Interesting fact (maybe), but that M+R brass sharpener--also one of my favourites--is called "the nugget". They make a nice bullet sharpener ("the grenade") as well. That Kum sharpener looks fantastic, I love the point it gives...also, I feel for some reason that the two-stage process will leave you with stronger lead integrity. Mainly because you're just taking away the wood with one sharpen, then refining the lead to a point with the second; it's not trying to cut through two materials with different densities at the same time. Great collection of sharpeners you have there Harry. I've heard that if you struggle to sharpen a Prismacolour pencil without breaking it with a handheld sharpener, hold the pencil still and turn the sharpener around it. You have to hold the pencil in your opposite hand to do this. It reduces the flex against the pencil. I thought how clearly your video shows the movement in the pencil when sharpened conventionally. That movement will put a lot of pressure on the soft cored pencils. Like one of your other commentators above, I was very surprised at the beautiful long point given by the super cheap Oxford barrel sharpener I picked up from Tesco! It feels a bit rough as you turn the pencil in it. I thought it was going to massacre the wood. But no. A super long, fine point. I like the T'Gaal multipoint sharpener because I can vary the point but it won't take the slightly wider Derwent pencils easily, like the drawing pencils. For Christmas my husband gave me the Caran D'Ache all metal desk sharpener and I love that one. Just like the Derwent and M+R in shape but no plastic. It too has an adjust button to alter the length and shape of the point. It gives me the smoothest sharpen of all.
If you ever decide to update this review, I'd love to see all the pencils afterward, side by side so we could compare the sharpened points to each other. Thank you for the review!
Very much obliged to you for the excellent review of pencil sharpeners. I am not an artist, but use pencils to mark out timber as a woodworker. I've always been frustrated by getting a pencil just so, only to extract it from the sharpener to find that it has broken. Several attempts later, the lovely new pencil is reduced to a bookmaker's stump. Having watched your review, I've decided on the brass, manual sharpener with the option to replace blades. Here's hoping it doesn't get pinched onsite!

Harry, the little sharpener is a Maped. A reasonable good all rounder company for stationary supplies. Not top quality but not rubbish either. I have the KUM and love love love it. I was given my first one as a gift from an online friend who is mad about pens and collects them. I then saw my 2nd one which is like yours with the clutch sharpeners. I made the mistake thinking that they were for normal mechanical pencils as I had never heard of clutch pencils. Thanks to your video I will be having a look now at buying one to give it a try. I have quite an assortment of sharpeners, including my M & R sharpener which I have lost somewhere in the house before trying it out properly; arrgh! I also have 2 leftie sharpeners with being left-handed made by KUM. One looks like the M & R, and the other like a slightly bigger version of the Helix Oxford barrel sharpener which is very much underrated. Cheap enough to throw away when the blade dulls. One sharpener sadly that I found overrated was the T'Gaal from Japan. The quality isn't very good and it seems to be hit and miss on the sharpening. When it sharpens well, it does it brilliant; but when it doesn't it is awful. Another contender is the Conté which is great for larger pencils or hexagonal pencils. I started to write down which sharpeners suited the different pencils. These are as follows: Prismacolor: all KUM sharpeners; Helix Oxford (only when sharp. Derwent Inktense: T'Gaal; KUM Holbein: Helix Oxford; small generic silver coloured sharpener. Polychromos: Helix Oxford, T'Gaal; KUM Caran d'ache Supracolor: Work in progress but so far KUM. Verithins: As above. Derwent Graphitints To be checked. Hope this helps. As a final note: I now for some time now Prismacolors have had a bad press about breakages and cores not centred. I have had no problems except just once which was 'human error'. I have also bought single pencils from Rainbow Fine Art Pencils, and had no problems with them. The Art Gear Guide My pleasure. I have bit by bit added to my 132 set but it took me a while to track down the missing 'new' colours. I received today my final 5 colours from Rainbow fine art pencils. They seem to be the only place in the U.K. That do all colours of the 'big 4'. And they are very well packed and priced too.
Thanks for the review. I use a Dux pencil sharpener that looks like an ink bottle and you can get replacement blades for it. It's another German manufacturer, looks like they make a lot of good sharpeners
I'm not much of a comment reader, so I'm not sure if anyone has answered this question for u...but the little rounded metal sharpener, the 4the one, is a Maped Helix sharpener. I have one of those & they've been great for semi-soft/harder leads as in Derwent, Verithin, & oil based pencils. I will get the M&R crank after watching ur review! Thanx a bunch, again Harry! If I’m correct, on the first sharpener that clutch pencil sharpener is meant to add the point to the long pencil and the second large holes for a shorter sharpen but your method works just as well

Do you mean a sharpener that can be used by children, something they can safely use relatively unsupervised? Or just a sharpener for extra chunky kids pencils?
I own 3 of the 5 you have shown so I guess I agree with your choices! I have even used the cheapo plastic sharpeners and they last a short while as long as they stay sharp!
I have bought koh-i-noor 9095 sharpener similar to the last one you showed m & r and thanks to you it came to me how I can choose the point of pencil I need. thanks
try the dahle 133! it doesn't make holes in the pencils and also goes for very thick ones, graphite, even charcoal if it's not too soft.. it's enough to go like 2 or 3 rounds for a blunt pencil from coloring.. saves a lot of material and this thing is so cheap, I couldn't believe it :)
Thanks for these recommendations Harry. I bought the red Kum long point sharpener a while back, but it doesn't have the mechanical/clutch pencil lead sharpeners in it, so I'll need to get hold of the blue one at some point...no pun intended, lol.
Yeah Jane I love Clutch pencils, I think they feel fantastic in the hand when drawing with them, there is a nice weight to them and I love how strong the graphite cores are and the very fine point you can get on them. I had never noticed before that the red one didn't have the clutch lead sharpener on them, I really just thought they were different colors. Excellent feedback Jane.
I've yet to try the clutch pencils, only have a couple of Jackson Art's own plastic mechanical ones which are quite good. Like you Harry, I thought that the Kum sharpeners were the same except for the different colours too. The red one is still excellent at creating long sharp points though.

Hi Harry, thank you for the great review on your favorite sharpeners. My favorite one for my colored pencils is the Alvin brass bullet sharpener. The Alvin leaves a nice, sharp point that is not too long, but not too short either. :)

But I was wondering if there was a purpose to the real small nitch hole under the one blade? I thought it might be for a clutch, but it didn't do so well with my clutch. Anyway TYFS
I agree with you Kim, of all the sharpeners I use the most I think it would be the little brass M&R one. I mean certain pencils work best in certain sharpeners and I always have spare blades for the wee M&R sharpener, when I put a new blade in it cuts through the pencils like butter.
Thank you for doing these videos, they are informative and interesting. I have the Derwent sharpener and it sharpens Primacolor Premiers without breaking them as well as any other coloured pencils.
I have heard the tip about using a graphite pencil when you sharpen colored pencils all the time. I actually do do this. it does seem to sort of "clean" the waxy buildup on your sharpener blade.

Hi! I was thinking in detail about the Kum sharpener with the two holes, one of which is purely to sharpen the tip - it doesn't take off ANY lead. Is that correct? If that is the case, do you think that it would work with... you know when you've sharpened pencils and you use them only a bit, and if for whatever reason, you need the point to be pin-sharp, could you put a pencil that's been primarily sharpened by another pencil sharpener but that still has a very good taper on it into the second hole of this 2 hole Kum Sharpener and use it to ONLY sharpen that blunt tip and nothing else - meaning that you wouldn't lose any more wood/taper like you would if you sharpened the whole pencil again? Do you think that could be possible? I mean, I'd try it myself, but I haven't bought one of those Kum ones yet and if I do buy it, that would be the only reason I would buy this particular sharpener (I don't like those ultra long points some people do and can't see much of an advantage in sharpening a pencil in that fashion, but that's a whole 'nother question for another time). The only reason I would buy this 2 hole Kum sharpener would be if it's the only pencil on the market that only actually sharpens the tip and nothing else. What do you think - would that work? I am shocked, I have had the KUM for a long time & I had no idea about the clutch sharpeners on the sides! how wonderful, thank you! Also, I got the Derwent, a huge deal on Amazon was only $7 instead of $65, and then figured out --- it bites into my pencils leaving horrible sharp, torn teeth marks ---- horrible! so disgusted. I was blinded at first because the point is soooo long and lovely, but ... I may try to return even tho it was on sale. You can imagine how horrifying to have my lovely White Pearl Blackwing for example, big bite marks in the wood. no good! now found Mitsubishi KH-20, specifically chosen on another review, as per --- it has smooth rounded place where it grabs the pencil --- no bite marks. I noticed yours did not do that so not sure if mine is defective ...
Thank you for this video. I have a question about the Derwent Superpoint sharpener- when I use it on my Derwent Artist's pencils, I end up with a very sharp point, obviously, but an unusual amount of core exposed (~1.5cms). Is this usual for this sharpener? It always seems to me in videos of this sharpener that mine exposes more core than other's (yours included)
Have you tried KUM sharpener with the Polychromos? What do you think of the result? So far, this sharpener gave me amazing results with the Luminance and Derwent Coulorsoft pencils, but I was not as impressed with Polychromos. I think I'll stick to FC triple hole sharpener for the Polychromos as the result is decent, not the longest tip ever, but not short either.
the thing about graphite pencil reviving your sharpener is true, I think it cleans more than sharpens, but it does make a big difference in my experience, anyway
I bought a Ipoint Orbit Battery operated sharpener it came with two spare sharpener blades, but after they were all used up and the sharpener was chewing the wood there are no more spare blades! I have searched the internet I saw something that looked the same but when I got them they were smaller. The company Westcott I couldn’t really find them to ask WHY are there no replacement blades for this Ipoint orbit? Its a good sharpener but I can no longer use it! I’m just wondering if you could follow up on this?
Hi Harry Do you know if there is a quality electric sharpener which will take the albrecht durer as well as the polychromos. I've searched the Internet TH-cam, Amazon, eBay and the really decent ones, are always in the USA and I can't purchase them here. I just thought I'd ask in case you have any ideas. Some of the double or multiple hole units I discovered have a problem as when I read the reviews they don't take the Albrecht Durer. For example the Jakar. Love all your videos.
Hi Connie I am so so sorry for the delay in replying. You are right about the limit of high quality electric sharpeners on Amazon. I haven’t had a look yet in the likes of Jackson’s or Cult Pens, but I have found one that might be good but don’t go ordering it yet, I have just bought it to review so hopefully I will be able to advise you better once I have tested it. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C1KVD1Q/?tag=tecpla30-21 The reason I like this one is because it isn’t simply a plastic sharpener stuck to a motor spinning round, the blades inside are like that of the hand crank sharpeners, that’s the first good point. It can be powered by mains and battery, I personally don’t like the ones that are only battery powered because you spend a fortune in batteries and they lose power fast. Also the power of the motor in this sharpener seems reasonable. The sharpener is between £13 and £17, there is a black and white model and for some reason the black mode is about £4 cheaper. I personally have always stayed away from the electric sharpeners because a lot of people say they seem to take a lot off the pencil, but most of them now have auto stop as is the case with this one. That and my wife would go nuts if I was sat in the living room sharpening loads of pencils while she was watching Emmerdale or Eastenders lol 😂 It will probably not arrive until Monday Connie so I will let you know then. I don't know if there's something wrong with my Derwent sharpener, but it's never sharpened any of my colour pencils to a very sharp point. Sure the lead/nib is extremely long, but they are rounded at the tip. Also, the pencils sometimes twists as the little teeth bits don't hold the pencils tight enough and I have deep cut lines all the way around them. Is this normal?
I cannot find à sharpener with à hole that will take à Derwent Artist pencil. The barrel is slightly thicker than à standard. Maybe 9 mm instead of 8 mm. Thanks for any help.
It doesn’t work with Mechanical pencils as they tend not to need sharpeners but it does work with Clutch Pencils, they are similar to Mechanical pencils only the graphite core is thicker and has to be sharpened.
First off all i love your reviews, but i have one question. I have the Derwent sharpener, but it ruins my pencils, leaves marks on my prismas, polys and all other pencils. Can't sharpen them without getting a mark. I have the Dahle 133, in my opninion its one of the best.

My m + r has stopped sharpening my pencils to a fine point. Nothing stuck in the pencil tube or anywhere I can see. I think the flange that holds it and pushes it in isn’t pushing the pencil in all the way. Any ideas how to adjust that. In tears
I personally think the Brass M&R sharpener is my personal favourite all round sharpener. This works beautifully on Crayola pencils. I would recommend buying a small set of replacement blades for the sharpener which only cost a few £s and will last you a long time. The blades are amazing.

I know mate, when I was editing the video and I listened to that bit back again, I didn't even realise I had said it out loud haha, one of those things I thought I had just thought, but it actually came out haha. So when I heard it I was about to remove it and then I just left it in, I knew it would make someone laugh haha. I am right there with you mate with regards to the pencils, sharpeners, erasers etc, I think even as a kid I loved this stuff but just suppressed it all as it wasn't cool and certainly not a talking point when I was trying to make myself appealing to the opposite sex and I needed all the help I could get on that front haha. when I seen you review that M&R Sharpener mate I just had to get one and you were on the nose with that, fantastic wee sharpener. Enjoyed the video and sharpener variety. You should definitely try a Staedtler 502 for the Staedtler 2mm clutch. Extremely awesome for 2mm graphites, I just wish they had one in 3.2mm and 5.6mm sizes Take Care.

That is an excellent idea, I will absolutely do that
The two little holes in the kum are for different thicknesses of clutch pencils. The red one is for 3.2mm clutch pencils, the white one for 2mm ones.

The two holes for the clutch pencil leads are for different sizes of lead - 2.0mm nd 3.2mm.

Hi Harry, thank you for the great review on your favorite sharpeners. My favorite one for my colored pencils is the Alvin brass bullet sharpener. The Alvin leaves a nice, sharp point that is not too long, but not too short either. :)

Harry, Thanks so much for another great review. I have the little brass M&R sharpener, & I think it's the best sharpener I've ever used. But I was wondering if there was a purpose to the real small nitch hole under the one blade? I thought it might be for a clutch, but it didn't do so well with my clutch. Anyway TYFS
I agree with you Kim, of all the sharpeners I use the most I think it would be the little brass M&R one. I mean certain pencils work best in certain sharpeners and I always have spare blades for the wee M&R sharpener, when I put a new blade in it cuts through the pencils like butter.

I have heard the tip about using a graphite pencil when you sharpen colored pencils all the time. I actually do do this. it does seem to sort of "clean" the waxy buildup on your sharpener blade.
Because this is an art tutorial it might've been a good idea to use colored pencils for a true experience. Thanks for sharing.

Hi! I was thinking in detail about the Kum sharpener with the two holes, one of which is purely to sharpen the tip - it doesn't take off ANY lead. Is that correct?
If that is the case, do you think that it would work with... you know when you've sharpened pencils and you use them only a bit, and if for whatever reason, you need the point to be pin-sharp, could you put a pencil that's been primarily sharpened by another pencil sharpener but that still has a very good taper on it into the second hole of this 2 hole Kum Sharpener and use it to ONLY sharpen that blunt tip and nothing else - meaning that you wouldn't lose any more wood/taper like you would if you sharpened the whole pencil again?
Do you think that could be possible?
I mean, I'd try it myself, but I haven't bought one of those Kum ones yet and if I do buy it, that would be the only reason I would buy this particular sharpener (I don't like those ultra long points some people do and can't see much of an advantage in sharpening a pencil in that fashion, but that's a whole 'nother question for another time).
The only reason I would buy this 2 hole Kum sharpener would be if it's the only pencil on the market that only actually sharpens the tip and nothing else. What do you think - would that work? Hi from Australia 👋 😃
I am shocked, I have had the KUM for a long time & I had no idea about the clutch sharpeners on the sides! how wonderful, thank you! Also, I got the Derwent, a huge deal on Amazon was only $7 instead of $65, and then figured out --- it bites into my pencils leaving horrible sharp, torn teeth marks ---- horrible! so disgusted. I was blinded at first because the point is soooo long and lovely, but ... I may try to return even tho it was on sale. You can imagine how horrifying to have my lovely White Pearl Blackwing for example, big bite marks in the wood. no good! now found Mitsubishi KH-20, specifically chosen on another review, as per --- it has smooth rounded place where it grabs the pencil --- no bite marks. I noticed yours did not do that so not sure if mine is defective ...
Thank you for this video. I have a question about the Derwent Superpoint sharpener- when I use it on my Derwent Artist's pencils, I end up with a very sharp point, obviously, but an unusual amount of core exposed (~1.5cms). Is this usual for this sharpener? It always seems to me in videos of this sharpener that mine exposes more core than other's (yours included)

Have you tried KUM sharpener with the Polychromos? What do you think of the result? So far, this sharpener gave me amazing results with the Luminance and Derwent Coulorsoft pencils, but I was not as impressed with Polychromos. I think I'll stick to FC triple hole sharpener for the Polychromos as the result is decent, not the longest tip ever, but not short either.

the thing about graphite pencil reviving your sharpener is true, I think it cleans more than sharpens, but it does make a big difference in my experience, anyway
I bought a Ipoint Orbit Battery operated sharpener it came with two spare sharpener blades, but after they were all used up and the sharpener was chewing the wood there are no more spare blades! I have searched the internet I saw something that looked the same but when I got them they were smaller. The company Westcott I couldn’t really find them to ask WHY are there no replacement blades for this Ipoint orbit? Its a good sharpener but I can no longer use it! I’m just wondering if you could follow up on this?

Hi Harry Do you know if there is a quality electric sharpener which will take the albrecht durer as well as the polychromos. I've searched the Internet TH-cam, Amazon, eBay and the really decent ones, are always in the USA and I can't purchase them here. I just thought I'd ask in case you have any ideas. Some of the double or multiple hole units I discovered have a problem as when I read the reviews they don't take the Albrecht Durer. For example the Jakar. Love all your videos.

The reason I like this one is because it isn’t simply a plastic sharpener stuck to a motor spinning round, the blades inside are like that of the hand crank sharpeners, that’s the first good point. It can be powered by mains and battery, I personally don’t like the ones that are only battery powered because you spend a fortune in batteries and they lose power fast. Also the power of the motor in this sharpener seems reasonable.
The sharpener is between £13 and £17, there is a black and white model and for some reason the black mode is about £4 cheaper.
I personally have always stayed away from the electric sharpeners because a lot of people say they seem to take a lot off the pencil, but most of them now have auto stop as is the case with this one. That and my wife would go nuts if I was sat in the living room sharpening loads of pencils while she was watching Emmerdale or Eastenders lol 😂

Hi! Could you solve/resolve the sharpening problem with yours Albrecht Dürer? I'm in the same situation. (Sorry for my english grammar. I do my best)
I don't know if there's something wrong with my Derwent sharpener, but it's never sharpened any of my colour pencils to a very sharp point. Sure the lead/nib is extremely long, but they are rounded at the tip. Also, the pencils sometimes twists as the little teeth bits don't hold the pencils tight enough and I have deep cut lines all the way around them. Is this normal?
I cannot find à sharpener with à hole that will take à Derwent Artist pencil. The barrel is slightly thicker than à standard. Maybe 9 mm instead of 8 mm. Thanks for any help.
Does the KUM eraser work with mechanical pencils?
It doesn’t work with Mechanical pencils as they tend not to need sharpeners but it does work with Clutch Pencils, they are similar to Mechanical pencils only the graphite core is thicker and has to be sharpened.
First off all i love your reviews, but i have one question. I have the Derwent sharpener, but it ruins my pencils, leaves marks on my prismas, polys and all other pencils. Can't sharpen them without getting a mark. I have the Dahle 133, in my opninion its one of the best.

My m + r has stopped sharpening my pencils to a fine point. Nothing stuck in the pencil tube or anywhere I can see. I think the flange that holds it and pushes it in isn’t pushing the pencil in all the way. Any ideas how to adjust that. In tears
I have one question ask you the sharpeners you reviewed on your video which one is good for Crayola colored pencils?
I personally think the Brass M&R sharpener is my personal favourite all round sharpener. This works beautifully on Crayola pencils. I would recommend buying a small set of replacement blades for the sharpener which only cost a few £s and will last you a long time. The blades are amazing.
What kind of sharpener do you recommend for Faber Castell polychromos colour pencils and prismacolor?

I know mate, when I was editing the video and I listened to that bit back again, I didn't even realise I had said it out loud haha, one of those things I thought I had just thought, but it actually came out haha. So when I heard it I was about to remove it and then I just left it in, I knew it would make someone laugh haha.
I am right there with you mate with regards to the pencils, sharpeners, erasers etc, I think even as a kid I loved this stuff but just suppressed it all as it wasn't cool and certainly not a talking point when I was trying to make myself appealing to the opposite sex and I needed all the help I could get on that front haha. when I seen you review that M&R Sharpener mate I just had to get one and you were on the nose with that, fantastic wee sharpener. Kum is a German-made sharpener, and it's my favorite.
Dixon ticonderoga is an american brand sold to the italians but mostly made in china. No connection to germany that I am aware of.

Enjoyed the video and sharpener variety. You should definitely try a Staedtler 502 for the Staedtler 2mm clutch. Extremely awesome for 2mm graphites, I just wish they had one in 3.2mm and 5.6mm sizes
