One lost sheep that was rescued was shorn of 78 pounds of wool, to give you an idea of what I mean. However, shearing only doesn't harm the creatures when proper time and care are taken. In large industrial farms, shearing the wool is extremely rushed and injuries are common. Look up sheep shearing injuries and you'll see examples of what a rushed shearing can result in, and if you're brave enough to look that up, you can look up what mulesing is as well. There's also an idea that most people generally have, that these animals are used solely for wool, when they are also used for meat and are slaughtered, just like dairy cows and egg laying hens. So vegans wouldn't want to contribute to wool farming because the farmers doing the bulk of it don't care for the welfare and safety of their sheep, and do what's profitable at the expense of their helpless animals. The sheep are bred, feed, sheared, then killed in the industry bc that's what's profitable. The vast majority of vegans will agree that there's nothing wrong with having and shearing pet or rescued sheep. Most of us even think it's great to donate the wool, or fine to sale it and use the profits towards the costs of caring for the animals, as long as they are being treated well and not exploited for profit. If I had my own sheep, I'd probably shear them when they needed it and donate their wool. I would probably use a bit of it myself, like a cute sheep themed blanket or something but I don't see that as any less vegan than people who use their pet cats and dogs shed fur into stuff.

(seen him nearly put a sheep to sleep once, it was so relaxed about the whole thing) But I do know that's not the case everywhere. That's one of the bad things about those that just don't care properly. They keep all their sheep in way too small areas for hours just so they can shear them all asap. When there's not enough shearers though and they aren't careful enough, the animals end up all panicked cause they smell each others fear and blood. It's animal abuse really, and I understand why you would not want to support something like that. Somehow, I didn't make the connection that this kind of behaviour was common enough to make it difficult to find out where exactly ones' wool originally came from.
