    Good for you bro, I did 8 years and 4 months as a Machinist’s Mate(a rough job) and at the end I was not enjoying what I was doing anymore. While at my second command while underway I just had an eye opening thought that I was not happy leaving my kids and wife sweating 😓 my ass off everyday down in the hole. It was time to go, I had a good amount of savings and my wife was working as a Medical Assistant. Although it took me about a year to find a job because of the recession of ‘09 when I got out. I’m happy to say everything worked out for me and mines years later, now I work at a hospital steam plant making top dollar and I get to come home everyday. All in all everyone has different reasons to stay in or get out, congrats on continuing to serve. I salute you! 👏🏼👏🏼

    Certainly not shitting on anyone that's getting out or has gotten out, but yeah bro, I have 0 idea how people can't see the forest for the trees while on active duty. My story is pretty much the exact same as yours, just about 3-4 behind, just sewed on E-5. I have several friends that ended up getting out a few years back and each and every one of them has had to either move back in with family, and/or take a huge cut in QoL and pay. The thing I'm telling my troops as a new E-5, every time I hear them say "oh man, I can't WAIT to get out, fuck shaving, fuck PT, fuck this, fuck that" is that you need to take a step back and think logically about what you're worth is on the outside, and what you're giving up by getting out. My wake up call was just prior to when I decided to stay in, I calculated my new healthcare premium as I was planning on going back to school, or getting an entry level Imagery analyst position with pretty lackluster benefits. With a family of 4, my healthcare premium a month to achieve the same level of care to the point that if my wife's leg falls asleep and she feels like going in for an x-ray, she can for free, would run me anywhere from 1600- to like 2200 bucks! That shook me like crazy, and then there's the possibility of traveling to cool new places I'd be giving up, the community that exists within the military, the retirement that's going to come up quicker than people think, the BAH, and tbh I the fact that people actually give a shit about you in the military compared to civi life (at least from what my father who did 21 and retired as an 0-5 tells me). If you have a job on the outside in the bag that makes an obscene amount more than you do in the military, AND it's pretty stable then yeah I'd say go for it and give up all the benefits, because it may end up breaking even in the end or doing a bit better, but for 99% of people the enlisted military is one of the best kept secrets in the entire world.

Have there been any studies, as to how this will affect retention? Will this make a military career less attractive?

    Hey Nicky first time listener. First thanks for your service. I have a couple of questions I need answered. First I know your rate is corpsman but did you go into a specific field such special operations, or pharmacist. Second congrats on your degree. Second question I have is after you do your 20+ years are you going to do a civilian job related to your navy job. And third what degree did you get and is it related to your navy job? O can you do a video on Damage Controlmen (DC)? Thanks.

    When you stay in for 20 years, you're going to eventually become the boss that many of the young enlisted people are going to hate...it's the circle of military life. But your reasoning for staying in are sound...just start racking up as much of that TSP money as you can and your retirement in your early 40s will be golden.

    • @NICKYMGTV
      @NICKYMGTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      already my plan! I think im a pretty good people person to limit the hate but I realize you'll pretty much always hate your boss.

    • @boatsie
      @boatsie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NICKY MGTV Being a people person helps, but when you need to enforce regulations that young enlisteds' believe are 'dumb, ridiculous or outdated;' or become the buffer between upper-level management & your troops, it is quite a challenge. You will, however, gain some respect for what some of your supervisors went through once you walk a mile in their combat boots.

      Take It slowly buddy...
      It Sounds fun, but you should always make sure you REALLY want to stay. Don't commit your life like that until you've at least gotten a taste...
      5 of the 4 year contracts should work for you. That way you always have that choice every 4 years, if you still want to do it...

    I got a question. I'm in the navy too, ET3, san diego. I've thought about staying in for 20 but I'm scared it's going to ruin my relationship with my girlfriend and if I have kids, I fear for being away from them. How do you plan on dealing with being away from you're family on/off again for the next 11 years?

    • @NICKYMGTV
      @NICKYMGTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brandon Buffa honestly it's all about sacrifice. Something you and your girlfriend will have to kind of agree on too. It's for the greater good it's part of the package of what you bring to the table. Reality is if you get out what are the chances you won't have to work those extended hours to make the cut for all the bills etc. many of my friends found themselves working the same about while getting out to keep up so that's something to consider as well.

    I know you posted this 2 yrs. ago, but I knew 5 mins. after swearing in that the Navy was not a great career choice for me. Every day for the next 4 yrs. I hated it. A month before my discharge my Div. officer had a ship over chat.with me. I could not believe it. I told him you wouldn't be sh*tin' me? I could not get away fast enough. Never regretted my decision.

    You neglect to tell us [ assuming it's not an issue ] what school you're currently attending. From a former HM a word of advice. Don't change who you are as a person in order to attain that E-7 level. It's a rite of passage and all that, and as I'm sure you know it comes with a lot of pressure to conform to the " program ". I've worked with a number of HMCs and many were total dicks, mostly because they had been shit on by those who came before them and now they wanted their turn.
    Congrats on your decision, best of luck in the future.
