      Nolan was working on the script for TEN YEARS. He's not some connect the splosions with stupid plot about Family to make people get emotional type screenwriter hack. He says his way of working is to start a script - then every time he encounters a problem - Go back to the very beginning and start again and try to get a little bit further than last time. I'm sure most Hollywood action scripts are just set piece set piece set pice set piece - then try to join them together later with rhetorical dialogue that sounds good for trailers.

      Sator was lied to about where the algorithm was, forcing him to drive back through the event to see where it went. He finally does see that it went into inverted TP's car, so he knows that if the event is reverted, the car will unflip, drive backwards to the freeport, TP will get out and revert with Ives and team. There is a window of time where the car is just sitting outside with the algorithm in the back seat. He realizes this and tells his men to simply drive there and pick it up.

      Yeah I felt the same way I think it’s cause they were being cinematic with the car chase in the beginning. If they would have left him counting to 3 but made the first chase slower and closer to the Freeport car crash it would’ve made more sense

    • @Segregationist
      @Segregationist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      They are doing a temporal pincer, so basically after Sator interrogated TP in the turnstile room he went to find the algorithm piece in the glovebox but since TP is lying, it's not there so Sator jumps to the moving SUV to go back to when TP was throwing the orange box, and then he saw uninverted TP throwing the algorithm piece to the inverted TP's car, so by inversion logic in this movie, I assume one of Sator's man was called by inverted Sator telling him that the algorithm piece was in the car that TP was using. So sator already got a hold of the algorithm piece before he chased uninverted TP and burned/freeze inverted TP's car.

      The Protagonist didn't know who was in the Saab, it was an attempt to get the Capsule away from Sator as much as possible. When inverted Protagonist goes in the Saab, you can actually see him look in the backseat, seeing the Capsule there. Sator told his team to go get the Capsule from the Saab. He most likey told the driver of the Mercedes. 4:14 you can see that the Driver there is actually not inverted, we see that he doesn't have an Oxygen Mask. And because of the Interragation scene, they have the technology to reverse the audio. 6:39 You can hear Sator tell his team that the Capsule is at the Saab.

    • @christian11111
      @christian11111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Interesting point, I hadn’t given it much thought but your right it is strange. Thinking about it now though makes a little more sense than my initial response to it. At the time the SUV is “behind” the protagonist in forward time we view it as chasing, however in inverted time Sator was trying to cut them off rather than chase them since they had the algorithm piece, so the movements are strange but its basically just what you get with a vehicle traveling inverted trying to cut off a vehicle traveling backwards. Either way one direction will be chasing while the other will be blocking/cutting off. So your right it looks weird but I wouldn’t say it’s actually wrong, at least I don’t think so lol.

    • @Mastario
      @Mastario 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@christian11111 But when you are trying to cut off someone you either invade their lane at an angle, or be in front of them and slam the breaks or you could also try ramming their rear tire, in this case front tire, to do a Pit manuever, none of these seem to be attempted but instead we see the diver maneuvering just to stay in front of the movement of the car (which in this case is the rear of the car) then after a while the SUV just speeds up, turns around and completely ignores them on the way back, which completely opposes the intent of cutting them off.
      Also, without even talking about how the SUV anticipated all the moves of the BMW, which were actually caused by the BMW trying to avoid the SUV.
      Although, having read your comment, I think maybe the SUV driver did try to slam the breaks on them to rear end them, but due to the nature of them being reversed, the SUV driver found it very hard to position the SUV, gave up and couldn't come up with a better solution to stop them???
      What the SUV should've done is to try the pit maneuver by hitting the BMW's front tire with the front of the SUV. This would've giving us a more interesting shot in forward time as we would see the SUV moving in reverse but with its front side towards the front of the BMW, trying to ram their front tire from the sides.

    • @Blader2600
      @Blader2600 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Mastario Actually both Sator and TP vehicles are chasing each other depending on the perspective. In forward time its clear enough Neil is being chased by backwards SUV but in Sator's perspective he just figured out the algorithm is in the Saab so he is finished and must escape.
      Therefore that when the SUV breaks the mirror is an attempt to fool TP and Neil because he switched to reverse gear and drove back down the highway to the freeport.
      i.e. Sator chasing TP in forwards time is actually Sator's escape in reverse time.

      @@Blader2600 I agree that both could be seen as chasing each other, but to me it makes much more sense that they would do this facing each other instead of back to back.
      I just watched a video of a police chase where the cops do the pit maneuver and played it on reverse, and if you just imagine the back of the chased car is the front, it looks so much better and makes more sense for both chases.
      It's just odd that you would position your car in front of another with your back to it and anticipate all its moves. Instead of positioning your car behind the other car (reverse front) and try to ram it. And from the protagonists perspective it would look like they are chasing a car going in reverse but that it's actually taking swings at them with it's rear (reverse front)

Someone suggested on another video that he keeps going back in time and picks it up from the truck but that doesn't make sense because then it wouldn't have been there when they first got it from the truck. So it has to have been with inverted TP in his flipped car, right?

    • @Kabitu1
      @Kabitu1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      It doesn't matter to him to have it in the past, he needs to have it in the future. So reverse Sators job is to find out where it will be when he begins his journey, then communicate it to his goons so they can pick it up. Then from his perspective it needs to be handed back to TP and put back in the vault in the security truck, those are the counter-intuitive steps he has to take to steal it in forwards direction.
      It's never in the flipped car; the flipped car reverse-crashes onto the road, then the plutonium is thrown into it. In the future it ends up in the backseat of the parked silver car on the docks. Once they know that, Sators people just have to wait for inverted TP to bring it back there, park it, and walk into the turnstile, then they can pick it up in the future.

    It's brilliantly executed, but the logic is broken. Smartest people in the world don't understand it because it breaks its own rules no matter which order you play it.
    Nolan's a great filmmaker but don't let him gaslight you into thinking the film's genius just because he broke logic so bad no one can understand it. Genius is when the impossibly complex suddenly becomes clear. This is just gaslighting. I love the movie, but it's utter nonsense.
    Before you ask:
    1. Sator's car (inverted) spawns out of a crash, driverless, with Kate in the back. Sator (inverted) then jumps into the inverted car and resumes control. This makes exactly as much sense as if a regular car spawned out of a crash and was hijacked by its driver mid-transit.
    2. Sator's inverted lighter ignites inverted engine fuel, which should freeze its surroundings and burn only the protagonist. Instead, it freezes only protagonist and burns everything else. Not to mention, even if the heat is inverted into freezing, it should be a mirror amount of damage to the Protagonist, and yes, extreme freezing is just as gruesome as extreme heat, freezing shouldn't be a safety buffer for him. Not to mention, the air itself is not inverted, so just as he can't function without inverted air, the inverse fire should be equally untenable.
    3. Protagonist sees inverted silver car spawn out of a crash, with a driver. Inverted silver car drives up neatly between inverted Sator and normal Protagonist. Now this is the first and second time Protagonist has ever seen an inverted car, and Sator seems to be cooperating with it, and thus far, Protagonist assumes that Sator is the only one doing time shenanigans this overtly, (he's later surprised that TENET has their own inversion chambers). So by Protagonist's account, he should assume that inverted silver car is working for Sator, just as he still assumes that the inverted soldier at the Freeport was working for Sator. Throwing the algorithm into the Silver car and sending Sator an empty case would then be a minor inconvenience for Sator, at best. Suppose Protagonist intended to then chase Silver car, using it as a buffer between him and Sator. Fair enough. What'd be even more fair enough is if Protagonist just dropped the algorithm between his knees, sent the case, and kept the algorithm right there with him rather than attempt a simultaneous trick-shot into a moving car that is 99% likely to be an enemy.
    4. Protagonist proceeds to step into the same exact car, and not stop for two seconds to check if, maybe, the algorithm he just chucked into a Sator-inverted car is in this perfect identical Sator-owned car right next to Sator's building. For all he knows, Sator's goon didn't notice the algorithm being chucked, and the whole gang then ditched the vehicle not realizing what was in it. Though Protagonist has a lot on his plate, so I'll give him an out. Still weird he doesn't even raise an eyebrow at the car being so identical to the one he just threw his mission into.

      the logic isn't perfect but it's still genius... completely original story and incredible filmmaking... this movie got in my head like few others have done -- and clearly it got to you too :)

      @@shizzyfinn It did get to me. I really like it. But I disagree with the general assumption that it's genius for being impenetrably nonsensical. Feels like rewarding writers for doing less work; regardless of how much I love the premise and fight choreography and soundtrack.

      Hey, I'm just trying to understand exactly what it is you're saying here.. could you specify, with a screen time in the video that shows it, which car it is that spawns out of a crash?

      @@foundfindfinding5377 Sator's inverted car drives backwards into a busy intersection. Protagonist has to hurry to rescue Kat from the inverted vehicle before it reaches the intersection; implying it's going to "crash". However, this being an inverted vehicle, the crash it's bound for is _in the vehicle and Sator's past._ Meaning, from Sator's POV, the vehicle spawns out of the crash, and barrels down the street without a driver and Kat alone in the back seat, Sator then drives up in his getaway vehicle and jumps into the moving car to rejoin Kat and hold her hostage.
      Note that this part of the events is not shown from Sator's POV, because it doesn't make sense, but the film cuts around it and trusts that the audience will just blame their own confusion rather than calling the movie out.

      @@samwallaceart288 Ohhhh, yeah. Why would it start driving before he gets into the vehicle. I see your point. Big plot hole, bummer. Doesn't kill the movie by any means, but it definitely is a hole.
