    The Lock Joint is perhaps one of my favorite joints in woodworking, because it is super simple and super strong. With a glue surface area increase of 30% changing it from end grain only to a combination of end grain and face grain surface area makes this joint as strong as a dovetail when used correctly. I took it a step further and made a half blind lock joint to increase the surface area even more. This joint can be used in drawers to hide the end grain from the side and allows you to hide the drawer bottom groove without the use of an exterior drawer front.
    This is an involved method with the use of a new tool that you haven't seen me use very much. I hope you can try it in your shop now.

    Hals Wood Shop..(again.) KEEP TEACHING THESE JOINERY LESSONS. Ok so visiting home I discovered my father in 1940 high school shop class senior project used this blind lock joint on drawer fronts of a desk my mother still has. Shock to me that I knew he had built it but I was further impressed as I studied the joints on the back of the drawers ..dadoed in. And the underframe to hold the desk together, tongue and groove joints.. the four turned legs screw in and they have moved many times ( I am 64 ) The center piano hinge to writing area still works and only the slide out writing drawer tray has a crack. So I guess this is a joint that will hold over the test of time. No pocket screws here at all, just screws from underframe to carcass. From a proud son...learning all the time.( yes I have photos of the desk now. )

    Love the final mods on this joint. I may try this with plywood. Great tutorial! Thanks

    Thank you for clear details and tips on " batch cutting". This was one of your best explanations of a special technique. good filming for clarity. lets see more as you do this project, looks like an heirloom project. Hals Wood Shop.

      Thank you so much Hal. I am so glad you are getting good use from my efforts with this endeavor. I'm not used to some of these joints so it is really challenging me. Thank you!!!

    Nice joint. I too like the thicker look. I wonder how the gun case turned out (if you've made it yet, that is). I noticed on your sketchup drawing that the locking direction of the joint seemed (to me) to be on the wrong 2 sides. If you put a handle on it for carrying, that would be like the pull on a drawer, meaning the locking tongue would need to be parallel to that longer side. Parallel to the shorter side would allow it to be pulled apart if the glue failed. Of course, the glue wouldn't fail at these low stresses -- it just looked a little weird to me.

    Would 33% /33% /33% of the thickness on the groove side to 50% depth on the tongue side be an advantage or am I barking up the wrong tree , the end thickness was better and the grab of depth seemed to be stronger , it was a very coherent dream when it came to me but looked pretty legit

    Would this work well with plywood?

    • @rhwoodshop
      @rhwoodshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't see any reason why it would not work if you keep the longest tongue fairly thick

  • @russveinot5754
    @russveinot5754 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    on your sketchup diagram, you have the joint backwards. you wouldn't expose end grain to the front face of the drawer on half blind dovetails, would you?

    • @rhwoodshop
      @rhwoodshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the beauty of this joint. For my gun case I can put it however I like. Now for a drawer the engraving would show on the ends of the drawer front and not the side.

    • @rhwoodshop
      @rhwoodshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I meant end grain

    • @russveinot5754
      @russveinot5754 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      personally, I see the long sides of the front and back because of the opening direction. I am not saying either way is wrong, the case is still a "box" and boxes have fronts, backs, top, bottom, and sides. end grain is going to show somewhere on that type of joint. great video, never done this joint before. now I gotta build something with that joint:>)

    Why don't you just use the router bit made for this joint?

    • @ivanfreely6366
      @ivanfreely6366 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not everyone has that specific router bit. I like this idea because it means that I don't need to spend more money than I have to.

    • @rhwoodshop
      @rhwoodshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ivan took my answer. Lol. I decided to make this series to show anyone that you don't need expensive router bit sets or expensive tools to accomplish the same job that a table saw can do. However, if you have the bit then by all means use it, I just don't have the bit to demonstrate it. Lol. :) thank you so much for the suggestion. I'm sure people would like to that there is a bit that will accomplish the same task. :)

    I wonder what it would take to make that joint with a mitered conner so one would not see the engrain of the one side? Your next challenge I guess? ;o) LOL

    • @rhwoodshop

      Well rabbet joints have one shoulder only. The dado has two shoulders. I guess it could be called a half blind tongue and groove/dado joint.

      +Rock-n H Woodshop people can call things anything they want but its been called a half blind tongue and rabbit joint for at least a hundred years . it's a very old joint.
