- even almost 20 years later, there hasn’t been a grand slam final that has topped that 2005 Wimbledon final. Still too this day, it’s one of the best matches of ALL TIME.
💯 Agree ... Best Wimbledon Final ever. My favorite part is hearing Mary Carillo speak as if the match is over just before Venus begins the process of breaking Davenport's serve to take it to the 2nd set tiebreak.
Serena Azarenka 2012 and 13 were pretty epic and dramatic, but no championship point saves in those battles. And probably Wimbledon 05 a tad more physical too.
Her serve was an issue, but she could have won more than 7 grand slams. Venus suffered from a immune disease that affected her game tremendously throughout her career.
She beat an 18 year old Sharapova and a past her prime Davenport. Lol. That would be like someone beating Andreeva and Osaka in today’s game. Her grass game is very overrated.
@@akizaizinskiiWhat are you talking about? first off all Venus made nine Wimbledon finals and won 5 of them. How can her grass court game be overrated?. Another thing Sharapova was the defending champion at the time and Davenport was number one in the world so clearly Davenport wasn't past her prime. You have no idea what you are talking about. Not many people can say they have won Wimbledon 5 times. So to say her grass court game is 'very overrated' is ridiculous. Besides, Davenport and Sharapova was ranked #1 and #2 in the world so Venus beat the best players in the world at the time at that tournament in 2005. You're talking like Venus beat an unknown 18 year old Sharapova was already a grand slam champion she won Wimbledon in 2004 and was the defending champion. I believe Sharapova would have won Wimbledon again in 2005 if it wasn't for Venus. Between 2000-2005 Venus made 5 of the 6 Wimbledon finals including 4 consecutive finals 2000-2003, so how can her grass court game be very overrated with her results at that tournament? Not to mention her three consecutive finals 2007-2009.
@@akizaizinskii Not overrated at all. She won 5 singles and 6 doubles titles. She's objectively one of the best players in Wimbledon history. This is all really easy to google.
Very impressive from Venus. I feel the 2000s and 2010s had such an impressive line up of grass court players. It included Serena and Venus, who in my opinion produce the best tennis on grass of all time when playing at their best. Other great players like Davenport, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, Marion Bartoli, and other dangerous players like Capriati, Henin, Sabine Lisciki, Elena Dementieva just to name a few. That's why Henin who is very good on grass never won Wimbledon. If the 2 Williams sisters didn't peak around the same time and get in each other's way so much in the 2000s, both could have won about 8 Wimbledon titles each. Grass really suited their game. So many great players like Davenport and Mauresmo only won one Wimbledon title.
Davenport and Mauresmo only won one Wimbledon title because of the William sisters. Davenport lost to Venus at Wimbledon 4 times two of which was in finals and Mauresmo lost to Serena at Wimbledon 3 times. In 2006, when Mauresmo won Wimbledon the William sisters were injured and was barely playing that year. Davenport won Wimbledon in 1999 when the William sisters weren't at their peak yet. By the way, the 2006, Wimbledon final was the only year since 1999 final that didn't have a William sisters in the final.
@@akizaizinskii I agree, with how slow Davenport is she would not do well in the current game players are too fast now and hitting hard. Davenport was a good ball striker though. It's her ball striking game that helped her to win 3 grand slams in the 1990s & early 2000s where back then speed wasn't as important alot of players in that era wasn't as quick apart from Hingis, Venus and Serena. Hingis was made to look slow when she played the William sisters they used to overpowered Hingis when they beat her. Especially in 2000-2002 one of the reason feel Hingis walked away from the game. The game was changing to more power hitting and big serving. Serena destroyed Hingis at 2001 US Open SF and 2002 Miami Open QF.
To win a marquee tourney like Wimbledon...5 times out of only 10 in a decade...is remarkable! 2000: Nothing will ever be as sweet as the first! 2001: To defend your title against one of the most scrappy players of all time whose game (imo) is so unpredictable! 2005: Lindsay Davenport threw everything but the kitchen sink at V and she rose to the occasion! Battle of the Big Swingers! 2007: What it must mean to have a ranking below the person you beat...AND both your rankings are basically double digits! 2008: For the first time, and possible ONLY time (imo), Serena simply did not have an answer for Big Sis!♥
She let Serena have them. Donr care what anyone says. In 2009 she was walloçijg everyone and Serena barely even at 70% yet somehow PM the finals day Vee played terrible
@@AaronWilkins-w8e Serena was playing and serving great almost the entire tournament, and had a tougher draw than Venus to get to the finals. Also, Venus was somewhat injured in the final. Odd thing to rewrite history about.
@mrrogers302 sorry. Absolutely NONSENSE. I mean....Serena was playing well. But no way near her best. Literally no way near. She was still the second best most round behind Venus. Her 60/70% is still higher on grass than most others. But no way was she playing as well as Venus. That was Vee's title to take. And the fact she didn't was a disappointment.
@@AaronWilkins-w8eShe did joked about it at the ESPN that she let Serena won all those Wimbledon titles. Who knows whether she was joking or she was been for real indisguise 🤷 But to be honest it was Serena serve that made the difference in most of their matches. Serena just had a better technique on her serve than Venus.
Is it me or are the balls just moving much more quickly through the air. Men’s and women’s, maybe it’s the cameras or the angles or something like that, but these days everything just looks so slow (and obviously it isn’t).
The 2000s were truly a dark era of grass court tennis. How a player with such a wonky technique managed to win 5 Wimbledon Slams is anyone’s guess. A player who otherwise won just 2 of the 95 Slams she played (one of them gifted by her sister). She would have not won a Slam in Graf’s era, that’s for sure.
Venus has a flat first serve and slice second serve, flat ground strokes, and has a wingspan that helps her put volleys away on both sides with good approach shot. That is a good recipe for a grass court players.

Venus Williams (at her peak) , the most athletic and explosive woman tennis player in history.
Wow...Venus Williams movement in 2005-2007 was off the chain!!
I'll always remember the WIlliams Davenport 2005 WImbeldon and Graf Hingis 1999 French. I love rewatching those matches.
Damn she was so good. The one versus Serener was my fave. They battled!
NOBODY was fuckin wit Venus for da 99’ and the 2000’s 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🏾🤷🏽♂️💯💯💯
The last one against Serena was pure gold 😊

Legit so many slams where she lost to the winner and could have won it. I agree. Double digits at the VERY least.

I think Serena outplayed her in the first statistically, it was like 19 winners to 5 unforced errors and somehow Serena lost that set.

Venus - 2008 Wimbledon
