In the US, we have gas stations called KUM and GO. It doesn't make sense why as it has to cross most peoples minds here as a bizarre name. Intentional or possibly German owned? Dunno.
Wait till you've existed at least 57 years. Took me 55 years to look at a pencil and think, "it can do this???". Sharpeners are appreciated only by those who appreciate pencils, and pencil artists are one group that I believe do. :-)
I absolutely like it. The KUM Masterpiece is way better than any other sharpener like Carl, helix, Classroom Friendly Sharpener, etc. this is my all time favorite sharpener. longest graphite point ever!! I really enjoy watching your clip.
Jetpens did a giant comparison, this one gives the best point without a doubt. The second best doesn't even come close. However the KUM is a bit hard to use and takes practice. The KUM Masterpiece takes time to master
In the mid 1950's I was taking a drafting course at night. When it ended the instructor gave me a draftsman's pencil sharpener. It looked and worked like the standard hand cranked Dixon, but with an exception. This sharpener trimmed the wood very neatly, but left a 1/2" section of lead completely untouched, to be pointed later either in a standard crank sharpener or on a sandpaper pad. Alas, I left it screwed to the wall in an apartment, and I have never been able to find another one like it- and there is nothing available on the current market except the Kum Masterpiece for $21, which will make a similar point if the plastic end is removed. Someone really ought to revive that old pencil sharpener because there is certainly an art market for it.
Love the music after the final sharpening of the first pencil. LOL! Thanks for the demonstration. In the market for a good sharpener for my colored pencils. I think I'm sold.
WIOC - World In One Click I'm not a painter myself, so I don't know whether its what they'd like to use. I suppose they might like to make a long lead tip for sketching? But for pencil artists, or those who like to control the overall length of the point, it's pretty darn good. The Big Triple Sharpener will do the same thing (long lead exposure) and is one-third the price.
Thanks for the review. I am like you - so excited about stationery. A stationery shop is like a candy store to me. It so therapeutic and enjoyable use pencils and sharpeners - all the scratching and grinding feels so good.
My guess, if there is a 'generic' sharpener similar to the one reviewed in this video, is to use the left side first. But then, all you'd have to do is to just 'test' each side and immediately you'll see which side shaves the wood and which side only shapes the graphite tip. :-)
RixCanDoit the thing is, this copycat sharpener actually has the openings reversed. Also, there is no plastic insert at the end. The openings at the end are rectangle rather than round. I don't know what shape they should be, but it seems they should also be round just like the end you put the pencil in. I would have rather gotten the one you use, since I like the plastic case and drawstring bag it comes in.
I thought, that the first razor, which puts those marks on the lead, was a flaw of this sharpener. I was wrong! That helps the second razor, to create the perfect point, without any risk, of the lead to break, because of the job the 1st razor does, which reduces the surface thus the pressure the lead accepts from the 2nd razor!
It's a nice pencil sharpener but I have a similar one in which you can actually sharpen pencils, crayons, and charcoal pencils. so getting a KUM pencil sharpener wouldn't be worth my money since I use a lot of mediums and I don't like to keep a bunch of single-media-use pencil sharpeners around. I'm glad you're happy with yours. :-)
+RixCanDoit When I said "similar' I meant have a handheld metal pencil sharpener too that also had two holes. One hole is for sharpening pencils with and the other hole which is bigger than the first one is used for sharpening charcoal pencils and crayons with. I get mine at walmart and the sharpeners work very nicely and I still get sharp points on my pencils.
Sorry. What I mean is that the KUM Masterpiece makes 'long points' that separate it from most hand-held sharpeners. Please see my latest upload on the KUM Longpoint vs KUM The Masterpiece. Thanks for watching and commenting. :-)
The method of sharpening off the wood, then honing the graphite, is pretty alien to me, but the results the Kum gives you are amazing. Long, needle-sharp, perfectly conical, and it even brings out the sheen of the pencil lead like the gleam of a new car's paint job. I don't know if it's due to me enjoying cartooning art, or if I'm just getting old and eccentric and am excited by mundane things like pencils...but I need that sharpener, along with some of your top-grade pencils, too.
Oh my gosh, love that this guy is seriously charged up over a sharpener. You don’t know . . . Maybe he’s searched his whole life for the ultimate sharpener. Maybe all of us should have this passion in finding our bliss. 👍🏼😊
man this is so nostalgia inducing. this was a video i used to watch all the time in like 2015 or something, i was quite literally obsessed with stationary. man how far has life come since i was in 5th grade, im in college now.
RixCanDoit I intend to. I don't love stationery quite to the same degree but value good quality equipment for my writing! Gone off of using wood pencils in favor of the rotring 600 with 0.5 tombow mono 2b for now.
Just ordered one. It's gotta be the Best from the reviews and other videos I saw on it. I'm a new artist, and I'm NOT into getting long points with a utility knife...KUM rocks!!!
The people who made this did in fact think when they named it, only they thought in German. What they did not think of was American morons who are too dumb to realize that words in a foreign language may sound similar to English expressions but don't mean the same thing. Just go on using your "proudly made in USA" rubbish that's not worth the paper it is wrapped up in.
I used the KUM Masterpiece with palomino blackwing pencils, yes it works with my old Eberhard Faber American hb 2 pencils and I really like it. Longest point ever better than any other sharpeners like Carl, classroom friendly sharpeners, etc.
Have you tried this sharpener on coloured pencils and not just pencils. I’ve recently bought prismacolors and need a better sharpener for them. Do you know if this would be worth the buy?
This is six years later and I prefer my Derwent long point crank sharpener for best long point, and I still have a Helix that's better for everything else, but as a small, in my kit or pocket sharpener,, the Masterpiece is great. Several years ago, after a debate about whether it works better to turn the pencil or to turn the sharpener, I called several pencil sharpener manufacturers, and after wading through people who didn't even seem to know the company made sharpeners, I finally got some answers. The consensus was that there was lass chance of breaking the lead if you turned the sharpener, but that it worked both ways. Except with a sharpener that had two holes. The balance on these made it less likely to break the lead if you turned the pencil. I find this is definitely true with colored pencils. Particularly wax based colored pencils. I've found it's definitely true with extremely cheap sharpeners that come "free" with other supplies. I've also discovered there are some fairly expensive name brand sharpeners that don't work well either way..
Turning the sharpener has been confusing me as logically it doesn't make sense to me, however I'm wondering whether because you tend to do the turning with your non dominant hand (for many of us) whether we end up forcing the pencil into the sharpener with less force and that's why it breaks less? Having said that I never seem to have a problem with breakages. I've been toying with getting the Derwent long point crank sharpener, but I do find my Helix makes a great point so I keep talking myself out of it. I wonder whether he stopped a tad soon in this video?
Your smart comments show your ignorance.... I've spent a lot of money buying sharpeners which profess to work as well as the KUM and DON'T , to see a video of the proof of the quality of this sharpener is excellent. ! !
Twenty bucks!!! Oh, when you include shipping. Yeah, it's pricey. But it really is a very good sharpener that will last you a lifetime (except the blades, which are cheap anyway).
Why do people go on and on about how they got to a video?? Videos will come on suggestions on the right-hand side or at the end of watching a video, what's the big frigging deal with "how did you get here!?!?!????" for? Nobody has to explain how they got to a video to ANYBODY, FFS! I'm glad that I watched this video: BY CHANCE!!!! because I didn't know what the 1 and 2 numbers ACTUALLY meant, on a pencil sharpener that has two holes to sharpen with.
Thanks. I get a lot of recommends that don't seem to fit what I've been watching as well. But if it looks interesting, I'll check it out anyway. Glad my video at least provided you with some information. :-)
Thank you. And you should be proud of German engineering. Folks in the US recognize the achievements of German made goods of years past and highly respect it. :-)
Does the KUM AUTOMATIC LONG POINT (multiple slots) have all the housing made of plastic? Or does it have any part made of metal apart from the blades? Which one sharpens a longer tip: the all-magnesium KUM MASTERPIECE (double slot) or the all-magnesium KUM LONG POINT 400-5L (single slot)? And compared to the all brass M+R CASTOR (single slot)?
Wow. I haven't checked but I guess the price went up. I recall paying somewhere around $14 and that's pricey for a manual sharpener (although it is a pretty nice sharpener).
But then you woke up, realized you were dreaming, and ran out quickly to get a real pencil sharpener. Right? No sharpener from WallyWorld can do what this one can. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I mean , not gonna lie but there are...Maybe this one can do it for a longer time but there are sharpeners from the dollar store that can sharpen it this sharp atleat 5 times or so
Unfortunately no. While most sharpeners can give your pencil a 'point', most do not make a LONG point, or allow you to make a SUPER DUPER LONG point. This one can do it.
RixCanDoit uh, I mine does, and I got it from Walmart. I once had teacher who had a electric sharpener that sharpened that sharp. I think you're just waisting your money
Is there any practical purpose to having a pencil that sharp? Wouldn't pressure on the tip, at any angle, cause the graphite to crumble immediately, leaving unsightly marks?
I think we can all agree that sharpening a pencil is necessary to expose graphite for writing. The question boils down to 'how sharp' is considered 'practical'. That is relative to the user, for one size does not fit all. Having a sharp point allows for a thinner write that many enjoy and prefer. Depending on the degree of softness/hardness of the pencil, the retention of that point varies from being able to write several sentences thinly, or only one. There is a trade-off between a soft dark pencil writing sharp for a mere few words and a harder lighter pencil writing paragraphs in sharp detail. The KUM sharpener addresses not only the 'sharpness' of the pencil but also the LENGTH of that point. The longer the point itself, the further down the graphite core one can write and have a relatively nice writing point before it becomes blunt and undesirable. It also should be noted that you can achieve a very sharp point with a short point sharpener as you can with a long point sharpener, where you risk breaking off the very tip. So the deciding factor here isn't so much the sharpness of the point itself, but how long you can make that sharp point last by lengthening it using a sharpener that allows for a longer point. And don't forget, you can always control how 'sharp' you want the very point. Breaking off a tiny part of the tip isn't really a big deal, just a minor annoyance perhaps at the most.
But wooden pencils offer more control over things. You can make the point a smaller angle to be more precise when marking points, you can expose more graphite at once with a lower chance of snapping giving more options of effects when doing art, they also usually weigh less than a mechanical pencil that would have the same lead width. Normal pencils are also a lot stronger build quality wise when looking at the same price range too. Sure, mechanical pencils are good for just doing whatever, like school work that doesn't need to be very accurate but when it comes to art and more precise markings wooden pencils offer both of those, in the same package and better than mechanical pencils can.
Thumbs up on that. Ignorance and intelligence are international and cross all boundaries of race, color, etc. etc. The name in the US is funky, no doubt. I'm not thrilled with it, but it is a word that is not so elsewhere. I'm extremely surprised to see hundreds of thousands of views based on the name rather than for it being what it is, a review of a pencil sharpener. Yes, a very good sharpener, but I did not expect this.
So I am very very curious!! This video was made 2 years ago. Do you still use this sharpener and 2 if you do is it still performing and 3 have you had to change the blades yet? I think I want this. lol I live in Colorado and we definitely have Kum n Go gas stations. My daughter is always buying their swag!! lol
Hello Kat. Yes, I still use this sharpener. It sits right on my desk. No, I have not changed the blades, but that's because I have many sharpeners, and also use pens, so it hasn't received a steady 2 years worth of shaving. Nonetheless, I love this sharpener and it is one of my favorite manual sharpeners.
I recently got this sharpener and I was amazed at how sharp my pencils could get. However, after sharpening three pencils, the point started to break in step 2, in addition of it taking a pretty long time before it actually takes off a bit of wood. I tried semi-cheap to premium pencils, all with the same result if I tried to sharpen as fast as you. Is anyone else having this problem? Halp?
Think about what you just said. A "grown man" and 'MANY' other people. The fact is that 'many' do appreciate a good pencil sharpener, especially when they USE pencils for one reason or another. I'm a pencil artist AND I do a lot of researching where extensive note taking is the norm. For such reasons, I'm going to want the best pencils and by extension a sharpener that makes the best point, or ease of use, or etc. etc. I also like to work on my cars. Because of this, I like tools and get pretty excited about tools. So what's the difference? A pencil sharpener is a TOOL! Obviously you don't appreciate them because you aren't serious about pencil use. That's fine. Being a "grown man" has nothing to do with appreciating a fine tool that makes our job easier.
RixCanDoit please ignore all the comments that talk about "how did I get here" or "why did I just spend 10 minutes of my life watching a guy sharpen a pencil" or "hahahahahah 'kum' hahahahhhaa I'm an immature fool!"
In the US, we have gas stations called KUM and GO. It doesn't make sense why as it has to cross most peoples minds here as a bizarre name. Intentional or possibly German owned? Dunno.
Thanks!
Im sry but you don't get to call it that! lol it's pronounced CUM dude!

Never, have I ever, in my 21 years of existence, seen this much love being shown to a pencil sharpener...
Wait till you've existed at least 57 years. Took me 55 years to look at a pencil and think, "it can do this???". Sharpeners are appreciated only by those who appreciate pencils, and pencil artists are one group that I believe do. :-)

Thank you!
KEVIN ZELAYA I kummed
watch yo profanity
I have the cheap plastic version and it sucks becaue of the cheap build quality although it does deliver a sharp long point.
Dear TH-cam:
I don't know why you recommended this to me, but... Actually, I was pretty interested.
ikr
Jetpens did a giant comparison, this one gives the best point without a doubt. The second best doesn't even come close. However the KUM is a bit hard to use and takes practice. The KUM Masterpiece takes time to master
I find it pretty easy to get a nice point on a fresh pencil. Previously sharpened ones are tough, though.
I would agree with that. I'll pass that on.
Thanks I love hearing tales from the past.
Love the music after the final sharpening of the first pencil. LOL! Thanks for the demonstration. In the market for a good sharpener for my colored pencils. I think I'm sold.
Unpacking a sharpener vid!! how did I get here
Unboxing*
😂😂😂😂 Ikr
I'm not sure what's more depressing, the fact that a pencil sharpener 'unboxing' has got over 100k views or that I am 1 of those views
lol me too 😂😂
The response to KUM was unforeseen. :-0
+RixCanDoit Definitely painters would like to use this, they would not like to waste time with normal sharpner
WIOC - World In One Click I'm not a painter myself, so I don't know whether its what they'd like to use. I suppose they might like to make a long lead tip for sketching? I've never seen someone so enthralled about pencils. Its kind of nice :)
I have just spent 10 minutes and 40 seconds of my life watching a grown man sharpen pencils and getting excited about it... what has my life come to?
KUM
41 seconds
I'd say you spent this time discovering a new pencil sharpener than can improve your pencil points, and thereby you art.
!!!WOW!!! That's is definitely the best pencil sharpener I ever saw. I'm definitely going to order one,,,right now. Thanks
made in germany means quality

Thanks for the review. I am like you - so excited about stationery. A stationery shop is like a candy store to me. It so therapeutic and enjoyable use pencils and sharpeners - all the scratching and grinding feels so good.
Totally relate to that.
I really love KUM
lmfao where at?
+Joel Rojas titties
I love my kum
Can I use the Masterpiece Sharpener by KUM also for Charcoal pencils ?
It might be a little hard on charcoal. You really don't want a very long point on charcoal pencils.
Cum lol
Just got mine today too!!! :D Also the blue "backstop" is removable so you can make the point as long as you like it slides right off.
Dude, thanks for that. Didn't even notice that. That makes it even better!
It is the best!
Are you going to sharpen your pencil with your kum
+Astro lol I get it
jdawg420247 yyy
Which side do you put the pencil in first, if you have a generic version of this sharpener with no number 1 or 2 on it? Thanks!
Is this a serious question?
RixCanDoit yes absolutely and profoundly, sorry if it looks stupid the way it printed out. I'll just rewatch the video and see how you did it. Thanks
My guess, if there is a 'generic' sharpener similar to the one reviewed in this video, is to use the left side first. But then, all you'd have to do is to just 'test' each side and immediately you'll see which side shaves the wood and which side only shapes the graphite tip. :-)

I've been using this for about a year. It's perfectly simple. Thanks for the advise.
I bought a cheap dollar store sharper that has a 3 step and has a long point and is very sharp.
It's depressing
GreeningGamer 3 steps? What are they?
Can you please send the link to where you bought this? I make tons of comics, and this would be PERFECT for making them! Thanks! :)
Please Google.
wow i have been looking at hundreds of reviews for the best pencil sharpener in the world... thanks

I'm a little doubtful that you have one that is 'similar'. So far I've not come across one quite like this.
+RixCanDoit When I said "similar' I meant have a handheld metal pencil sharpener too that also had two holes. Do you still like this better than the regular kum long point? That one is my favorite. I have blown through 3 already but they are only 3 dollars.
I like this MUCH better. But that's just me.
AHHH! I need that sharpener! When I look at sharp ✏️ i feel super high! Who else?

I've been using the Kum Long Point Pencil Sharpener for a couple years now, pretty much the same, but it has a reservior, to hold the shavings.
But does it do crayons?
no just no way what are you get out of here

If you can tell he's joking and you can't tell I'm joking you should get outta here to

I needed a pencil sharpener, KUM is a good brand, and I just got one despite it being twenty bucks. Guess it was worth it.
Twenty bucks!!! Oh, when you include shipping. Yeah, it's pricey. But it really is a very good sharpener that will last you a lifetime (except the blades, which are cheap anyway).
RixCanDoit no, it wasn't shipped. i went out to store, looking for another KUM sharpener, and found it.
"I mean, we're talking some serious pointage right there."
I love this guy.
This is my guilty pleassure...
That song when you show the beautiful perfectly pointed lead had me dead 💀💀💀
hahaha kum.. cum hahaha
he said kum bc he did not wanna say cum
+Spooderman Lookin Ass it's pronounced koom
its called.kum
One of the most satisfying things I've seen in a long time.
Proud of my country now...
Greetings from Germany. Keep it up, you have great videos!
Thank you. And you should be proud of German engineering. Folks in the US recognize the achievements of German made goods of years past and highly respect it. :-)
I really like watching videos of sharpeners and people squeezing foam... (1.00)
Why am I watching this
Have to pass - - - $22 on Amazon - - - Can buy a lot of single edge razor blades for $22 and get a perfect long point
Wow. I haven't checked but I guess the price went up. I recall paying somewhere around $14 and that's pricey for a manual sharpener (although it is a pretty nice sharpener).
I don't even draw but I just watched the hole thing for no reason
You don't write either? Sharpening pencils are not just for drawing ya know. ;-)
We use pens
Gotta love a man who is passionate about something most others would consider too mundane to ever notice or even think about.
Nice thought. Thanks!
My sharpener from Walmart can do that
But then you woke up, realized you were dreaming, and ran out quickly to get a real pencil sharpener.
You right
RixCanDoit uh, I mine does, and I got it from Walmart.
Thanks for the reply!
Or...use a mechanical pencil?
But wooden pencils offer more control over things. You can make the point a smaller angle to be more precise when marking points, you can expose more graphite at once with a lower chance of snapping giving more options of effects when doing art, they also usually weigh less than a mechanical pencil that would have the same lead width. Normal pencils are also a lot stronger build quality wise when looking at the same price range too. Sure, mechanical pencils are good for just doing whatever, like school work that doesn't need to be very accurate but when it comes to art and more precise markings wooden pencils offer both of those, in the same package and better than mechanical pencils can.
I should think that the slightly longer wooden 'neck' of the KUM sharpened pencil should give some greater stability.
who the fu*k would name a company name kum like wtf
Thumbs up on that. Ignorance and intelligence are international and cross all boundaries of race, color, etc. etc. The name in the US is funky, no doubt. I'm not thrilled with it, but it is a word that is not so elsewhere. I'm extremely surprised to see hundreds of thousands of views based on the name rather than for it being what it is, a review of a pencil sharpener. Yes, a very good sharpener, but I did not expect this.
RixCanDoit I've been using them my whole childhood. A masterpiece indeed. I really liked their soft pencils as well.
7:30 LMFAO
I recently got this sharpener and I was amazed at how sharp my pencils could get. However, after sharpening three pencils, the point started to break in step 2, in addition of it taking a pretty long time before it actually takes off a bit of wood. I tried semi-cheap to premium pencils, all with the same result if I tried to sharpen as fast as you. Is anyone else having this problem? Halp?
its 1:34am wat am i doin
mohammad mustafa sameeee!! I have school tomorrow why am I watching this
so you use KUM in your pencils?
why am I watching pencil videos at 6:00 In the morning
Less guilt than watching porn and you actually learn something?
RixCanDoit true
RixCanDoit lol not
Why dose a grown man and many other people get excited about a fucking pencil sharpener legit some people need a life
Think about what you just said. Being a "grown man" has nothing to do with appreciating a fine tool that makes our job easier.
eh ill stick to my note 7's S-Pen, don't know why this video was recommended
he is an artist his life is using pencils so fuck off
RixCanDoit oh sorry, i didn't know that you where a pencil artist, sorry for the misunderstanding.
+antonio windhunter No worries. :-) Thanks.
where did you get that in
How the hell did i get here
Transporter beams?
RixCanDoit please ignore all the comments that talk about "how did I get here" or "why did I just spend 10 minutes of my life watching a guy sharpen a pencil" or "hahahahahah 'kum' hahahahhhaa I'm an immature fool!"
Also are we supposed to scan it with our phone if we're watching it on our phone
LOL! That would be a neat trick.
Damn, I must be bored. I just watched a video on a pencil sharpener.
