

The kinks might be why some jewelers now advertise there herringbone as flexible herringbone or something like that do you think getting a bigger size or a 10k herringbone might help against kinks?
Copped my 10k gold herringbone chain about 3 months ago.. Very Dope ass chain for my 1st one.. If u take care of it then you won’t have to worry about it getting a kink in it.. Don’t sleep in it and don’t shower with it.. I keep my shit shined up and the sun light bounces off it every time I step outside.. I copped it because a lot of people don’t mess with herringbone chains and most people (besides old heads) even know what it is... It does bite the hair on my neck sometimes. I get a lot of compliments on it though.. Very old school.. 😎 #Classic @JacoJe..
I love the herringbone but as soon as I held it and inspected it I knew right away what the pros and cons are. It looks nice but It’s not something that is wearable everyday. I wear mine for special occasions and take it off as soon as I get home and pack it properly and place it in it’s box making sure it is not folded. It just needs more care and caution. I’ve had mine for two years now and only wore it twice. No kinks.
My first chain I bought loved it 5mm 24" even though knowing the risk I had to get one and is my exclusive piece for dinners such like that. I have had it for a while and its fragile I don't recommend sleeping with it or showering with it be careful when layering your necklace it can flip a kink. I bought my boy one a few weeks ago I warned him how fragile..
Dido. My wife has a 30 year old heirloom herringbone and it look like it got hit by a tank. It never gets worn. They are a waste of gold if you ask me. On a side note 2 pac's herringbone did look great but he could afford to wear it a few times than be done with it.
I found your video going down a rabbit hole about a necklace I've worn on and off for at least 4 years that I found in an old box at my nana's, turns out the costume jewelry piece I thought it was is actually one of these. maybe I won't just chuck it into whatever drawer or pocket is closest anymore! surprisingly, it isn't kinked except for in one small spot! and I know Nana had it for at least a decade before I was given it.
Had a sterling silver herringbone necklace and bracelet for 10 years. Never had a problem and eventually gave them away when I transitioned to gold only. Although I know several people who had linked herringbones and wore them with no shame. I have to agree with you though. Herringbone is a lot of necklace for the gram weight and they look amazing. I remember seeing drug dealers in the 90’s with what had to be 15mm+ gold herringbones. Absolutely massive, but they kind of faded away. I wouldn’t mind having another one in 18k rose for a unique aesthetic.
I think it is the design of the link. Whether it is a costume jewelry herringbone or a 18k gold herringbone I have just not been able to wear them without a problem.
Could a chain that has the 925 silver mark on clasp still be fake? I was gonna buy a chain from a friend. Its a good sized flat curb for 25 dollars. Am i gettting a good deal or scammed. It does say 925
I use to an 10mm 16 “gold herringbone they are hard to find for and reasonable price and if you can give an visual on mm like it’s hard for me to picture mm in actual size from pictures like how big is 7mm what could I compare it to for an visual
Is it possible that the chain in this video is hollow and maybe causing kinks? I have a 24 inch 5mm herringbone chain that weighs 22g vs the 10g, stamped 14k Italy as well. Also have a hollow 22 inch 4mm rope that's only around 10g vs your solid ropes over 20g. Almost the same differences between the weights between the 2 makes it seem possible..
It’s not hollow but most likely just a little thinner. Most herringbones are like this though. That’s why I said it. Thicker/heavier the chain the better always
@@jacoje now that I look at it more, it does seem to be a thickness difference. I agree heavier is always better. I wouldn't mind swapping the herringbone towards another rope or a franco tbh. They aren't my favorite either
I bought a herringbone silver bracelet a months ago but what happened to me is that I wanted to cut it 'cause it was a little bigger for my wrist. I left it in my local and trustless jewellery but they cut it more than it needed. They tried to fix it, however if you look at it, it seems messed in the part they "repaired". So disappointed about it.
I loved my herringbone back in the 90’s it’s the chain I’m wearing in my profile pick. The problem was that if you slept in them the kinked up hella. I’ve kept that chain in the drawer for the last 25+ years because of the kinks.
I found this video extremely helpful, thanks Jacoje! I was wondering what your thoughts are on flat snake chains? Do you find them more durable then herringbone?
Can you please tell me what is the best Italian jewelry store or website that sells good quality gold. I really want to buy good quality gold necklace for my mom but I feel like the jewelry stores here are not good quality!
had a really nice herringbone that my mother passed down to me. super expensive chain, and i wasn't aware of how fragile they were and it got kinked in multiple places. such a shame.
Where is the best places in Europe to buy a nice gold chain would you say? Like would I be able find a nice gold chain in Germany, Poland, Austria, Or the Czech Republic? because I am traveling over there next summer. So I was wondering if I could find a nice gold chain from one of those countries?
I've had bad experiences with them too. Had a silver one before, it laid funny when wearing, then one day it broke. Won a "14k gold one" at a give away. It had kinks in it and actually tarnished. I question how real the gold one was?
Yo jacoje, whats the difference in strength between hollow and solid? Its clearly weaker if we compare the same size piece, but would a 10 gram hollow piece have the same strength as a smaller 10gram solid piece considering they are the same weight?
I have a chain that looks exactly like yours in the video. I've had it for about 4 years and babied it like no other but last week a family member (14 year old) snapped it in half when she was looking at it. It was my fault, I should have known better. From what I hear there's nothing I can do about it, it's just scrap gold now. I'm still nauseous over it 😫 over $1k gone in a second
Solid video and very informative. I'm going to stick with getting a flat curb link instead. I love the style of the herring bone. But not worth the hassle and short life span.
I have herringbone necklace it’s so sensitive and I don’t use everyday i just use if I am wearing plain tshirt especially white shirt I love it and I never bring use to sleep over hahahahaha I am scared to deform😂
Love these chains I have a 14mm I got from a pawn shop probably 15yrs ago and I have my moms old school heavyduty 16mm. If you handle them with care and coil them up when your not wearing them they will last forever. If you kink them you can fix it enough to wear it all you have to do is cut out the kink remove the cut pieces on each end you will see one end will have almost a lattice end cut through the bottom where little holes are and you can slide the two ends together and the chain will be wearable again!!!

I had one back when I was like 13 I got a gold one for Christmas from my dad I had it for along time.
Very nice! Thanks for your input and recommendations on the care. I’m sure it’ll help a lot of people
I can’t find a herringbone bracelet for men anywhere! I want to bring it back
I love the herringbone but as soon as I held it and inspected it I knew right away what the pros and cons are. It looks nice but It’s not something that is wearable everyday. I wear mine for special occasions and take it off as soon as I get home and pack it properly and place it in it’s box making sure it is not folded. It just needs more care and caution. I’ve had mine for two years now and only wore it twice. No kinks.
diamond cut double curbs can look as good as resting neck pieces but finding them hammered thin enough is a real challenge.
I have a 14kt 6mm 24 inch herringbone and had it for 7 years and i sleep shower gym work rough and its still the same so idk anymore im confused
Do “snake” or square snake style links also have this problem?
I hand mine for like 5 years. Its just about how u take care of it
My first chain I bought loved it 5mm 24" even though knowing the risk I had to get one and is my exclusive piece for dinners such like that. I have had it for a while and its fragile I don't recommend sleeping with it or showering with it be careful when layering your necklace it can flip a kink. I bought my boy one a few weeks ago I warned him how fragile..
Do you think a smaller one would be as durable as a wider herringbone
What about a herringbone bracelet?
YES!! I remember the herringbone look alike you posted, I LOVED IT!! You gotta add it to your website 🙏🏽
Could you do a walk through of your work shop? I love the behind the scenes of jewelry
Can never beat the classics. The rope, Franco and Miami Cuban but props to all styles. Informative video indeed.
Very true. Some get more popular than others (ropes right now) but it remains the same
Dido. My wife has a 30 year old heirloom herringbone and it look like it got hit by a tank. It never gets worn. They are a waste of gold if you ask me. On a side note 2 pac's herringbone did look great but he could afford to wear it a few times than be done with it.
Agreed. Ya he made it iconic. He could’ve had 10 of them though and just switched them up lol
2 pac came to my mind right away to. Haha
Hello Jacoje, Do you have an Italian herringbone connect. I would like to see the quality and prices. Please reply as soon as you can.
Was gonna get one but changed my mind cause of this video, Thanks Jacoje!
Can you help me find a place online to purchase one pls
I feel like I'd get cut throat wearing these...its a shame.
Haha ya
@@kayj4504 thanks my d00d
Can you review the Diamond Studs you have from small all the way to the big ones ?
Could a chain that has the 925 silver mark on clasp still be fake? I was gonna buy a chain from a friend. Its a good sized flat curb for 25 dollars. Am i gettting a good deal or scammed. It does say 925
Or it mite be 825
I had the 10K 12mm one, it was $1500 though👎🏾 ($1700 w/ tax included). Got kinked up and I never took it in to get fixed
I use to an 10mm 16 “gold herringbone they are hard to find for and reasonable price and if you can give an visual on mm like it’s hard for me to picture mm in actual size from pictures like how big is 7mm what could I compare it to for an visual
You could compare it to a ruler
So if I have a broken 4mm herringbone, there's nothing I can do? I just have to sit in sadness with it?
Yea :(
What can I do with my old herring bone necklace that’s twisted?
How does it bend like that
I bought a herringbone silver bracelet a months ago but what happened to me is that I wanted to cut it 'cause it was a little bigger for my wrist.
How big is a 25 gauge herringbone?
Any chains that looks like this one without the same problems?
I have one of these and it has a couple kinks, but they're not noticeable when it's around my neck.
my jewler taught me a trick. take your chain lay it down flat on a table and roll a glass cup over it to get the kinks out and what not!!
I found this video extremely helpful, thanks Jacoje! I was wondering what your thoughts are on flat snake chains? Do you find them more durable then herringbone?
MetalBenderAmoo i have this question too
It's trash. *It's complete Trash.* My sentiments are the same as you Jacoje I have respect for the craftsmanship but that's all.
What is the big difference between Italian and India Gold Franco chains? Or does it even matter??
I think I'm finna get one anyways. It seems the only time you're at risk is while sleeping. So just dont sleep in it and you're ok
Hey Braden if I dm’d you about wanting to purchase a herringbone, would you be able to sell?
Yeah the chains look good but I wouldn't be able to wear it kinked like that.
Seems to me that the thinner it is, is more definitive than how wide it is as to if it kinks or not.
can you unravel a herringbone chain that has twisted itself into a rope looking chain???
Where is the best places in Europe to buy a nice gold chain would you say? Like would I be able find a nice gold chain in Germany, Poland, Austria, Or the Czech Republic? because I am traveling over there next summer. So I was wondering if I could find a nice gold chain from one of those countries?
I used to have one when I was younger, that thing would get a twist and it was done constantly twisting n messing up hate them
Which brand is that so smooth?
Can you do a quick video on the braclets and earring you have especially the moon cut braclet and diamond cut earrings rose gold
I've had bad experiences with them too. Had a silver one before, it laid funny when wearing, then one day it broke. Won a "14k gold one" at a give away. It had kinks in it and actually tarnished. I question how real the gold one was?
i have a 22inch 12mm so far no kinks but my smaller heringbones kinked so i was told go bigger. so far its ok.
Yo jacoje, whats the difference in strength between hollow and solid? Its clearly weaker if we compare the same size piece, but would a 10 gram hollow piece have the same strength as a smaller 10gram solid piece considering they are the same weight?
hollow is less durable, easy to bend, its the type of chain/bracelet you dont wanna go to sleep with it on
Is there any possible way I could get a herringbone? Will they ever be up on your site again?
Ok because my bracelet lose 2 links nd i know it cnt be fixed and its my favorite bracelet they are hard toncome by
I have a chain that looks exactly like yours in the video.
I have a herringbone bracelet - what a beautiful mess. When I wore it, it was fine. It got all knotted up when I laid it down in the jewelry box.
Solid video and very informative. I'm going to stick with getting a flat curb link instead. I love the style of the herring bone. But not worth the hassle and short life span.
I’ve litterally gotten 1.5 mm rope chain fixed before
Can you make a video how Herringbone chains are made?
What is that pendant in the top left picture, almost looks like an airmax plus. If u did that then u did an amazing job 🙂
Nvm not an airmax plus but still dope af just out of curiosity can anyone tell me the price? 😮
Wait are Snake Chains the same as Herringbone Chains??
Can you put a pendant on it without it kink?
Thank you for this video, i was considering it but I don't think it's made for me. Maybe as an anklet because I love the look too much !
I have herringbone necklace it’s so sensitive and I don’t use everyday i just use if I am wearing plain tshirt especially white shirt I love it and I never bring use to sleep over hahahahaha I am scared to deform😂
Bro you are super honest dats why he's ya personal jeweler
Waow very insightful thank you! Been wanting one of these, they look so nice. After watching this, change of heart ❤️ thank you!
I live in Germany how do i pay ? Prices are listet in $.
I would pay arround 500$ on your Website..
How much would you charge to ice out a bezel?
Herringbone has never knotted up I don't care about the kink. I sleep in my every night foe 21 years
How to order here in the Philippines ?
