      In the mid 60s, Gary was more popular than his father. If anything, being Jerry Lewis's son made it difficult for Gary to shake the celebrity son stigma. The problem was enhanced by Dino Martin, Desi Arnez Jr. and Billy, whose talent was marginal at best, especially when compared to Gary Lewis.

    My band at the time played with Gary and the Playboys New Years Eve, '84 at Sutters Mill in Granada Hills, CA. We alternated sets, so we just let them use our equipment. He could still sing real good back then, they sounded great and I was quickly reminded of how many hits they had! Some great tunes, like the one in this video. It was a great New Years Eve party and I felt super fortunate to play with them. The drummer taped his band's set list to my floor tom, which I kept for years but sadly lost over the years. Had all the hits on it.

  • @mschierb1
    @mschierb1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The single version (played here) is the one with the horns. For some reason, on the stereo releases, the horns are missing and you get the full beauty of Tommy Tedesco and the rest of LA's The Wrecking Crew playing on this song. I've been a fan of Gary's since 1965. He is also by the way, a super nice guy who is accessible to his fans. Has a great sounding touring band as well.

    People don't realize how popular Gary Lewis and the Playboys were. In two years they recorded seven top 10 songs, including a number 1 hit. In fact, they are only one of two groups in the 60's to have their first seven releases make the top 10. The Beatles didn't even do that. It was only the Vietnam War and Gary being drafted, that stop the string.

    I never did too much to make her stay here ....
    And words of love to her I'd never say !!
    I guess I learned a lesson when she ....
    walked out to stay -
    But I'm sure gonna miss her .... sure gonna miss her,
    I´m sure gonna miss her every day !!
    I don't suppose I ever said "I love you"
    And I found out too late that wasn't right !!
    I'm just now realizin' what I lost - that's why I'm cryin'
    And I'm sure gonna miss her - sure gonna miss her,
    I´m sure gonna miss her every night !!
    I know I took her love for granted .....
    Guess you could say my love was blind -
    Thought if she left that I could stand it ....
    Or else it didn't matter at the time !!
    I heard she's found a guy that treats her better ....
    I hope he knows that "he's a lucky guy" -
    I know the rumor's true because - I saw her today ....
    And I'm sure gonna miss her ... he was walking with her
    I´m sure gonna miss her .... yes I am

    Good song with meaningful lyrics and good rhythm. It was one of my favorites when I was a young man and attended the University as a student. Now so many years later I attend another University but as a teacher. How things change with time. But this song is still one of my favorites.

    Having grown up on music from the late 50s up to today, there is a lot of music and groups that were/are very good and even great ,that never got the credit or listeners they deserved . Simply because most of us ,including me , are into fads. I believe I and others my age have grown up with the best music of all times . From the early 50s up through the 90s music expanded at an incredible rate .With some of the best composers and arrangers EVER. The expanse of music in our time is incredible and we all need to expand our listening. We may miss out on more really incredible music if we don't. don't judge an entire genre based on a few objectional songs

      Ohh... That is so sad. Perhaps you can call her?? Find her?? Is she married, or still alive?? Maybe it's not too late. My husband just played this song for me...it was a hit when I ended our relationship because of how he treated me...forty-eight years ago, but he got back in touch with me in 2011, and we've been married, now, for three and a half years, and I love him very much...and he treats me great.

    Good song of a situation that sometimes happen: only when we lose a loved one we did not treat as we should do we realize what a treasure she had and what we lost. But some of us have to learn the hard way.

  • @jmrodas9
    @jmrodas9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good song and with a good realistic message. Sometimes we take things like loves too casually and later lament when we lose them. If we want to keep a love we must nourish it daily and treat the girl right so she won't go away, looking for someone else.

    This song which was featured on the HITS AGAIN album was released n February 1966. I believe this performance was taped in early 1966.
    (During that time, Gary moved from being the drummer to being the front man and they hired a drummer with a Beatle style haircut to take his place.)

    The guitar lick in the song is played by Tommy Tedesco of the wrecking crew and none of the playboys could even come close to playing the lead guitar for this song so they didn't even try.
    They didn't like to do this song live because they couldn't even do a good millie vanilli fake of this guitar lick. They couldn't move their fingers for pretend as fast as Tommy actually played the notes. That's how good Tommy Tadesco was!

    Just to be clear; according to the docu featuring Hal Blaine Tommy Tedesco; studio musicans were the way to go in the reccording studio for a decade. They all had more work than they could handle because everyone from Frank Sinatra Dean Martin Beach Boys Gary Lewis Glenn Campbell et al wanted over 150 members known as 'The Wrecking Crew' to play on their albums. Hal Carol Tommy being a few of the more prominent. Then; a former studio musican himself Glenn Campbell decided on his next album he would use his own band members in studio. As Hal says ' and that was one of many that decided to follow suit' and an era as many do in music began to slowly disappear. Hal says he ended up working as a security guard in Scottsdale. So it is really easier to single out who DIDN'T use studio musicians than who did for that decade when The Wrecking Crew reigned supreme.
