    I LOVE that this system exists even though I'll not likely be in a position to buy into it. They are re-thinking what a modern camera could be (at least, within one genre) in ways that major manufactures might never do in our lifetimes. Leica COULD also innovate here based on their rangefinder experience and market focus but they're so far out of any hint of "mainstream" as to be irrelevant in this consideration. I wish Pixii success.

      Yeah they have really gone their own way. Very impressive results for a startup.

    pretty happy that there's a modern rangefinder these days, even if the pixii was just mediocre (why it by no means is) it would be great so people can show interest in rangefinders again and maybe the big brands release one that's an actual digital rangefinder and we get choices again other than red dot or old school

    I just wish it had a larger sensor. Not because of image quality or any sort of full frame snob principle, but simply because of the crop factor. Using vintage lenses without a crop is honestly the main reason why I'm considering purchasing a full frame camera, as I'm perfectly happy with the image quality from my Fuji.

      same here, this product is super cool, and it being a true rangefinder makes it very tempting by itself compared to the fuji x-pro series, however I really want to be able to use for example a 28mm m-mount lens at 28mm, not at a 40mm equivalent

  • @shlawchablaas

    I hope these sell like hotcakes, because they look so sweet. I also hope Bo Kajiwara, Mattias Harsch, and Fujio Mitarai will start returning my texts or go out for coffee with me to chat about firmware updates, but I am much more confidant about the first one.
    Also I really appreciate the transparency around wifi / Bluetooth. The major manufacturers took many years to get something barely usable for their camera apps, so honestly having an app that works as well as the Pixii one seems to already at this point, that’s not just baseline-meeting-expectations, that’s awesome.

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And also I meant to say, obviously the functionality is only going to get better. Buffer and battery capacity seem like the only notable continuing issues, with easy solutions, shoot slower and carry an extra battery. Thumb drives are cheap, so getting a 128GB capacity on the camera really costs €40 and some patience (not even patience since you could just keep it strapped around your neck while you walk around, right?). On that note, I guess it’s worth asking, are the file transfers pretty quick via USB-C?

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you transfer to your computer with USB-C its quite fast. To the thumb drive is kinda slow. So if we are talking a days worth of shooting it might be best to have a coffey while waiting.

    Hi Mattias, what isn't mentioned enough, IMO, is that the camera is upgradeable not just for software but also for hardware, so just send it back when the next sensor arrives, or improved rangefinder, processor 'etc.' I have no problem with the aps-c sensor and if good glass is used then the sensor will be using the central area of that lens for superb image quality. It would be great if they had an ambassador in some cities, such as London, so that I could actually hold one before deciding to purchase.

    Genius! Would love that a company is making a open source firmware. I bought a d800 only to dismay that it doesnt have sRAW like Canon. I like customization. And smaller raws come in handy. The jpegs already have this feature for a while what is taking some camera manufacturers to implement a simple software change?
    Here's a few. Maybe even for ver 3.0
    -battery grip mostly for SLR users: plane jane 18650 lithium batteries. (with no lcd i believe the battery will last weeks for those traveling)
    -bigger than crop sensor say 1.3x (im a portrait artist and while 50 being a 75 is great, cropping that much of a 35mm lens reduces bokeh. Not too many lenses between 50 and 85mm. Then 85 mm is practically 135mm. And it really should be a price/performance thing because of vignetting and physics the lens will always be sharp in the center.)
    -internal protected by a door usb-c and micro SD card slots would be great!

    I ordered a Pixii a few weeks ago. Can't wait to get it in already. I was on the market for a Leica monochrome but this seems to fit that bill even better. I was interested back when it was first announced but the first version was underwhelming. I'm glad they were able to produce this V2.

      The Pixii does look quite interesting and I hope you have a lot of fun with it.
      However, I don't think it will quite "replace" a M10 Monochrom ....I have one and it is amazing, it changed my whole view on photography.
      With having a large FF sensor without any color array at all in front of it, you get amazing low light capabilities, and the extreme gradations of shades of grey are amazing.
      I've shot different cameras of different prices and capabilities and so far, there's nothing that can touch a M10M for B&W photography.
      I'm not putting the pixii down mind you....
      But if you really want to get into high fidelity B&W shooting, I'd recommend starting a savings fund after you get this camera and save up for a M10M , or whatever the successor to it is in a year or so....it's truly amazing. I have shots on it that almost seem medium format....strange but true.

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would be interesting to see a comparison of the ISO and DR in the M10M and Pixii. The Pixii already beats the M10 and the M9 Monochrom I had. Which BTW is the Leica Monochrom I personally would choose before the M10M or M11M etc. CCD is magic :)
      But the tests have been Pixii Color vs Leica M10 color. I dont think anyone have tried the Pixii Monochrome DNGs vs any Monochrom Leica so far.

    • @chilecayenne
      @chilecayenne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gearreallydoesntmatter I saw that you had mentioned that and I too would be very interested in seeing those results.
      I"m curious how the pixii folks are "removing" the bayer color filter out of the mix. I was of the understanding that it was always permanently affixed to the sensor...is the pixii somehow removing it? I wouldn't think just deactivating it would do the trick as that it would still be physically blocking some of the sensor.
      Not having the bayer filter in front of the M10M at all is part of what allows the increased sensitivity and gradations of luminance in the monochrome.
      If you find out more info on the monochrome methods and testing of the pixii please do another in depth video on that please!! Thank you!
      :)
      CC

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No it isn't removed and Im sure they will give more info in the future. But it does have better ISO performance than a converted color. So if it is competing with a Monochrome image that is what should be used. The question is how close would it get :)

    You showed us the frame lines in Part 1 and I have been wondering about those: are they projected by a mask in the RF system or are they some kind of digital overlay? How well can you see them in different light? How well do they compare to a Voigtlander R2a--well, any modern Voigtlander camera really.

    Thanks Mattias , most useful , nothing there that has made me regret my decision to buy one . I hope they get the WiFi fixed but it's not a massive issue for me . If anyone thinks prices will drop I think they are dreaming - component prices for everything are going up weekly - a processor board we used to buy for $15 are now ,if you can source any , over $400! The supply chains are broken ,it will take years for them to settle down - if ever.
    Duracell do a great Sony copy battery for £15 here in the UK so having a few spares is no issue.

    My biggest problem with the camera is the APSC sensor and M-mount.
    M mount lenses are expensive (I am Leica M owner btw) and it is a waste in such a sensor.
    They should either put there full frame sensor or work with different mount type to allow APSC lenses which would offer more options.
    The idea behind this camera is ok, but the things I mentioned are dealbreaker for me. Maybe there will be Pixii 3 one day that will be fullframe

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should always buy full frame glass for APS-C cameras when available. That has always been the recommendation among photographers and still makes the most sense. APS-C lenses are a waste of good glass and money compared to using available M-glass, which is not more expensive than any other mount.
      The only difference when using M-glass on APS-C is that you crop out the worst part of the lens, so you get a bit better performance.
      Fullframe would be a nice option and the full frame crop factor can be worked around.
      BTW, which mount with coupled APS-C lenses are you thinking of? As a n M-owner I would think you knew that there is no such mount.

    Since the Pixii will be relying on a lot of vintage lenses, does its sensor incorporate microlenses to compensate for the difference between the way film and a sensor handle non-perpendicular light rays? I know Leica does this with the digital M cameras. Thanks for these fascinating reviews!

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why does it rely on vintage lenses (compared to Leica)?
      Since the Pixii doesn’t have a mechanical shutter and is APS-C it doesn’t suffer the same issues as a Leica would without micro lenses.

    • @donaldcongdon9095
      @donaldcongdon9095 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gearreallydoesntmatter Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I meant that since the Pixii uses M-mount lenses, many of the lenses people will put on it will be vintage M or LTM lenses. Yes, there are newer M-mount lenses, like Voigtlander, but there's a lot of vintage glass out there too. I recall that when Leica introduced the non-full frame M8, they claimed that their microlens array was needed to make film-era lenses work better with a sensor. The reason cited was that film could handle non-perpendicular light rays better than sensors could, so film-era lenses would benefit from the microlens array. Modern digital-era lenses are supposedly optimized for sensors, so the microlens array wasn't needed on new cameras that used new lens designs. That's the reason I asked if the Pixii used a microlens array--to make it perform better with the larger number of film-era lenses people would put on it.
