Saw George Gervin 3 times live in San Antonio the 82-83 season. He was an amazing player. Hugely underrated because he didn't play in New York, Los Angeles, or Boston.
Yeah, he's pretty good. But do you know who else is pretty good? Producer, writer and presenter of the show Pretty Good, Jon Bois. Seriously though, Jon Bois is the TH-cam God.
I grew up in Philadelphia in the 70's. Going to the Spectrum to watch the "Iceman" play is the definitive experience that ensured my love of basketball. Regardless of how unstoppable he could be, he just..played. No trash talk, he just ..played. When he was on..didn't matter who tried to guard him. Even now, awe inspiring to watch old tape of him doing his thing on otherwise forgetable Spurs teams in that era.
As someone who watched Ice during his heydey, as good as compilations like this are, you TRULY can’t appreciate how good he actually was! He could, and DID, score in so many different ways. He wasn’t a shooter, he was a pure scorer, and looked like he was never even trying. It’s a shame his Spurs teams never won it all. They were sublime.
Vachan I miss creative nicknames like “Magic”, The Iceman, The Doctor, Pistol, Muggsy etc. Nowadays it seems like every other guys nickname is just their initials.

Some moves just validate the joy of the game- You are a awesome writer and that Kobe videos was absolute masterpiece....No one articulates the culture of Basketball better than you
The finger roll does give the offensive player an advantage in that it can be floated above a taller defender trying to block your shot AND because of the backspin from the "flick" off the finger tips, it's a very soft shot that can roll around around the rim and go in. That finger roll was so nice for Ice that defenders had to pay the price.💪
In my days of playing youth basketball, I loved using this as a finish, especially with a hand switch. I'd watch players like Rod Strickland, Stephon Marbury and Allen Iverson show off their dexterity mid-air, and try to emulate it before and after practices. It definitely was a shot to me that said "I'm too smooth for you". Once I learned who George Gervin was, he immediately became of my favorite players of his time. He demonstrated such personality in his game.
George Gervin's finger roll was the final unstoppable move by a gifted offensive player. Double-teams and weak-side helpers were often thwarted by his deft movement of the ball. The floater is the small guys go-to now. It mimics Ice's space creating move with almost similar results in the paint.
Sick video. New to the channel . Huge hoops fam but wasn't a witness to this era of ball so it was nice to get a hoops history lesson. Everybody has finger rolled once
Fantastic video. It’s amazing how satisfying the finger roll is - it’s just cool. Also, how much have athletes changed in basketball lol? They were like a team of elongated skeletons 😂😂
In the truest sense of the term dunks aren't "cool". Cool has to be effortless, laid back, even a little detached. Dunks are too agro for that. The finger-roll takes a lot of practice while looking like something you're doing without too much effort.
A history of famous moves would be good content. I would love to see something on kareems sky hook shot. It’s another move lost through the generations.
Thank you, you explained it perfectly. Young people today don't see how today's players are playing on the shoulder of the past. Today's players have skills but yesterday's players invented the moves!
The Iceman didn't invent the finger roll, he just perfected it. Manu didn't invent the euro step, he just perfected it. Manu didn't invent the flop, he just perfected it. :)
Defenders have no chance. George is 6'7" and with long arm and a jump he rolls the ball into the basket with ease before even the defenders able to jump. Only Iceman can do it artistically.

jadenxkoren I was gonna comment that too. The way Kyle talks and his script writing is so unmatched
That was a beautiful line indeed.

George Gervin's finger roll. Two words. Silky smooth.

Paul Whitehead he’s like Nerdwriter but for hoops

Ice / Iceman top tier nickname in basketball history
Black Mamba for Kobe as well..
Up there with The Doctor or Dr

Nicely done.
Maybe a similar video on Kareem's skyhook and why no one uses it. Love the videos as always.
@Tong Zou it didn't when I made the comment Tong.
Iceman's finger roll was killer, sooo smooth. I also like the Dr's finger roll.
this dude never misses, love his videos
One word to describe the Gervin finger roll
"SMOOTH"
Some moves just validate the joy of the game- You are a awesome writer and that Kobe videos was absolute masterpiece....No one articulates the culture of Basketball better than you
Hope Kyle j Mann gets a Nobel prize for keeping the masses entertained during these trying times
The finger roll is to George Gervin as the Moonwalk is to Michael Jackson
"Let me know if you agree."
The day I disagree with you will be a dark day indeed, J. Kyle Mann
Virtuosic theremin player in traffic . . . that was wonderful

This was so well done. Love for Ice and the roll. Thank you!
Hearing your voice fills me with this weird calm.
I am so excited for this series to continue.
Another gem by the Mann
Nobody done it like the iceman smooth that poster is legendary.. until this day
Thats that jelly finisher!! The ROOOOOWWW-L.
No
Kyle, this is just brilliant... took me way back
The intro of Winning Time shows a beautiful finger roll by (the TV series) Dr. J. Awesome move for sure.
Nice! Well said...accurate...respectful....had that poster on my wall...Ice was a favorite!
Gotta love that east coast beat playing throughout the video
WOW, I did not expect to see a casual relation of the finger roll to speedrunning tech in Mario kart.
Nice one
My favorite player to watch. So smooth.
Ringer, this is the content I like to see. I’ve plowed through em all though! We need more!!!

wow, this was really well written!
Carter's utter fail @ 6:45 is the best thing I've seen all week. Thank you.
Steph Curry should make him proud. His high underhand flip shots over bigs are next level finger roll floaters
💯 one of today’s greatest ambassadors of “touch”
He's an expert. He knows he doesn't get calls so he gets his points anyways.
Gervin❄️❄️
Just know that you’re the best at what you do
Man that intro is dope!!
If this series keeps going, please please please do a video on the Shammgod
Fantastic video. It’s amazing how satisfying the finger roll is - it’s just cool. Also, how much have athletes changed in basketball lol?
They were like a team of elongated skeletons 😂😂
Steph is definitely the guy that finger rolls the most nowadays, he even does it in his pre game warm up
This just shows you how great NBA Street Vol. 2 was. They had Connie Hawkins as an unlockable player.
Fantastic
Much Gratitude
Ps The Iceman played on the same team with Dr J in his first season and Jordan in his last season.
some career arc huh? LOL
Having big hands is a benefit, but being inventive is the best part.

the mario kart analogy was so unexpected but strangely fitting.
A smoothly executed finger roll is sometimes more exciting than a dunk depending on the context.

Love this, but why they do Vince like that haha

what's the music around the 40 second mark?

Our coaches made us run if we tried to finger roll instead of normal layups and jump shots. Haha
what is a tuxedo player?
