How to Earn a Pigeon or Doves Trust: Part 2 | Eating from The Hand

  • This video is the second in a series on earning a pigeons trust. Earning a pigeons trust can be a long challenging, stressful process, but it doesn’t have to be. In this series I’ve laid out the methods, tips and tricks I used to develop the relationship I have with Tallulah, who started out as an untamed, terrified of humans, adult bird. I’ve set up this series to walk you step by step from a new birds arrival to being well established. We’ll cover getting the new bird into the cage, getting close, feeding them without scaring them, how to convince them to come to you, having them voluntarily let you take them in and out of the cage, and activities to do together to help you be seen as a human they want to spend time with.
    In this video we cover; How to get your bird from eating while near you, to eating single seeds from your fingers. This video lays the groundwork for future training, and helps them become more comfortable with interacting with human hands.

    Might be good to add that some pigeons become very territorial of their cage, and feeding them in the cage might not always work. My girl went from being terrified at first to getting more comfortable and confident with me, at which point she used to bite and slap any time I got further into the cage than the very edge, or got too close to her in the cage. She's only started letting me into her cage fully in the last week! I overcame this by feeding through the bars of the cage to start with, then outside of the cage on her perch, and then finally in her cage. It's always interesting to hear how different every pigeon is!

    • @animalpeople880
      @animalpeople880  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Very true. Tallulah also reacted aggressively for a period of time in the beginning, wing slapping, biting the whole works. For us I found that feeding her with the cage just open enough to have me holding her dish just inside the door, and with the dish there to distract her from my hand, was adequate to stop the behaviour after a short period of time. As she got more used to excepting food like that she became lest territorial/fearful and the aggression ceased. For people with brand new birds I’d like it if we could normalize interacting at the doorway right from the beginning, since getting them in/out, feeding, watering and cage cleaning will all happen there so if that can be normal from day one my hope is to mitigate territorial behaviour as much as possible. I do intend to make videos discussing aggression more directly in the future though. Well done on being allowed in the cage! That is a great accomplishment, especially since you had to work through aggression to get there.

      My male slaps and bites too but his situation isn't really a territorial thing so much as it's more of him establishing his personal bubble. Sometimes he will tolerate me invading his personal space and I can scratch the back of his head but usually he just let's me do things in his cage. When I feed and water them, he will walk over and start trying to eat or drink before I can set the bowl down lol. But when he forces me to do it, I will pick him up and move him. When I grab him, he settles down and accepts the movement (though he's still not thrilled with it lol) and then when I set him down, he just gives me a dirty look, walks away, and just sits there with the female as I do whatever I'm trying to get done. Usually it's cage cleaning. They will sit there and watch me. Sometimes, they groom each other or themselves. Sometimes they'll even come over to be nosy and see what I'm doing. I try to let them move freely and get out of the way on their own because I know that manhandling them isn't the best way to earn their trust BUT when I DO have to pick them up, I try to be quick and gentle with it. This has helped with making them more accepting of being picked up against their will. Like I said, they still don't like it but they have learned that it's going to be very brief and painless.

    Turns out I basically did most of this process naturally with my local feral pigeons who I like to go out and feed every day. Of course not all of them are super comfortable yet but since they are feral most of them learn to trust pretty fast.
    I started sometime this summer with just gently throwing out or dropping some food in my vicinity. After a while I began sitting on a low stone wall and placing food near me. Soon I could hold out my hands with food and as long as my hands didn't move much and stayed flat on the stone surface many of them felt okay with eating out of my palm, pecking at my fingers and stepping on my hand to get a good comfortable spot.
    Now there are at the very very least over five pigeons who trust me enough to fly up and land on my hands, arms and a few times even my shoulders or head. My best buddy is a beautiful grey, white and brown dude who almost always flies to my arms as soon as he spots me and impatiently hops from hand to hand and pecks at my fingers while I dig in my small fabric bag for the food. When I'm lucky he's also comfortable with getting some gentle pets but I don't see him as often as other pigeons who don't trust me as much so I don't get to try often. I do see him fairly regularly on some sort of chimney or vent on the roof of an apartment building straight across from my balcony though. It's not close enough for him to see me but perhaps that is good since we have a cat and a net around the balcony so she doesn't fall since she likes exploring places she shouldn't.
    My best buddy has an arch nemesis too which is my second most comfortable buddy, a dark grey almost black smaller dude with recognisable light grey around his eyes. They are very grumpy at each other and whenever they both show up I have to physically keep them apart, often getting slapped in the face by their wings when they attempt to attack each other. They don't fight on the ground, only when they're on me, so I try to make sure both don't get on me at the same time. My guess is that they're either fighting over the food or over me. 😅 So- if I ever do get a pet pigeon I am not getting two guys.

She is so affectionate and will not leave my side , very adorable but I start to worry about her. I make sure she has supplements and the best care possible . She was rescued as I found her on the roadside injured and covered in mites . Now she has my entire home to fly around and has bonded with me ❤️

    A wild pigeon, like the ones you see under the highway overpass, are much more difficult to tame than the domesticated ones, which are often deliberately bred less intelligent. Its called dumbing down. They are much easier to tame.

She will also eat out of my hand readily and will peck at single seeds held up, but she will peck at my hand and squeak/chirp at me when I try to pet her or even when I hold up food. I really appreciate you videos. I am a long time animal lover and have had many birds throughout my life. My niece needed a home for 2 pigeons and I was excited because I was considering getting some. They are White/blueish-grey with one having some tan and green, Oriental Frill and beautiful birds. I am also thinking they are male and female as one is confirmed to have laid an egg while the other is bigger, more vocal, and does the figure 8 while focused on the other one. I am not 100% sure yet aside from the one egg that was laid. They aren't very tame as she didn't work with them enough yet. However they don't freak out when I walk by the cage but no where near trusting me but it has only been a few days. I tried the holding the food bowl but they don't seem ready yet, instead I am trying to find the sweet spot to sit near them while eating until they are comfortable.

    Hi there! I don't know if you'll see this, but I recently got a pigeon and have been binge watching your videos. They've been extremely helpful! I've been bonding with my pigeon slowly but surely. However I've come to a road block that I'd like to ask advice on if that's ok.
    So I got a pigeon about a month ago now and am very new to being a bird owner. I've been wanting a pigeon or dove for over 4 years so I've looked into pigeon care and general bird care as much as I can, whenever I can, learning as much as humanly possible. His name is King! (Idk if he's a boy or girl but I've just been saying he's a boy)
    As I've been bonding with him, I'm at at the step where you try to hand feed them a single seed, so when they eat it from you immediately, you can begin training and contact. I've got him to poke at the seed twice, and eat it once, so as I've kept trying to hold it for him after that (I stay still holding it for about 10-15 minutes and then give him his breakfast and dinner from my hand if he didn't eat the seed) he doesn't seem motivated to take the seed. I thought it might be because he isn't fully comfortable with my hands yet so I tried feeding it to him with my fingers just on the outside of his cage.
    As far as I can tell he's comfortable around my hands while I'm still because he'll stand there, preen, stretch, and even coo at me with his feathers and tail wagging, so I know he's comfortable with my hands so close to him. I've also managed to pet him softly on his chest now for small amounts of time
    When I've fed him from my hand he's very quick to eat from it, and I've gotten him to stand on my other hand as a perch while he eats. As comfortable as he is he doesn't take the seed. He'll come up to it, look at it very closely, and then stand there looking at. I noticed he likes corn a lot, so even as I tried feeding him that he does the same thing. I think he may just not know what's in between my fingers??? But I'd appreciate advice on what I can do about this.
    What can I do that will make him more comfortable to take a single seed from my fingers?
    Thank you for all the content you make about pigeons! I'm always eager to learn more 😊💛

    We've had our pigeon, Sweet Pea, for about 3 weeks now.. She was somewhat hand-rasied by someone with many pigeons, and we got her as a juvenile.. She is a generally calm bird and her personailty, trust, and training are blossoming more each day.
    She is still fairly fearful/aggressive towards hands, however, especially when food is involved.. She will tend to attack, coo, and "panic peck" at the seed, until she calms down and can calmly eat either from my palm or fingers.. What should I do when she attacks my hand(s)?? Should I pull away? Walk away for a period of time? Leave my hand still until she stops biting? Take the seed away for a moment, speak to her calmly that she's safe and slowly retry until she learns to take it gently? (I have settled on the last one of late for feeding time...)
    She is doing generally great with almost all other training we've been working on ("Step Up" "Step Down" "Summon!" "Shoulder"), and she LOVES deep, warm baths and being spritzed with warm water like Tallulah. She's been hanging/following me around and voluntarily riding me much more each day... She even tends to come and sleep/snuggle in the bed with me and/or my partner in the early mornings, but she will NOT let anyone touch her.
    If feel like she generally trusts me/us, but will avoid any direct hand contact.. pushing the matter triggers more intimidation cooing and increasingly aggressive biting.. I would obviously eventually like to be able to touch/handle/pet/pigeon-pant her, or simply get her in her cage when we need without a fight.. How do we go about making physical contact when even the slightest touch sets her off? .. (she also very clearly knows when I'm trying to be sneaky and try to get a secret pet in or a resting touch when she's eating or on me.. there's no fooling her! Haha)
    She's had more or less free run of our home for the past week, and I haven't really put her in her cage, mostly because she doesn't seem to want to go in on her own from my arm or otherwise and I hate having to handle her when she hates it too. ... But I'm certain avoiding handling her isn't helping, as when I need to, then the hands are always the scary thing again... Any help would be much appreciated. 🙏✌️🪶

    Love you and your bird! do you have any advices? i got my pigeon 5 days ago. i didn’t know how to approach him and my parents told me to slowly go in the cage with the hand and try to tell him that my hand is friendly. on the third day he made me touch his chest and his beak with one finger even though he was not that happy (he always stayed on his perch at the end of the cage. i could approach him with the hand and when he was done with that he could step back). I then discovered everything i was doing was wrong so i resetted all and i left him in his cage, doin his business while i was doing my things in the room (i have the cage in my bedroom). Yesterday while i was cleaning his cage he managed to fly out and fly around the room but since the window and the door were open i had to grab him “quickly” and now he’s absolutely scared of me. i mean, he does his preening thing while i’m in the room, in the evenings he sometimes loafs and sleeps while i’m there but whenever i get near the cage or i open the cage door he gets defensive, he puffs his neck and coos. Another important thing that worries me and does very often is that “goes crazy”: he started this on the third day he just jumps up and down between the first floor and second floor very quickly, goes near the walls and doors of the cage and starts climbing them, trying to fly away, he just flies onto the cage walls, walking inside his food and water bowls like it’s nothing, feels like he’s very scared and just wants to leave this place. I was thinking of letting him out on his 7th day but i don’t know… i feel he’s really scared of the whole place and of the people but i don’t know how to gain his trust! helpppp

    • @animalpeople880
      @animalpeople880  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! That does sound like a tricky situation. He could be “going crazy” as you said, due to fear, or he could be hyper/stir-crazy. It may be wise to let him out for exercise since he’s not warming up to you right away. Better he is active. If you do it the first time on a day, you will be home, such as in the morning on the weekend. It will give him the whole day to return to his cage by himself to get food and water. Likely, you won’t have to touch him to get him back in. And if he doesn’t go in, you can turn off the lights and pick him up (they have terrible night vision) and put him back in. Just be sure to bird-safe the room in advance so he’ll be safe wandering. When he’s loose if you hang out in that room doing something calm and every day, it will also give him a chance to approach you on his terms if he feels so inclined. Just be sure the food and water is in the cage so he will know where it is, the only potential exception is you can offer some to him, by hand, just don’t put a food dish outside of the cage or he’ll have no reason to go back. Good luck!

      I’m sorry to hear that, it’s hard not to get discouraged when you hit a stall in the progress. Has your bird been DNA tested or laid an egg? I’d be curious to know if it’s male or female. If it’s male it will likely take quite a bit of effort to deal with the aggression, it’s a really common issue, albeit not unsurmountable. Females can be aggressive as well, but it tends to be turned up to 11 in males comparably. I haven’t made a video on it yet, as I’ve had a tricky time laying out how I taught Tallulah not to be aggressive, but I’ll see if I can expedite the process.

    My pigeon trusts me so much he eats my hand. Yes, I meant to write that.

    Do you let the bird out of the cage during the time of bonding? I'm unable to find anything on it, thank you so much! 💜

      Letting pigeon out of the cage is essential. For mine, I find that when I take Nutella out of her cage into an unknown environment (e.g. my room), she is more interested in interacting with me. When she is in familiar territory, she is more distracted. I even took her out to the park today! :)

      @@zewt Adding onto this question, how would you go about putting them back in the cage? I currently always have my pigeon out because he enjoys it, but he's still terrified of me. I have to wrangle him up in order to get him back in which is scary. Any advice?

      @@CityOfWorm apology for not being detailed earlier. I did not let Nutella out in the first week I had her. The intention was to “home set” her to the new place (ie my place). During that first week, you would be feeding your pigeon in the cage so that will give you pigeon the impression the cage is where it will get its food (which is important for them to return). Thereafter, the first 2 weeks letting the pigeon out, always feed them in the cage and nowhere else. This will allow you to use meal time to get pigeon back to the cage. Hmmmm, I feel I should do a video on that myself lol. 😆

      @@zewt Ah thank you! That's probably the first mistake I made. I let him settle only for a day then allowed him to come and go as he pleased. However I'll most likely then keep him in his cage this week and see how he does. 🤔 Thank you! Yes you should make a video! It could help clear the waters for others! 😄

      @@CityOfWorm hope it helps with yours. Honestly, I don’t believe there is a one size fits all kind of shoes. Am sure there are many ways, my ways worked with mine and hope it’ll work with yours. I can tell you Nutella goes hack to the cage willingly but because I always feed her with my hands, she now refused to eat from the feeder in her cage, though she will go back to sleep. Lol. Tell me how yours go.

    my pigeon attacks me when I try to switch out the food and water... they don't run away they choose violence lol. They peck at anyone who gets too close to the cage too. And any hands in the cage will be destroyed. Around the cage, everyone is fine and the bird is calm. As soon as you get near the bars, watch out.
