Delta Flight Attendants Explain Why They're Unionizing

  • Delta is the last major airline without a flight attendants union-but not for long. Delta flight attendants have launched a massive union drive that would organize 22,000 workers with the Association of Flight Attendants. They narrowly lost a union election in 2010 but say this time the tide has turned.

I used to work for Delta, and it was a great experience. They treated me well, and I loved the company, but I am not naive. The flight attendants there definitely need a union. They need their work rules in writing...in a mutually agreed upon contract. I don't think Delta's pilots regret being unionized one bit!

Absolutely not! Delta treats their flight attendants exceptionally well! They are the only airline that pays flight attendants for boarding, after all. Unions are needed at places where employees are being mistreated by their company. Delta isn’t one of those companies.
Flight attendants there are not unionizing. There is an active effort by AFA to organize them ONLY because that would be an extra $14,000,000 in AFAs pocket every year.
Unionized flight attendants face the exact same issues as Delta flight attendants. The only difference is they pay dues to be rerouted and flown into their off days. Unions have tried to unionize the Delta flight attendant workforce three times already and every time, flight attendants have voted no!

Unions are needed in all industries, not just where workers are mistreated. Companies like Delta only treat us so well because they're terrified that we will unionize. The pay for boarding is nothing but a ploy to prevent the union, which is desperately needed. But you're CHOOSING to say that it's because "you don't have an Union", or that "you're being exploited", only to gain sympathy to get votes PRO Union...! That's called MANIPULATION!!!! And yes, we all wait HOURS to get Crew Schedule on the line to help, because, GUESS WHAT!! EVERYBODY IS CALLING AT THE SAME TIME!!!! 😂😂😂😂 And from several airports at once, and they also have problems with LACK OF PERSONNEL working...! Sooost!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ This people! You want an Union because of the idea that having an Union helps you work less while being protected anyway. That's being lazy!! How about you start moving that little booty of yours, and keep representing your airline by PERFORMING TO THE SAME LEVEL!! Like THE BEST!! There is something inherently wrong with American business and corporations, it is called GREED. This is not an issue in Europe where companies see the well being of employees as something good for business. In America you are disposable, they can get 10 like you to replace you. The airlines got $50 BILLIONS from the government to help them during covid, so they don't have to lay people off. But what did the airlines do? they laid off people and pocketed the money and now they are suffering. Only in America this nonsense happens. Delta and the rest of them are awful companies. The CEO makes millions a year sitting on his fat behind while workers suffer. And american unions are not so great either, they are like the mafia.

I would just hope if the people who want it, finally get it, that a lot of the negativity and bitterness will exit the atmosphere. All I hear these days is complaining and bitterness and this is why we need a union this and this is why we need one that. It makes work more negative than it has to be dealing with all of that. Especially if you aren't one way or the other. I have personally been treated like something was wrong with me for not chiming in on conversations or walking away from them to go mind my business once these convos start. Even hearing someone say as I walked away one day... "oh I guess we scared her away". Unnecessary. And unwelcoming. Or if you do chime in as they expect you to and then say no I'm pretty content and I appreciate what we have as it is....then they diminish your personal experience. Responding with things like "oh you've just never been screwed over" etc etc. Insulting. And personally I don't look at it like that to begin with but either way to not know my story and then to proceed to discount my experience here is rude. It's like everyone is entitled to feel how they feel and I respect that and don't make snarky condescending comments to them yet that same respect toward my views isn't usually reciprocated. At the end of the day I just wanna work and mind my business. Not get caught up in a ball of negativity on top of the stress we already deal with from angry and anxious customers. The only silver lining for me would be that hopefully the culture changes because it's sad how a lot of us are. Time will tell.

You are completely entitled to your point of view, but unless the leadership is corrupt, unions can only benefit workers. There's nothing to lose and a great deal to possibly gain. Maybe your wages and benefits are good now in your view, but if you had a successful union behind you that was doing its job properly you would be able to receive even more. It's just something to consider. Unions help to level the playing field between workers and ownership.

As your fellow coworker, I encourage you to reexamine your position. When COVID hit, Delta fired all of the contractors. This impacted friends of mine and almost impacted me personally. I was hired days before the layoffs. The ONLY reason Delta didn't start firing their own employees is because they received 50 billion dollars from the government with the stipulation that they could not fire their employees. This is why they offered early retirement packages instead. Things might be nice now, but Delta would turn on you in a heartbeat.
Delta used to have a pension plan, but they axed it. We could get that back with a union and protect you from being fired with no say in the matter. I think your opinion is valid but I hope you consider what I have to say too. From my perspective, it's the pro union people who have to stay quiet. Union is a dirty word and speaking it invokes a fear that the company will fire you. I hope you reconsider, coming from your Delta coworker who works at Techops.

@@ryno4ever433 two totally different departments here. Apple and oranges. Your experience is in direct contrast to mine. The pro union flight attendants *are* the most vocal (at least at my base, bases def play a huge role as well in the attitudes of our work groups). So for someone like me who minds my business and doesn't engage I usually offend people simply by not entertaining as stated in my example above. That is not okay to have to come to work to. I always mind my business and smile and nod even if I disagree. But heaven forbid I ever spoke up, I would *not* be treated with that same level of tolerance and respect; I know this from experience, once again, and this is why and how I learned to keep my mouth shut when working. We all just need to respect people opinions and if I don't want to chime in and join the negativity circle then don't make snide comments and be immature about it. We all need to be way less hive and tribal minded. It makes for a very toxic work place. You have no idea at all why my stance is what it is. But regardless my stance is just as valid and I still need to be respected by my co-workers and not seen as the enemy. I am not Delta. I didn't do anything to you. We all are here by choice.
I hope you reconsider pushing your work politics onto others.

@@ryno4ever433 also I just saw the way you responded to some others here. Calling a person who didn't want a union (because he came from one and knew what it was like already) a 'scab'????
See this is the exact issue I'm speaking of. The tribal, hive-mind and toxicity you exhibit toward people who disagree with you is so sad and what makes an already challenging line of work even more challenging.
You just proved my whole point.
