I don't know why i feel so awkward when people tell their life stories in the youtube comments. Like "my father did this...", or "I do this..." You are talking to perfect strangers, they're not your friends.
With a dumbbell french press, my favorite way to do it is with my adjustable dumbbell. I put all the plates on one side, so I don't have the other side of the dumbbell hitting my back/neck, and I get to use wider plates. Once I run out of room, which is happening pretty quick, even with 25lbers, I can start putting fives on the empty end.
These have become my favorite tricep exercise over the last couple years. If I'm hitting triceps I have to do these it's non-negotiable. And the room for growth is definitely there. In the last two or so years I went from a 45 lb dumbbell to a 70 lb dumbbell
@@IaloneAmTHEChoppedONEWhen I was a teenager I had a bunch of ghetto equipment. Like a broom stick stuck between two buckets filled with concrete. Milk bottles filled with sand. Damn dude, i due like 90 lbs for 20 reps and I thought I was strong. Never seen anyone even get close to it at a commercial gym. I do full ROM but 110 lbs for 10 is thick💪
Flaring the elbows on these puts the triceps in a more natural path, so completely agree with the tips here. Trying to keep my elbows tucked just kept my triceps weaker and smaller and hurt my elbows more
Alex got me kinda stressin with this recent foray into lifts that are far less joint friendly (btn stuff, this one, very bent over rows, etc.) lol. I ain’t down for it personally but you do you
@@AlexLeonidas I usually do a 60° angle, haven’t had any issues like that myself as long as I stay fully extended with my shoulders and push slightly back
1. The long head isn't under much tension in that position anyway. 2. Triceps do not benefit from being trained in longer muscle lenghts, possibly benefit from the opposite.
I figured out how to do the equivalent of this on rings and have been loving it, especially since it's pain-free and even has a similar effect to push-downs if I decide to back it off with regular ring tricep extensions. Plus, I can extend its RoM into katana extension territory or else just stay in the French press partial range.
Easily one of my favorite exercises. Always felt smooth and never had elbow problems. I've worked up to 105 for 12 after about a year and a half of training.
I love to do these on a preacher curl station with your back against the curl pad, you can get a slight backwards lean which feels way easier on the shoulders and elbows for me. And there is no bench in the way for the dumbell to hit.
If you do this with an upside kettlebell you can get the most insane tricep stretch of all time. The handle slides down your neck perfectly and provides a tiny bit of stability that lets you go so so deep. Give it a try this way sometime!

I had trouble with them and stopped them precisely because of the lockout being too annoying, and then having to reset the movement. The other reason is not having a way to get back support, the benches at my gym have a slab of metal on the back, preventing me from lowering the dumbbell
1) I feel you, and luckily skipping the lockout is easier on the elbows and won't hurt your long head gains 2) Oh yes, I can relate to this one. It's why I still do mine standing or seated without back support. Damn benches are always in the way with that thick piece of metal.
