  • As a beginner in photography, Viltrox is one of the names I've seen show up plenty of times. From what I have scene they offer unique lenses at affordable price points. In this video we're going to take a look at the little trucks 20mm F 2.8 full frame lens and see if It's the one you should buy given its relatively low price.

    updates and corrections:
These were pointed out to me:
-This lens does have the capability to focus to infinity. It has a minimum focus distance of 0.19 m/0.62ft.
-the flaring test i did appear to be inaccurate. The test should have been done in the morning in bright sunlight to really understand just how bad it can get.

Looking down a wrought iron fence is a really good way to show bokeh, since you can see what it looks like at every distance along a huge range at once, for review purposes.

I think you did a fine review and it was helpful to me as I am considering purchasing this lens for my Z7.

I love my Viltrox 85mm 1.8. Saved some money VS the Nikkor 85 1.8.

That's another one I see pop up all the time as a really good choice. Viltrox definitely makes some interesting lenses for sure. I've been looking at their 16mm 1.8 for when I start getting into ASTRO photography.

@WIH_R_C you get open sky's with little light pollution now I guess. Yeah, viltrox is good. I like them. Still not as good as Nikon S-Line but nobody will be able to tell looking at the results.

IBIS is meant more for when you're at least attempting to hold the camera steady, not hiking hands-off. It usually fails with big heavy tele lenses and big zooms, because the camera swinging around with all that momentum overwhelms its abilities. Also because tele lenses have such a narrow angle of vision that shaking shows up more. A tiny featherweight 20mm lens SHOULD be working amazingly with in body stabilization. I have a Canon, unlike you, but I can pretty reliably handhold shoot at 1/4 second, 1/2 second if I do a burst and pick the best of 5, for light and wide angles lenses, with IBIS on. (That's with holding my breath and bracing myself and having as many points of contact with both hands, etc). This would be more like 1/30th and 1/15th second respectively without IBIS

@@WIHRC sony zve-10 but I figured it out it doesn’t do wide mode in 4k 30p 100 so I had to change it to 4k 24p 100 but thank you for replying!

    A few issues:
    - 4:17 Huh? You say meters, you write feet. And I don't think it stops focusing at 0.62 whatever, I really hope it goes to infinity.
    - 10:23 Upper edge on the right shows a flare from a light source outside the frame. At 10:30 it is pretty extreme on the left. So when you say the flaring "could be worse" you are technically not wrong but that's also a bit of a non statement.
    - You say you have an affiliate link but there isn't one. Which is a good thing because affiliate links to the things you are reviewing always smell iffy.
With the landscape that seems to be available to you I don't think taking pictures of testcharts is a good use of your time. It certainly doesn't help to stand out from all the other review channels. I would just focus on using the thing you want to show and then reporting about how it behaves and presenting the results.

      Appreciate the feedback.
-The lens does indeed focus to infinity. to be precise, it has a minimum focus distance of 0.19/ 0.62ft.
-in the future, i will opt to do flaring test in bright sunlight based on your statement and the picture i took. I thought that doing so the way i did would have sufficed.
-I'm not sure why the affiliate link is not showing up, however i will work on having its shown since its part of what helps myself and this channel grow. If people choose to use it, I'm grateful but if they don't and there is someplace else people prefer to shop then i will always fully support what works best for people.
The test charts are mainly for people who might want to see things at a finer level. I also thought the charts would help since not every single lens goes through the same quality control aspects so the charts felt like a safe bet. I admit that I could have talked more about the performance of the lens based on my experience with it but all in all this video was more to take a step and try my hand at doing a review like this so I know what to do next time. Now that I have some idea then I can incorporate personal thoughts into a review like this.

Minimum focus, which is IMO one of the most important variables of a lens, especially for a wide angle. Half a foot is great, it lets you get right up to your main subject and have it huge in the frame and interesting geometry falling off away from that, etc. A wide angle with half a meter focus distance would be almost useless IMO. This and WEIGHT are the two major under-appreciated super important things in my opinion.
