My nonprofit is applying pro bono for a large US government economic development grant. Is there a method specific to USG grants for correlating desirable outcomes and size and varieties of pitches? Ask prior winners, ask elected/appointed officials, etc.? Or is it all seat of the pants? Also, how the heck do you work with Adobe Acrobat, required by the Feds? What a wonderful package of software...except if you use a Mac! How did _that_ happen? I have a hunch....
Hey Bob. Assuming the grant is through the US Economic Development Administration, those are big bear grants. We have done several. Make sure you are giving yourself plenty of time to apply. Build a relationship with the funder contact in the NOFO. You might consider forging a partnership with a local municipality to improve odds of winning. What does a grant writer typically charge? Is it like commission? Where you get a portion of funds they asked for? Or salary or hourly?

Great question. There are certifications out there, including one through the Global Grant Writers Collective, that I'm happy to send you more resources on if you're interested. More important than the paper is putting what you learn into practice, which is where most certifications fall short. What interests you about freelance grant writing and starting your own business?
