As a former passenger aboard SS America, I can say she truly was the Queen of the American Merchant Marine. The SS United States , her running mate may have been larger and faster, but had none of America's style and warmth, none of her typical American grace and hominess that built her a cadre of thousands of repeat passengers. She really was one of a kind with charm all of her own.
It’s kinda eerie how everything like the stern except for the bow disintegrated while the front remained intact for the longest time. Kinda like a skull being the last of a human to decompose
My Grandfather worked on the America back in 1959 and actually met my Grandmother on a trip when she was on vacation with her family in 1961. They always had wonderful things to say about the ship and kept a lot of pictures of it that I remember looking through growing up. I remember they were heartbroken when they heard it ran aground
Cool! My father met my mother on a boat that he was the Captain of and they were married for 35 years until his passing, unfortunately that way of beginning a relationship is not allowed to happen anymore, as most cruise don’t allow relations between crew and passengers.

I have some of the decking and internal fittings from the America, recovered them when she was beached on Fuerteventura.
More dignified than being ripped apart in a breaking yard.
I sailed from Sydney to Southampton aboard the SS Australis, back in 1968. So many happy memories.
I sailed on her too in 1975 Melbourne to Southhampton, Beautiful Ship !
Still a proud Ole lady. She must know the glory of her past, and we thank her for her service.
This ship took me and my family to Australia from N.Ireland in 1974, so sad to see her end up this way.
I was born on the SS America enroute from Ireland to New York
For real?
My Uncle served on her as one of the radiomen, when she was the USS West Point.
Isso prova que nada é para sempre. Um navio com uma linda e grande história e que vai se decompondo em seu jazigo. É o ciclo sendo concluído.
I sailed from Auckland to Southampton on this lady in 1972 or 1973 as an 11 year old. What an amazing voyage. So sorry she ended this way.
I sailed to the States on this great ship from Southampton on 27 March 1957.

Great research. Well put together especially considering time elapsed. 👏
It is heartbreaking that a vessel of such majesty should be left to die like this. So sad.
well hey aleast she got away from the scrap yard
matches perfectly with the song used
I never seen a good ship like that back in her hay day she was a queen
No the big u was
She is dying , the pride of American, on the beech! Gone but not forgotten!
She's better sunk into the sea than scrapped
well she ran aground in a beach on a huge island witch she was gonna be scrapped but the company announced that she would become a hotel ship
На данный момент, он уже полностью под водой
THE SONG IS CALLED SLEEPING SUN
Actually, the piece of music is a hymn called Eternal Father Strong To Save.
@Christopher Steve In what way was it atrocious? Two women with beautiful voices instead of auto tuned shit thats prominent in todays music!
richard blackcloud awesome tune, crack a beer and watch the vid. Calming.
Thank you for the Navy Hymn.

I was there in 1989 when she was still together and it was beautiful as fuck
Bel video immagini e sfondo musicale. Davvero toccante. Questa nave l ho vista 15 anni fa sulla costa a fuerteventura.
We sailed from Southampton to a new life in Australia in 73 on Australis. Sad to see there's nothing left of her now...
yeah as of 2019 theres nothing left of the ship
@@hevendor958 Sad, isn't it...

wow
BELO VÍDEO,UMA INTRODUÇÃO MUITO BOA E UMA CANÇÃO LINDA
She wasn't "United States" sister, they never had sisters.. I remember her as "Australis" in Piraeus.... Beautiful ships of that era...
Anybody know what happened to the aft section? Did it blow out and sink? Or did it just disintegrate faster than the forward section?
I think it was scrapped (could be wrong)
@@ussindianapolis9137 you are probably right because I'm thinking no way it blew out to sea or disintegrated that much faster than the front.
@@MrSubmariner13 tho in reality, anything could happen so who knows lol
the stern was destroyed by the harsh waves completely
@green fox ok that makes sense. Thanks for the answer.
Well and truly done...
Imagine if she was sitting next to SS United States
I didn't know america star older than ss united states also i didn't know it was use in ww2
Think it was launched in 1939 and United States of America entered ww2 in 1941 so
Amen
Amazing you can see where the torpedo hit.
no it wasn't really torpedoed that part of it collapsed due to harsh waves hitting the ship
green fox pirates of the deep
Nate Olson got ja,you fell for it,fool.
What's the name of the song used in this?
Nightwish - Sleeping sun
Thanks.
It’s not bad it’s just sad
well now the song is being overused
or Long long journey by eyna
Her final or his final? A ship is male or female?
It would be nice if they narrated. What happened to the ship instead of the awful background music?
one with the sea
What Happened???
It was actually a pretty creepy video. Haha
Ou legal gostei
Adorei
I wanna play on it
well today the ship is completely gone after being destroyed by the harsh waves
Noelle L buzz kill 😭
@@mikecorleone6797
Wouldnt have been wise anyway. Imagine all the mold on that thing from sitting outside in the sea for years.
finsfan90 mold wouldn’t grow on the ship in that rusty salt water environment.. salt kills mold

the music is absolutely horrendous !!!
Crappy music
Thirdgen83 How the fuck is Nightwish crappy? The guy just used the older version of the song which wasn’t that good.
Thirdgen83 the music is not creepy it’s just that it’s sad
This is a Cunard ship... right?
Earth Chan this i do not think it’s a Cunard ship
Says 'American Lines' on the side toward the start. It was bought by others later, but never Cunard i dont think.
@@finsfan90 oh ok, thanks :D
It’s an American Line ship.
Her sister the SS United States is up in Philadelphia gradually rotting away.
