1977 was quite an interesting year. Had a specific memory of The Spy Who Loved Me, where, at 12 years old, I was walking with a couple of friends and found a $10 bill in an intersection, of which I bought the film's soundtrack on cassette. 👍
Wish my 70s Black Beauty went back together. It was junked but cleaned it up with nothing to lose. That long handle makes it impossible to recrimp and reassemble. My kingdom for gillettes original tools to make it possible. Feels like it would be an amazing razor.
A lot of the fancy badger brushes such as a couple of the Simpson I own, actually suggest to paint the lather on; not do the circular motions. I say its your shave, paint it on if you want (nothing wrong with it)! This tribute was amazing, one of my favorite parts in all of film, is hands down every Bond intro!

Nice tribute! I’ve read, and my barber also told me making small circles can make knots in the brush hairs, or twirl them around each other leading them to get pulled out. But I’ve also learned that that issue is mostly with horse hair brushes. In the end, with how many brushes we have, they will last a lifetime anyway, so I guess people should do what they think works/feels best. I haven’t found any difference in the lather from one or the other technique. I usually go with the lateral movement instead of circles. Specially since I bowl lather.

For opening theme tunes I'd say Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and Nancy Sinatra's You Only Live Twice have got to be right up there 👍
Great video. Sometimes I’m at a loss for what to use in my next shave. So I emulated your tribute shave the best I could. I used a 1972 black beauty short handle, the Wilkinson stick, German Wilkinson blade and my Ken Surfs badger brush. That was the first time for the Wilkinson stick. Wow, great lather and slick too. Sorry to say no vintage watches were present for my shave.
This is a great review, Ken. I really enjoyed every second of it. The Spy Who Loved Me was the first Bond film that I saw at the pictures and it's still my favourite. I was eight years old and my older brother took me to see it at the local cinema in Sidcup. What kid of 8 couldn't be in be love with a Lotus Esprit that doubled as a submarine? When I watch it these days, I find myself admiring the lines of Barbara Bach and Caroline Munro a little bit more than those of the car. Please keep these James Bond tribute shaves coming. Hmmmm 1977? I had just returned to Ohio from Angola and beginning a new Engineering gig with NCR. I had an old Norelco of Dad's, plus a Gillette Knack & also the Trac II demo handle from college. It was Barbasol or nothing. Finished up with Drakkr, Kanon, or some Avon stuff in a bullet-shaped bottle. I recently found an old pack of original English Wilkinson Swords from the late 70's. Compared to todays' version, they were much thicker and a little less smooth.

As far as I learned by reading (I am new in this world and learning from you and others) circular strokes on the brush are bad for the brush and some manufacturers will explicitly mention it. Linear strokes, like you saw your dad do are good for the brush and will increase its life. Your dad knew his shaving and passed it on properly. I love your videos!

Certainly one of my favorite Bonds. It does have my all time favourite cinematic scene. Bond in Cairo in the alley way just before he enter the house. A string instrument is plucked at the same time. That Frame frozen in my mind. Great shave Ken, going to get a Tabac stick now. All the best Ken.
Great video I have all the bond movies on special edition DVD, nice shave sir that razor looks awesome I always paint the lather on if I do the swirls I get cramp in my hands my thumb locks I spent 20 years in the welding industry and using hammers and grinders and other tools it has a lasting effect so it is easier for me to paint it on I swirl it is painful take care and enjoy your day 😀

Will be interesting to see how you find it (stay away from the Bic chrome platinum though!).

Nicely compiled video Ken. Nice to see the Floris get a run out. Interesting to hear your wife isn't a fan of the 89. It took me a good few tries of the 89 samples before finally winning me over.
I have the arko shave stick with the plastic twist tube and i really like the application method of these sticks.. I guess it is a bit weird, like rubbing deodorant on your face but it is simple and convenient. If i had to take a soap for travel itd be a stick.
Ken, you are doing it right, making straight strokes (up/down, left/right) with your brush instead of making swirls. If you check the instructions of Simpson's brush makers, that's exactly what they say is the correct way of using brushes. They do not recommend swirling motions. 👍🏻
Ken you HAVE to try the One Blade (safety razor not electric). I purchased the “Core” because it is on sale for only $20 so I figured why not. Anyways, it’s incredible, you should seriously do a video on it, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised like I was
Great video and shave. Shaving sticks seem useful, I guess I'd prefer a Wilkinson stick over an Arko stick because of what I've read about Arko's scent.
Great shave and great video Ken. I was 2 weeks old when this movie was released and it was awesome when I finally got to see it years later when I was old enough. Tried the Gillette Wilkinson Sword Saloon Pack blades for the first time today and I liked those far better than the Chinese version. Much more comfortable.

As usual, great video Ken. I could have sworn I read years ago that you should stroke the brush like you are painting and not to do it in circles because it also increases the chance of the hairs falling out of the brush. I could be wrong though.
Q: I never put brushes to soak into the water so the edge of the handle is the waterline. Does that not affect the glue of the brush? I suppose it would affect the handle if it were wood.
I love these tribute shaves! The Spy Who Loved Me is an amazing movie indeed. Looking forward to that Moonraker tribute, because the movie takes place down here in Brazil, so it will always have a special place in my heart. I love, love, love this video right down to the watch! I did think that a Hawaiin shirt would have also gone with the trend, and for heaven sakes Ken no bell bottoms! Really? AC/DC did a phenominal version of "Live and Let Die" that you just have to hear. My take on Ming Shi the 2000S is a great razor, the 3000S is pretty amazing for only $8. Of the 2 the 3000S is better and it sort of looks like a Gillette Slim Adjustable. The closest shave I ever got was from a Ming Shi 3000S and a Dorco st-301 blade! Honest.

I can't seem to get a decent shave with a safety razor. I have a 60s era Gillette safety razor and a more recent Merkur, good quality shave soaps and creams, I have used 4 or 5 different brands of razors and I still get cut and burned. When I use a bic disposable, trac 2, hydro 5 or mach 3 with original Barbasol, I never get cut or burned. I'm following exactly what you do. What am i doing wrong? Please help.

Ken, you are doing it right, making straight strokes (up/down, left/right) with your brush instead of making swirls. If you check the instructions of Simpson's brush makers, that's exactly what they say is the correct way of using brushes. They do not recommend swirling motions. 👍🏻

Great shave and great video Ken. I was 2 weeks old when this movie was released and it was awesome when I finally got to see it years later when I was old enough. Tried the Gillette Wilkinson Sword Saloon Pack blades for the first time today and I liked those far better than the Chinese version. Much more comfortable.

As usual, great video Ken. I could have sworn I read years ago that you should stroke the brush like you are painting and not to do it in circles because it also increases the chance of the hairs falling out of the brush. I could be wrong though.

Q: I never put brushes to soak into the water so the edge of the handle is the waterline. Does that not affect the glue of the brush? I suppose it would affect the handle if it were wood.

My take on Ming Shi the 2000S is a great razor, the 3000S is pretty amazing for only $8. Of the 2 the 3000S is better and it sort of looks like a Gillette Slim Adjustable. The closest shave I ever got was from a Ming Shi 3000S and a Dorco st-301 blade! Honest.

I can't seem to get a decent shave with a safety razor. I have a 60s era Gillette safety razor and a more recent Merkur, good quality shave soaps and creams, I have used 4 or 5 different brands of razors and I still get cut and burned. When I use a bic disposable, trac 2, hydro 5 or mach 3 with original Barbasol, I never get cut or burned. I'm following exactly what you do. What am i doing wrong? Please help.
