It's a great looking truck. I noticed in your video that the suspension travel seems to be better than other trucks with a dead axle. This might allow the live axles a better chance to find grip than others with more rigid suspension. This truck and the hx520 are on my wish list just for the good looks but I have to save a bit more money in hard mode - or sell the very disappointing Derry 4520 (what a waste of game money). Great video once again. Thanks.
It sure is a great looking truck for sure. You're absolutely right, its suspension is alot better than the both of that CAT 6x6s. Ya they are way too much money for hardmode for me. I wish they were cheaper. Hold on to that Longhorn 4520, when you get tthe better engine in Maine, it will be worth it, but man thats long wait. I wouldnt blame you for selling.
The drop axle, while I don't love it, does stiffen up the suspension and make it more stable. As long as you avoid any extreme terrain, I've found it has come in handy from time-to-time. If you take something like logs it reduces the "sway" in a noticeable way.
Indeed sir, it does help with truck sway and is a good use case depending on terrain. In theory more wheels on the surface will provide more stability.
@@NProvince Great review as always, I enjoyed your thoughts on it. This was definitely one of the reviews I was most excited for (in addition to the HX you reviewed recently). Thank you!
well Nathan I don't know if you remember me but I am finally back and I haven't forgot about you. well finally I can watch one of your great videos! keep it up!
Been waiting for this one, good review. My only wish is they make the third axle powered. Thankfully there are mods that do this, so if you use this truck a lot, I'd recommend getting one of those. Also the sounds are some of the best. Hands down.
Well I'm glad i could finally get this one reviewed for you. Ya there are mods to do that and I think you can alter the XML files to give it power as well. However I cannot confirm that. Oh ya it does sound really good!
This is my go to workhorse. With the stock motor the economy is pretty good compared to other trucks. One advantage you did miss was the ability to run a crane and a bed and still tow a trailer, which is super helpful when you aren't sure what a job will need before you get there.
It is a workhorse for sure. I’m surprised I didn’t mention that combination. I might’ve left it out because I think low saddle is a better option for multiple reasons, but having that said combo you mentioned is very advantageous
It's me again, great video as always, thinking adding this truck and season 9 to my game because I got a little extra money, big engine is really enticing lol :)
thank for doing the western star! i was looking for this truck on your channel for a while and thought to comment and ask for it. I completely agree that this truck should be in the heavy duty class of trucks, but the heavy winch is nice
Im thankful a lot of trucks have been modded and changed or have tweaks i wrote to saber about having an option to remove the dead axel or an option where you can add same tyres to it which might help but the only solution are mods especially few modders who modified the dead axel to a working or fixed axel especially bartelbi mod for the Westernstar 49x is kickass he's completely changed the physics of the truck 😱
Ya quite a few modders have done some nice changes and additions. I wish we could just remove that axle, it would make really change the truck. Im not necessarily a mod user right now, but perhaps I will in the future.
Hello Nathan, I came here to hear your review about the WS49X. I must say I'm trying to love this truck but most of the left I'm disappointed. Since it's a paid DLC I would like to use it as much as possible but it'very often comes to be my last choice in many circumstances. There are many trucks in the game I had difficulties before, but now using them with lot of fun (thinking about the Twinsteer as an example). This one I really can't have fun.... It struggles in many situations and I have to reach a lot of power, and always AWD on with big consumption for a little to no result. For example, I'm having better results in lots of areas with the simple Freightliner 114SD. I don't even understand how you can obtain these performances in your video with this truck despite my 1800+ hours in SR... You're a GOAT really... Thanks for your always interesting and very informative videos.
So If you see what Im doing on the video is loading up its rear axles with weight; either with a semi trailer or Long logs. If you're pulling hitch trailers around, you're actually causing more harm than good. You want the weight your pulling to be carrying weight. I explained this alot of my mudrunnin tips video and other videos on semi trailers. Next I would get the UOD2s on there or the OMD3s JAT (for Stability). I mentioned the differences on my Jat Review for this. Next, high gear with it max engine is gonna do wonders, however when in doubt, DIFF lock it and use principles on terrain navigation that i mention in the mudrunnin tips video. Diff lock with AWD active is crazy powerful especially with good tires and weight driving traction into the surface. For balance concerns you can use your semi trailer to create angles to prevent from tipping. I have a video on that as well. I hope these things make sense. I can link videos if you cannot find them on the channel! The 49X is really a nice truck once you get used to it. 1800 hrs is alot!
@@NProvince Hey Nathan, thanks for your answer. Don't worry everything makes total sense for me. I will make multiple tries again with this truck, and also try the OMD3 JAT. Yeah I know 1800 hours is a lot, sometimes I feel guilty but I really like this game. Multiple restarts with different challenges. Lot of fun. A unique game with a lot of replayability. 🙏
This is my first comment on your channel so let me begin with telling you that you are one of those TH-cam channels that should have way more subscribers. Just continue what you are doing and you will grow your channel fast. Maybe consider (if you can find the time) doing some ATS/ETS and/or Farming sim videos to attract a wider audience. Now a few words on the dead axle we have on some of the trucks in Snowrunner. Most people seem to think that they are only there to make the truck worse. I don´t find the dead axle trucks to be much of a problem really. If you have to pass a crest just raise the axle and go over the crest at a 45 degree angle and you will be fine. The Western Star 49X is one of my favourite trucks.
For those who wonder what the dead axle is good for here is some points: 1: The dead axle will spread the weight of the truck so that it will not go through mud or ice as deep as other trucks. 2: The dead axle will give the truck a higher stance so that semi-trailers will clear obstacles better. 3: The dead axle will almost remove the suspension damage you otherwise get when going fast over hard terrain or paved roads. 4: The dead axle will make the truck more directionally stable when going fast over hard terrain or paved roads. 5: When loading a truck with a dead axle on a trailer the dead axle (in the down position) will provide additional attachment points which will secure it on the trailer better compared to trucks that don´t have a dead axle.
First, thank you for those points on the dead axle! I didnt know about number 5 which is really interesting. Second, thank you for those kind words. They really mean alot. I really wish I could get into those games, but I also have to balance alot outside of content creation which makes it very tough. If this was a means of income, I probably would do all those things you mentioned for sure. Thank you again for your first comment on the channel and for your other comments after this one on those other videos as well! Really enjoyed reading them
@@nostalgia_geim Thanks! Maybe I should do my own YT video about it 😉 Above what I already listed you can also use the dead axle for extra stability when you are using a crane (heavy or light). The WS47X 1430 is very stable as a heavy crane truck with the crane anchors and the double dead axles down at the same time. Also I have sort of mentioned it above but the dead axle in the down position makes a BIG difference to suspension damage and stability when you have the fuel tank or heavy crane add-on. If you look in the garage when you equip those add-ons the truck sinks a lot from the massive weight but the dead axle will absorb a lot of that.
@@nostalgia_geim On all soft ground you should definitely raise the dead axle. In such conditions you only want powered wheels on the ground since you want all the weight you can get to be only on the powered wheels.
It was my first DLC truck I fell in love with. I agree with it's wrong classification but I can understand it's place in the heavy class. The 49x is marketed as an ultimate powerhouse, capable to pull anything and I can confirm that it's incredibly powerful I tested it with hauling the super heavy fuel trailer up the steep hill in big salmon peak and it didn't get stuck in mud, but the dead axle got stuck on rocks but luckily the heavy winch saved me. The dead axle can be useful, but offroad it's really annoying. Overall a nice truck and I absolutely love it's horn. In phase 3 it got replaced with the Pacific P512 PF as my favorite truck and then in phase 4 the GMC Brigadier, but I still use the 49x for really heavy trailers when the terrain isn't that bad and when I need raw power. Great review 👍
You hit the nail on the head with that one! It's really a great truck and I love hearing about more people using these trucks that the obvious overpowered options. I love those other trucks you listed in there as well. Thank you for that comment! :)
@Brian Jake Gaming Yeah it looks good, sounds good and does the job well idk why people hate it so much. Yes it's a bit thirsty but that's the only downside it feels amazing otherwise. Only problem is the front end lifts off occasionally when pulling a semi-trailer uphill but that's it. I really love my Brigadier 🥰
