Yes. You can tell by my nom de plume my interest in the breed.
Since 1992, I have adopted ten Kuvasz puppies, seven of which have now passed on. All but one lived 11-13 years. If you are not familiar with the breed, I envy you, because if you adopt a Kuvasz you will be embarking on a terrific journey of man and beast.
You can read all you want about the breed, but even after nearly three decades, mine continue to amaze me with their uncanny ability to read humans.
The first thing about Kuvasz is that you have to be a strong-willed person or the dog will become unmanageable. At full size a male Kuvasz will be 100 pounds plus, with a female being 85-110 pounds. The females are just as tough as the males, albeit with both a gentler nature, yet still capable of personal or property protection. If possible, use a professional trainer to show you the proper methods to instill discipline with your puppy.
The breed takes a long time to mature emotionally and dog 2 years old will still be as rambunctious as a 6 month old puppy. And they bark. So living within a neighborhood with houses close together will likely cause you to know your neighbors because they will be banging on your door to get your Kuvasz to quiet down. That is the major draw back towards the breed. They are bred for predator control and anything out-of-the-norm commands their attention, by barking. Out in the country where my wife and I live that is fine and provides an early warning system for us.
These are loving dogs that are sensitive to criticism and praise and they absolutely want to be around and protect their families. You won’t find a more handsome and intuitive animal with which to share your life.
The important thing about the dogs offered by any kennel is that the kennel is dedicated to breeding dogs with good temperament and dispositions.
If you are interested in buying a Kuvasz from any kennel you should ask the owner for contact information about others who have bought their puppies.
      GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY

Yes as my profile picture shows. My Kuvasz (full registered name: Mount Godwin Austen - Chogori , aka 'K2' for short) has been a guard dog of property, children protection dog, and a hiking partner. In the absence of livestock, he has taken my family and other relatives and friends as his charges, especially during our outdoor adventures. He also accompanied us during the day-long pontoon boat adventure through Eastern Georgian Bay and the Biosphere Reserve in Ontario, Canada. You can find all about our adventures at meandmyk2.com

I had a kuvasz for 13 years. I had originally thought to train her for bomb and rescue but she had troubles climbing ladders. She remained with me until her death and I’ve yet to find her equal. Lunta protected me from a Rottweiler attack. Lightning fast and strong there are few animals that can get past a kuvasz. If a person or other animal was welcomed into the home she became their guardian and she has watched over many a rescued bird, kitten and even a lost ground hog. I once rescued a baby warbler and as it grew it rode around on her back and learned to fly by jumping off her head. A duck was struck by a car leaving five ducklings and they were brought to my home. They became Lunta’s pups and they followed her around and would curl up with her at night. She would lay by the pond as the ducklings swam and bark when it was time to go in. Truly, the best friend you could have.

Hello Just found you and couldn't agree more about the Kuvasz. We had 2 Kuvasz's. Your information is spot on. I would like to add that the Kuvasz is a very smart and indepentent dog. They will not play silly games (like go fetch),but will enjoy long walks. We learned the hard way that they like to be challenged. One day our dogs were in there fenced in kennel (a very large fenced area) when I noticed one dog was running in one direction, and the other coming from a different direction chasing a rabbit. The rabbit lost. They were working together (instinctively) hunting down this rabbit.
Another day while in their kennel, I noticed dirt flying in the air. So I went to inspect and found the larger of the two dogs digging feverishly, she had dug a tunnel about 4 feet long going under the fence.
As for loyalty goes this breed is amazing! One summer our neighbors were all burglerized but us. I'm sure it's because of our dogs (soon afterwards 3 neighbors got dogs).
I'ts been 12 years since we had them (they lived 13 years), and we still miss them.
Thank you for your video 🧡

My grandmother had a Kuvasz called Bela, when she was a little girl in the 1920s. She always slept curled around him. When I was a little girl she told me stories about Bela and I longed to have a companion like Bela, too. My grandmother was born at the Hungarian-Serbian border.

This can be vastly influenced by proper early socialization.. If raised with dogs or other pets, they are gentle and friendly towards them. Outside of your home, they should not be agressive towards other stranger dogs, but they might not like it if some other dog they dont know yet will come to your property..

My first dog was a kuvasz. They will protect their family no matter what, also the propety. bBut also because of very high demand for excercise and immense protective instincts I don't think they are the best city dog, they would thrive on a larger property or a ranch where they'd just inspect and guard the land or livestock.

I have a question, I have a house on 5 acres in Florida and was wondering if the heat and humidity here would be too much for the Kuvasz?

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I am not American, so i am not sure how hot Florida is, but Kuvasz is not the best choice for warm regions. It is okay for them to live in warm climate for part of the year, but they need to have some cool and shady spot/shelter where they can rest. The Kuvasz is breed of dog that is built for rugged climates and i dont think it would be a good idea to get Kuvasz into a place with hot and humid weather all year long. If you need livestock guardian for warm climate, you can check out Anatolian Shepherd, Estrela Mountain Dog or Maremma Sheepdog.
