Of course zero mention of Dejan Bodiroga doing the move (called "The Whip") in the early '90s. Yugoslav players were doing similar moves throughout the late 80s. It's not about "who did it first", but it's crazy that at pretty much the same time great players where doing similar things without even knowing of each other's existence.

@@mcm0923 Height is not much of a hindrance to master this move. Great hand-eye coordination is a must. Height is a requirement predominantly if you want to play at the highest level of the sport... the NBA.
You don't have to be amazing at basketball to have fun with it, everyone has to start somewhere. The more you play, the better you'll get, so if you want to have fun with basketball, the best thing to do would just to go out and play. (Of course, that's a bit easier said than done rn with the virus keeping everyone indoors)
Tim Hardaway's crossover is the best, but i always have a feeling that his version is more demanding to the knee joints because it combines explosion and lateral change of direction . It takes a lot of torque to pull of that one-two dribbles, faking to go one direction and the abruptly stop and plant your first step and regenerate momentum to go to the other direction. I wonder if this caused knee injuries to Tim, Wade, and Kemba Walker as they do crossover the same way.
I lived in San Francisco during the runTMC era. I remember going to see a summer league game in Kezar stadium where Jason Kidd, a freshman at Cal, was going against Hardaway. The gym was packed since Kidd was a bay area HS legend, and making his name as one of the best players in college and a great defender. Hardaway did the star thing where he comes into the gym 5 minutes after the game started and goes right into the game. It was no contest. Hardaway got to the basket at will, blowing by anyone who tried to guard him, including Kidd. Must have scored 40 points without breaking a sweat. He left the building with a few minutes remaining in the game to a wildly cheering crowd. He was still good after he came back from the knee injury, but before that, he was unstoppable.
AI and Kobe started the exaggerating *carry-over* crossover where your hand is almost completely under the ball. Tim and Zeke kept it nice and tight and didn't resort to slight of hand.

He wanted his 40mins and 30pts per game win or lose. Kobe is the most overrated player ever. He's 10th or 11th but people think he's 2nd or Co-1st with MJ. The one move Kobe didn't steal from Mike which he should have was Mike's right to left crossover he got Russell on. No exaggerating carry, just great feet work and MJ was a much better shooter than Kobe or AI. 2pt% was 51% for his career.

I want to thank Hardaway! I spent hours practicing the move and was able to serve some people up with it on the local courts. Truth is you can blow by someone with the first part (tween the legs). If they try to stop that you cross em. (like in this video) If they try to stop the cross you go back to between the legs. Both moves feed off each other/set you up for the other one. That's why it's so devastating, If the defender tries to shut 1 move down it opens up the other move, etc, etc. Hats off to Hardaway and ankles off to the defenders! l

Adding onto this, the difference between a loose dribble and a tight dribble. CP3, Isiah T, Tim Hardaway, Steve Nash, Bob Cousey, Tony Parker some of the best ball handlers who predominantly have a tight handle or in the box as you say. Then guys like AI, Kyrie, Jamal Crawford, Curry, Kemba etc who predominantly have a loose handle that is more in line with the modern aestheticness of the game.

Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving would have killed it back then!" Maybe, but what my ignorant friends refuse to believe is that Cousy and Robertson were literally NOT allowed to dribble like Steph or Kyrie. They would have been called for palming, which would have resulted in a turnover. *On an unrelated note, it was kinda cool to see a young Coach Pop on the left at 6:45 !)

However, when the rules for ballhandling became more relaxed, as suggested in the video, the modern conception of a crossover started to appear (spontaneously and simultaneously, by many practitioners). Generally speaking, a basic crossover is a quick left-to-right or right-to-left movement, meant to allow the ballhandler to create some space for a jumper, or drive past him. In the 80s, crossovers were a common highlight. Hardaway's contribution, as a crossover innovator, was to do it THE BEST, despite using a movement (i.e. the between the leg dribble) that momentarily slows down the ballhandler. He used a unique posture, went between the legs, faked brilliantly, and still managed to maintain blazing speed. When I was a kid, we all practiced the method: - make a single, normal dribble with the right hand - instead of doing a second normal dribble, immediately get into "killer crossover posture" and quickly dribble the ball, between your legs, from right to left - if the defender bought that movement, thinking it was the intended crossover, then you can now take the final step and complete the true intent of your maneuver... - cross the ball in front of you, from left to right and blow by the defender
Iverson's was a carry, but the problem was officiating. I remember a few times he got caught at the Olympics. NBA refs let him get away with it like how they allow Harden to travel all game today because it slows the game down if you call every carry, palm, or "gather step".
Iverson stopped using his crossover because of officiating, from the '99 lockout season he used more stepbacks, pull-ups or just blow-by the defender. If you notice that,AI OG crossover stayed in the '90s, his quickness and ball handling were were enough to survive in the League.
One lesser known reason why it's called the killer crossover: it kills your own knees and ankles as well!. My knee issues in basketball mostly stem from me repeating this move everyday for years. It's so effective and fun to do but it will shorten your career

This video highlighed how Curry is underrated for me, due to the only focus on him being his shooting. When clearly, his dribbling is what allows for him to get the necessary space to get the shot off in the first place.

The thing about that Hardaway cross was if you figured out how to get it off going full speed, you can't be stopped. The fact that he was getting it off on Mugsy let's you know how serious it is.
If you ask me, Iverson was always making violation in his crossover. He was always carriing the ball for too long and in one moment he also grabs the ball with his palm, while in Tim's crossover, ball was always sliding down the palm and he did everything correct. Another good thing is that Tim could make his move on the smaller place on the floof while Iverson had to call for an isolation play as he needed an extra space for his crossover.

Growing up with a Vietnamese born father, watching basketball with him. He got the basketball move named, "Fadeaway" mixed up with Tim's last name, Hardaway. So when ever he sees a fadeaway shot on TV, he yells, "HARDAWAY!" LMAO!

As movement fakes, quick changes in direction, and dribbling behind the back and between the legs have always been a part of basketball, the "crossover" (and its prototypical ancestors) has always existed. However, when the rules for ballhandling became more relaxed, as suggested in the video, the modern conception of a crossover started to appear (spontaneously and simultaneously, by many practitioners).
Generally speaking, a basic crossover is a quick left-to-right or right-to-left movement, meant to allow the ballhandler to create some space for a jumper, or drive past him. In the 80s, crossovers were a common highlight.
Hardaway's contribution, as a crossover innovator, was to do it THE BEST, despite using a movement (i.e. the between the leg dribble) that momentarily slows down the ballhandler. He used a unique posture, went between the legs, faked brilliantly, and still managed to maintain blazing speed. When I was a kid, we all practiced the method:
- make a single, normal dribble with the right hand
- instead of doing a second normal dribble, immediately get into "killer crossover posture" and quickly dribble the ball, between your legs, from right to left
- if the defender bought that movement, thinking it was the intended crossover, then you can now take the final step and complete the true intent of your maneuver...
- cross the ball in front of you, from left to right and blow by the defender
Iverson's was a carry, but the problem was officiating. I remember a few times he got caught at the Olympics. NBA refs let him get away with it like how they allow Harden to travel all game today because it slows the game down if you call every carry, palm, or "gather step".
Iverson stopped using his crossover because of officiating, from the '99 lockout season he used more stepbacks, pull-ups or just blow-by the defender. If you notice that,AI OG crossover stayed in the '90s, his quickness and ball handling were were enough to survive in the League.

One lesser known reason why it's called the killer crossover: it kills your own knees and ankles as well!. My knee issues in basketball mostly stem from me repeating this move everyday for years. It's so effective and fun to do but it will shorten your career

The thing about that Hardaway cross was if you figured out how to get it off going full speed, you can't be stopped. The fact that he was getting it off on Mugsy let's you know how serious it is.

If you ask me, Iverson was always making violation in his crossover. He was always carriing the ball for too long and in one moment he also grabs the ball with his palm, while in Tim's crossover, ball was always sliding down the palm and he did everything correct. Another good thing is that Tim could make his move on the smaller place on the floof while Iverson had to call for an isolation play as he needed an extra space for his crossover.
Plus Hardaway kept his head low, so if you try to steal it you'd bump his head or have to watch for it.
