I been growing begonias my whole life and the way to know when to water begonias is when the plants foliage starts to flag ( by flag I mean when the foliage starts to go limp ) once you water it they will firm again . This will keep them from root rot and fungus natts . Thanks for sharing cheers!
I bring in my flowering begonias (not wax begonias) before a freeze and enjoy the flowers for a while, then as they atart to look a little sad, I move them to the basement and hold back the water. In the spring you will see new growth at which time you start to water. Wait until it is safe to take them out.
Laura! You did it again! You addressed my exact problem, the humidity! Thank you so much. I love your channel and you and your family. Please keep teaching us, my friend. God bless.
Love the houseplants care videos! I like how you explain from your own experience, but still give us the 'usual' information. Also, begonias are the best! more people should get into begonias, easy to care, easy to propagate, beautiful varieties, makes for a perfect collectable houseplant.
i absolutely love all this information on begonias i used to be a serial plant killer and have become- after years of hard work- a begonia person and everything in this video is probably the most vital aspects of caring for rex begonias, picky little buggers but beautiful plants in a dry climate takes some care and effort ;)
I love your video, it gave me exactly the answers I am looking for since I just got my Begonia Rex. Straight to the point, no unnecessary ad libs and fillers. Thank you. You earned a new subscriber here.
Very informative material I have three indoor begonias and let me tell you it's a learning lesson. Every time I water mine they turn a little brown around the edges. I stop watering until I see them drooping and then water them. I find them a bit challenging but I'm learning at the same time. Thanks you guys until next time.
House plants are very popular these days and the more people see them on Instagram and Pinterest, the more they want to know. I think winters are the best time to film these:) also love the point style format and one variety at a time. Thank you!!!
I wondered if I could overwinter the first rex begonias I purchased this summer and this video helped me tremendously. Just pulled two beautiful plants from my porch planter, repotted with fresh soil and have moved indoors to enjoy for fall and winter.
Thanks for the video, just got into begonias again, I have grown the wax types but I recently acquired a Martha Stewart, a Black Mamba, a Pavonina and another which I don't know the name . I live in FL, but people need to remember even though it's humid here, we live in a/c 24/7, so if they are in the house, it is still very dry. I am a notorious over waterer, so I got a meter, which helps a lot, and I am letting my plants dry out a lot more! I have learned a lot about root rot this summer! LOL Great video, lots of useful information.
Perfect timing with this video as my rex begonia is turning brown around the edges; I will try to add more moisture around my plant. Also, have you ever used neem oil for mealy bugs on houseplants?
Hi Laura, had to put my Rex begonias in my indoor greenhouse and they've been thriving since!! Getting ready to propagate them because I want to give one to my Mom, I will out one near my bedroom window, and I just want more of them lol, they're SO pretty!! Your Pegasus Brgonia is just stunning!!❤🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼
OMYGOD Laura I should've known to come to you for caring for my Rex Begonia, and all of my other plants!! I just got a small Rex Begonia and Fittonia plant and they're both suffering from crispy brown edges lol. I will definitely put a pebble tray under them because I'm a former mister for humidifying, it just creates fungal spots on my leaves. Stay safe and well Laura and thank you for saving my plants.💖🤗🙏🏼🙏🏼
I agree with the watering of Rex Begonias, I let mine pretty well dry out! They are a beautiful plant! Love the foliage, watering is one of main concerns of thuu it s plants! I use Neem Oil !
This is really cool, thank you so much for sharing! You've inspired me, I haven't been into gardening for many years since I've moved from the south. I'm glad this came across my TH-cam feed.
My poor begonia rex is not doing well since bringing home, I'm going to try the pebbles in a tray as I think it may help! So glad to have found advice from my very favourite gardener!!! Thanks Laura 😊
This is perfect timing, I just bought a rex begonia and it was struggling. Hopefully I can revive it. I'm in a very dry climate also. Thank you for another great video.
Many comments here mention humidity, an issue for many of us plant lovers...I heard that the Peace Lily increases humidity, so I put my crispy Calathea Ornata next to my Peace Lily and instead of dying, like I thought it was doing, it went from about 10 inches tall to close to 3 feet tall, with giant leaves and no crisp edges, in less than a year, in a 6 inch pot! I also put them both under a white LED panel, and they're looking great! Neither did well in what I consider low light, every low light plant I've had does better in medium to bright indirect light.
I believe I have a type of rex., from the Home Depot... the leaves are very attractive and I'm trying to keep it alive outside....of course....thanks for sharing and happy growing.
I had the exact opposite happen this winter. I saved a wax and rex begonia to overwinter and although the rex variety died the wax one has doubled in size and is blooming. Love your videos as always 💖
Dig up the begonias before any frost, cut back most of the foliage and loosen the soil from around the tuber. Let them dry out for a couple of weeks before storing them in bags or newspaper, lay them in trays or boxes and put them in a cool, dry area, basement or garage, garden shed etc. Hope this helps. Happy gardening!
I haven't had any begonias for house plants for quite a number of years because I tend to kill them with to much water. I was toying with the idea of bringing in several of my big showy blooming ones today because we're supposed to get a killing frost tomorrow night. After listening to this I'll probably save myself the trouble and just buy new ones next spring. I have never had the Rex begonias so maybe this is one I will try next year. Have you ever grown the Escargot begonia? I love the big spiral leaves of that one and I think it is a Rex begonia... maybe I'll give that one a try for overwintering it indoors.
Good info! Just brought home a Rex begonia today, like yours with the dark burgundy foliage. High humidity here in Florida right now, but the heat is so intense that I’ll be keeping my Rex indoors till cooler temps in Sept. I’m a gardening addict so subscribed to your channel straight away.
Hello !! I just bought a begonia rex and this video is very instructive for me ! Thanks !! I just have a question i dont have perlite but sand, not fine sand, i use it to mix with the soil for my succulents. Can i use this instead of perlite for my begonia ? Sorry for my bad english i'm french 😅
I have a rex begonia that I got on clearance and did not look healthy at all. I wanted to see if I could revive it and bring it back to life. I used Lechuza pon instead of potting soil and have it in a self watering pot. It's beginning to thrive and has put on several new leaves.
Hi Penny, My begonia started as a leaf cutting from a friend. Several times, I thought I had killed it when it was outside, but it always comes back. Mine is 4ft tall too.
Thank you, this was great! So informative, without lingering unnecessarily or overexplaining. I just got my first angelwing begonia and feel so much more informed now. Thank you!
The pegasus begonia you have is awesome, I have a question about ours. Can you propagate this plant? Ours has 3 fat stems that are about 12" tall with only a couple of leaves on the top. Could I cut off one of those and grow another plant? It is starting to grow off stems but it was never as full as yours. Thank you
What about trimming or cutting off the ‘roots’/gnarly part that starts coming over edge of pot. Do I simply cut or…? I hate to repot as I don’t want a huge pot/plant. Do I separate perhaps? Thanks
Can you suggest any remedies for wilting rex begonias? I have a small one some of the leaves are just fine but I am finding the smaller leaves/stems are laying completely flat. The soil is moist as they were watered 5 days ago. I have a humidifier by the plant. The plant hasnt been over watered. I waited until the soil was dry before I watered the plant
Could you please do a video this winter that addresses peace lily care? (That way I can figure out how to get mine to bloom, it hasn't bloomed since I first got it.)
I used to have a pendulous begonia in a terracotta hanging pot it had lovely oval variegated Leaves and tiny red flowers .This type was also available in Burgundy coloured leaves with Purple flowers. I tried to find it on the int. net but it doesn't seem to exist in the list. Some years back l came across it in Australian Woman's weekly.
I have a Gryphon begonia that was big and full when purchased, but now about 2 months later it is beginning to loose leaves and stems. I’m afraid I may have over watered and/or too much fertalizing so need to know what i can do to save this plant. It is planted in all purpose potting soil. Thank you for any suggestions.
I purchased a begonia blad and I asked chat gpt and it mentioned they are very toxic and I should even wear gloves when treating it, and that gave me anxiety but then I watched this video and it seems it’s not that dangerous unless the roots are exposed, so what should I do?
~my plot~ 2 HOURS EARLIER Laura : " is it cold out there ?" Hubby: "Yup, so.. no videos today, aight?" Laura : "Get the camera, hun.. we'll do the houseplants, duh!!"
I have a few Rex Begonias in my house and one source I read said not to wet the leaves but you said I can mist them for humidity. Is it ok for the leaves to get wet? I'm confused.
Laura- I purchased an Oakleaf Hydrangea here in Dallas. It’s been raining off and on for 2 weeks. What do recommend for the winter. Looks like temperatures are now going to be 45 to 63 during the day.
Another great video thank you! I’ve always liked begonias but I haven’t been brave enough to try one indoors. I think I will try it now! Do you have any info about kangaroo paw fern?? I'm killing my strawberry begonia...any advice...I bought full and beautiful and all the hangings have died.
Cool thank you! That's how I keep my basil plant alive so I'll just replicate that for my new begonia I picked up today ☺ xx
When you say limp do you mean stiffness in the leaves? Sry I failed grammar class. 😂
Everybody has their own way to do it. What it comes down to is get enough bright indirect light and don't over or under water.
For a Rex begonia too? (Limp like an old salad leaf?)
When she added the ‘skip to’ part, I paused and subscribed immediately 😂 what a great person 🙏🏽
my 18 month old and I watch your videos together in the morning and she just started saying "hi, laura!" 😍😍😍
Did she say that before she said the word ‘mom’?
I bring in my flowering begonias (not wax begonias) before a freeze and enjoy the flowers for a while, then as they atart to look a little sad, I move them to the basement and hold back the water. I love the tray of pebbles in water - it's functional and cute!
I wondered if I could overwinter the first rex begonias I purchased this summer and this video helped me tremendously. Just pulled two beautiful plants from my porch planter, repotted with fresh soil and have moved indoors to enjoy for fall and winter.
Thank you Laura for such a comprehensive care guide. I know about Begonias. Thanks!!!!!

I have one exactly like the one you weren't sure the name of- it's called a "Cherry Mint Rex Begonia" The iridescent leaves are beautiful!!😍
So helpful! I've struggled with a rex begonia for almost a year. Now I have a game plan! Thank-you!
Perfect timing with this video as my rex begonia is turning brown around the edges; I will try to add more moisture around my plant. Also, have you ever used neem oil for mealy bugs on houseplants?

You were meant to be gardening,I guess.
I love these types of videos. I bought a tiny begonia and it went crazy so I had to repot it. Thank you for the information.
Very organized. Care about our time. Grateful
Really really nice feature to have added the chapter links on screen. Superb idea.
My poor begonia rex is not doing well since bringing home, I'm going to try the pebbles in a tray as I think it may help! So glad to have found advice from my very favourite gardener!!! Thanks Laura 😊

How did it go with your plant?
@@hiwiyoukhana4345 hi, sadly I failed. It was just too far gone. However, I've kept my new one alive for almost a year!
What did you do differently? I have a black mamba begonia 🍻
Yes!!!! Love begonias so much. Thank you for this!
I was gifted a gorgeous Begonia thurstonii and I'm so in love! Thanks for the video - so much good advice.
Excellent,, just 4 sweet begonias and super excited to take care of them
That Pegasus Pegonia is so gorgeous!!!!
All of your videos are very helpful. I love watching your videos eventhough I don't have some plants you show us. great work keep it up thank you

I saved a wax and rex begonia to overwinter and although the rex variety died the wax one has doubled in size and is blooming.
Love your videos as always 💖
Do you have any tips? I just got a wax begonia for my birthday and I don't have outdoor options. 😂💚
I have a 4th generation Angel Wing begonia that I love and it has the prettiest pink blooms
Thx! I have them also in a bowl with stones, and it works perfect!
I use the tray method with great success for at least ten years. I'm in a dry winter humid summer climate.
Thank you so much Laura! I really love that you include toxicity in your videos for inside plants.
Helpful information. Would have liked to watch you dig up tubers and learn how/where to store them.
Thanks for the information. Now I know what to do to keep these beautiful plants.
I Love your care guide videos! Please do more on regular house plant. I would be super exited if u Did a care guide of Hoyas.☺️
I have been bringing wax begonias indoors for several years and they bloom even in the winter. They don’t die back unless they get too dry.
Thank you this was extremely helpful!!

Thanks for sharing I just bought my first on today a dragon wing . I'm so excited to have her .
Loved it. I have a few begonias (7 ) in my collection and these tips are worth it. Thanks all the way from Assam.

Hi Penny, My begonia started as a leaf cutting from a friend. Several times, I thought I had killed it when it was outside, but it always comes back. Mine is 4ft tall too.

My garden answers sweater just arrived!!!!! Yay
Very informative. Can begonias bloom all year as an indoor plant? Mine hasn’t bloomed all year! What am I doing wrong?
Your our answered so many of my questions. Thank you for presenting this step by step and easy to understand video.
Thank you. I just have to trim my rex begonia because of fungus and I spray with peroxide and that seems to work.
Does your begonias grow in your kitchen or in your greenhouse?
Very complete guide.
Thank you, this was great! So informative, without lingering unnecessarily or overexplaining. I just got my first angelwing begonia and feel so much more informed now. Thank you!

When I was in elementary I used to chew my mom's begonia plants. They taste sour.
What is the best time/month/season to repot them?
Great video as always. Can you go over how to store canna, dahlias, elephant ear and tuberous Begonia? Time to get them all dug up! Thank you!
What about trimming or cutting off the ‘roots’/gnarly part that starts coming over edge of pot. Do I simply cut or…? I hate to repot as I don’t want a huge pot/plant. Do I separate perhaps? Thanks
Have you ever considered usind a chlorine dioxide solution for plant pest control? I use it for myself, so why not for my plants?
In regards to a humidifier, you can use a table fountain. Or so I hear.
The large begonia sort of look like marijuana on steroids...lol, beautiful plants.
I almost forgot to post like for this great lady
Can you suggest any remedies for wilting rex begonias? I have a small one some of the leaves are just fine but I am finding the smaller leaves/stems are laying completely flat. thanks laura for the onfo. on the wax begonia
Very good video you explained everything very well thank you
Since Begonias are subject to over watering can you use a Pot with a wick ?
Thank you so much this helped!
I have a self watering pot, do you suggest that.
Ever done a tutorial on ferns, indoors and out?
we Got a Plant Called Begonia Growing Outside Our Yard It was Really Special To See when My Parents Got Them.
And Its Really Special To Me.even Tho Im Named After It

Lots of great tips!
Another great video thank you! I’ve always liked begonias but I haven’t been brave enough to try one indoors. I think I will try it now!
Do you have any info about kangaroo paw fern?? I just bought one. I like how you have a nice predictable format to follow in your videos. Maybe add propagation to your kangaroo fern video for me? Thanks!!
